Successful Weight Loss in Women Participating in The West Virginia WISEWOMAN Study: A Mixed Methods Approach
Objectives. This mixed-methods study was designed to examine sociodemographic, health-related lifestyle, quality of life, and social support factors associated with weight loss in women, and to describe the high points, low points and turning points in the stories of women who lost at least 5% of their baseline weight in the West Virginia WISEWOMAN study.;Methods. Using chi square tests and t-tests, data from the West Virginia WISEWOMAN study were used to compare the 67 women who successfully lost at least 5% of their baseline weight to the 334 women who stayed within 5% of their baseline weight. For the qualitative portion of the study, the story path method of collecting stories was used to gather the stories of women who were successful at weight loss. The high points, low points and turning points in their stories of losing weight were analyzed.;Results. The only significant finding in the quantitative portion of the study was in social support: women who lost weight had fewer friends and family they felt comfortable talking to than women whose weight stayed the same (X2 = 18.85; p = .001). For the qualitative portion of the study, 14 common elements were extrapolated from the high points, low points and turning points which described women\u27s experiences with weight loss. Changes in well-being and view of self were found in the high points; low energy, challenging life circumstances, and variations in weight and eating patterns were revealed as low points; and turning points were described as meaningful moments when actions were taken to follow through with food choices and activity.;Conclusions. Nurses can assist clients with identifying and obtaining effective support, and help them overcome the low points of weight loss in order to follow through with long-term health behavior changes
Characterization of surficial units on Mars using Viking orbiter multispectral image and thermal data
Albedo and thermal property correlations of the topography of Mars were conducted with emphases upon the types and origins of materials exposed in the central equatorial region. This area displays a wide variation in color, albedo and thermal properties, and is relatively free of dust and haze. The physical, mineralogical and elemental characteristics of this area are discussed
The extent to which autistic traits are predictive of impairments in allocentric spatial navigation
This research is centred around how individuals with autistic traits navigate using both allocentric and egocentric spatial reference frames. Previous research suggests differences in the way that those with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) navigate with much research indicating that those with ASD struggle particularly with allocentric navigation. In this study, 256 participants completed a place learning task followed by two self-report questionnaires, the Navigation Inventory and the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ). Results showed that AQ scores correlated with better performance in the allocentric condition of the place learning task, this was in the opposite direction than predicted. Further to this, the attention to detail subscale of the AQ was the only subscale to show a significant correlation with allocentric place learning error. Within the egocentric conditions people performed better in the condition without unreliable landmarks. Although this finding differs from that of previous research it aligns with findings from other virtual place learning tasks in which participants with ASD excel at visuo-spatial tasks during virtual experiments. This research is important because a greater awareness is needed to highlight the difficulties that a person with ASD may experience in their everyday life, this can allow for the development of specific navigational strategies to aid their daily navigation
Untangling The Carried Interest Controversy
Carried interest is a form of deferred compensation payable to managers of hedge funds organized as investment partnerships. There are two tax components of this compensation that are favorable to the manager. First, income taxes are due only when amounts are received rather than when this interest is granted, and second, this income is eligible for the lower tax rates of capital gains and dividends. Special tax treatment has been criticized by some as being an unfair benefit for income that is essentially compensation for services, while proponents of continuing this special treatment point out policy reasons for continuing it, emphasizing characteristics of carried interest that warrant treatment such special treatment. Legislative changes have been proposed but not enacted into law, and there are different alternatives that warrant consideration for the future
A Collaborative, Trilateral Approach to Bridging the Information Literacy Gap in Student Writing
As localized assessments confirm national findings that undergraduates struggle to integrate resources into research-based compositions effectively, data at one comprehensive public university indicate library sessions improve students’ ability to locate and evaluate information, but students continue to struggle with the “use” component of information literacy. This article presents a trilateral case study among librarians, faculty, and writing center administrators, emphasizing the intersection of programmatic partnerships, assessment, and pedagogical best practices. Our research shows a trilateral approach to information literacy increases efficacy and a sense of shared responsibility in support of student research where traditional bilateral approaches fall short
Perception and the Likelihood to Practice Medication Reconciliation Among Community Pharmacists
The objective of this study was to gain insight into the perception and the likelihood to practice medication reconciliation among pharmacists working at the apotek. Two guiding questions were given to each participant and participants were asked to write the answer on the paper. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. There were 31 pharmacists involved in this study. All of participants perceived that medication reconciliation was important to be implemented. Almost all of participants (i.e 30 from 31 pharmacists) clearly stated that they would like to implement medication reconciliation. And, there were 3 themes found as the main motivation factors in implementing the medication reconciliation. Pharmacists who were working at the apotek had a good perception about medication reconciliation and also showed the likelihood to implement medication reconciliation. Further research need to be conducted in order to explore the barriers in implementing medication reconciliation
Planting Green: Potential Benefits and Disadvantages of Planting Corn into Live Cereal Rye Cover Crop
Although cover crops are typically terminated 2–4 weeks prior to cash crop planting, there may be situations where late-burndown or planting into a living cover crop (planting green) may be necessary or even beneficial. This experiment investigated the effect of cover crop termination date on corn (Zea mays) yield and the presence of beneficial insects. Three different termination dates were tested: 4 weeks prior to planting (brown), 7 to 14 days prior to planting (green-brown), and at planting (green), as well as a check treatment with no cover crop planted. The site year by termination date interaction was significant for cover crop biomass and thus each year was analyzed separately. Preliminary results of sentinel prey assessments indicate no significant difference in the presence of beneficial insects in the systems. However, there was a significant yield decrease in treatments where corn was planted into a green cover crop in both 2021 and 2022. Cover crop yields in 2022 were 50% lower than those observed in 2021. The control and planting brown treatments resulted in significantly higher yields than the planting green-brown and green treatments in 2022
The Status of Ethics in Technology Education
Ethics is not a new concept within technology education. The inclusion of ethics evolved naturally from the progression of technological activity in the latter part of the twentieth century. During this shift to a postindustrial society, people started to look at technology from a more humanistic view than they previously had. To keep pace with these changes, a new ethic was suggested to help advance technological literacy by highlighting the relationship between humans, the environment, and technology (DeVore, 1980, 1991).
How far have we come? This chapter reviews the current state of ethics within technology education. In the first two sections, materials for classroom instruction, including textbooks and modular materials, are examined. The third section discusses and recommends resources and practices that appear in professional literature. A survey of international technology education and ethics constitutes the fourth section. The chapter concludes with a look at professional ethics as they relate to technology teachers, teacher educators, and administrators
