    AdS Black Holes with a Bouncing Interior

    We construct planar black hole solutions of AdS gravity minimally coupled to a scalar field with an even, super-exponential potential. We show that the evolution of the black hole interior exhibits an infinite sequence of Kasner epochs, as the scalar field rolls back and forth in its potential. We obtain an analytic expression for the `bounces' between each Kasner epoch and also give an explicit formula for the times and strengths of the bounces at late interior times, thereby fully characterizing the interior evolution. In this way we show that the interior geometry approaches the Schwarzschild singularity at late times, even as the scalar field is driven higher up its potential with each bounce.Comment: 18 pages. 6 figures. v2: References adde

    Self-assembled deoxyguanosine based molecular electronic device on GaN substrates

    Nanoscale hybrid molecular organic photodetectors based on self-assembled guanosine molecules conjugated to wide-bandgap GaNsemiconductors has been realized in the ultraviolet wavelength regime. Metal-semiconductor-metal based photodetector is fabricated using ordering of modified guanosine based semiconductor nanowires which exhibit I-Vcharacteristics with high current response and higher rectification ratio compared to Si based hybrid photodetectors. Photocurrent response of a two-terminal device shows the typical characteristics of a semiconductorphotodiode with a cutoff wavelength at ∼325nm.     Scheduling for Urban Air Mobility using Safe Learning

    This work considers the scheduling problem for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) vehicles travelling between origin-destination pairs with both hard and soft trip deadlines. Each route is described by a discrete probability distribution over trip completion times (or delay) and over inter-arrival times of requests (or demand) for the route along with a fixed hard or soft deadline. Soft deadlines carry a cost that is incurred when the deadline is missed. An online, safe scheduler is developed that ensures that hard deadlines are never missed, and that average cost of missing soft deadlines is minimized. The system is modelled as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) and safe model-based learning is used to find the probabilistic distributions over route delays and demand. Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) Earliest Deadline First (EDF) is used to safely explore the learned models in an online fashion and develop a near-optimal non-preemptive scheduling policy.     Surface plasmon enhanced UV emission in AlGaN/GaN quantum well

    The surface plasmon (SP) energy for resonant enhancement of light has shown to be modified by the epitaxial substrate and the overlying metalthin film. The modification of SP energy in AlGaN/GaN epitaxial layers is studied using spectroscopic ellipsometry for enhanced UV-light emission. Silver induced SP can be extended to the UV wavelength range by increasing the aluminum concentration in AlxGa1−xN epilayer. A threefold increase in the UV-light emission is observed from AlGaN/GaN quantum well due to silver induced SP. Photoluminescence lifetime measurements confirm the resonant plasmon induced increase in Purcell factor as observed from the PL intensity measurements

    Non-Newtonian thin films with normal stresses: dynamics and spreading

    The dynamics of thin films on a horizontal solid substrate is investigated in the case of non-Newtonian fluids exhibiting normal stress differences, the rheology of which is strongly non-linear. Two coupled equations of evolution for the thickness of the film and the shear rate are proposed within the lubrication approximation. This framework is applied to the motion of an advancing contact line. The apparent dynamic contact angle is found to depend logarithmically on a lengthscale determined solely by the rheological properties of the fluid and the velocity of the contact line

    Near-field optical spectroscopy and microscopy of self-assembled GaN∕AlN nanostructures

    The spatial distribution and emission properties of small clusters of GaNquantum dots in an AlN matrix are studied using high-resolution electron and optical microscopy. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveals near vertical correlation among the GaNdots due to a sufficiently thin AlN spacer layer thickness, which allows strain induced stacking. Scanning electron and atomic force microscopy show lateral coupling due to a surface roughness of ∼50–60nm. Near-field photoluminescence in the illumination mode (both spatially and spectrally resolved) at 10K revealed emission from individual dots, which exhibits size distribution of GaNdots from localized sites in the stacked nanostructure. Strong spatial localization of the excitons is observed in GaNquantum dots formed at the tip of self-assembled hexagonal pyramid shapes with six [101¯1¯] facets

    Prospective randomised comparison of femoral transfix versus endobutton with constant tibial fixation in hamstring tendon ACL reconstruction: a preliminary study

    Background: The purpose of this study is to evaluate clinico radiological outcome of hamstring tendon ACL reconstruction using femoral Transfixation and Endobutton with identical Tibial fixation.Methods: A Prospective randomized clinical outcome study was done from January 2002 to June 2008, a total of 132 patients with quadruple hamstring ACL reconstruction using a femoral fixation group A Endobutton (n=68; median age=27.4) and group B with Transfix (n=64; median age=26.1) and identical Tibial fixation with Biointerference screw and bone staple were studied. Patients in each group had a clinical and radiological assessment at <3, 3-12, 12-24 and >24 months after surgery.Results: The mean Lysholm Knee score has improved significantly with time within these groups but no difference on comparison between groups. Ninety percent of all patients had functionally normal or near normal International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) knee ligament ratings. IKDC Subjective Knee evaluation mean score has progressively increased significantly from pre op values of 37.58 and 36.55 to about 74.51 and 75.85 in group A and group B respectively. The tibial and femoral tunnels also showed widening of about 9.64% and 7.79% in group A as compared to 7.71% and 7.27% in group B at >24 months follow-up, which was statistically insignificant. MRI done in limited patients showed good graft incorporation in both groups.Conclusions: So keeping the tibial graft fixation constant, the two different femoral fixation methods, Endobutton and transfixation have not influenced in the clinical outcome in this short term preliminary study. But long term follow up of these is necessary to evaluate the significance of tunnel widening and its final outcome
