    Doped carrier formulation of the t-J model: the projection constraint and the effective Kondo-Heisenberg lattice representation

    We show that the recently proposed doped carrier Hamiltonian formulation of the t-J model should be complemented with the constraint that projects out the unphysical states. With this new important ingredient, the previously used and seemingly different spin-fermion representations of the t-J model are shown to be gauge related to each other. This new constraint can be treated in a controlled way close to half-filling suggesting that the doped carrier representation provides an appropriate theoretical framework to address the t-J model in this region. This constraint also suggests that the t-J model can be mapped onto a Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model. Such a mapping highlights important physical similarities between the quasi two-dimensional heavy fermions and the high-Tc_c superconductors. Finally we discuss the physical implications of our model representation relating in particular the small versus large Fermi surface crossover to the closure of the lattice spin gap.Comment: corrected and enlarged versio

    Supersymmetric Jaynes-Cummings model and its exact solutions

    The super-algebraic structure of a generalized version of the Jaynes-Cummings model is investigated. We find that a Z2 graded extension of the so(2,1) Lie algebra is the underlying symmetry of this model. It is isomorphic to the four-dimensional super-algebra u(1/1) with two odd and two even elements. Differential matrix operators are taken as realization of the elements of the superalgebra to which the model Hamiltonian belongs.     Transverse Optical Mode Patterns for an RF Excited Ar-He-Xe Laser

    Transverse optical modes for an RF excited Ar-He-Xe laser are studied both experimentally and theoretically. A diffraction model for a waveguide with a nonsaturable gain and refractive index gradients placed between two plane mirrors is formulated. The effects of gain and diffraction index gradients and of diffraction in free space are evaluated for typical experimental conditions. A direct comparison between theoretical mode patterns and experimentally measured ones at distances of 17 and 114 cm from the output mirror demonstrated a satisfactory agreement for various laser wavelengths and gas mixture composition

    Inhibition of transketolase by p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate

    AbstractThe effect of p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate, a natural analogue of transketolase substrate, on the catalytic activity of the enzyme was investigated. p-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate proved to be a reversible and competitive inhibitor of transketolase with respect to substrate; it was also able to displace thiamine diphosphate from holotransketolase. The data suggest that p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate participates in the regulation of tyrosine biosynthesis by influencing the catalytic activity of transketolase

    Termination Reaction in the Anionic Polymerization of Methacrylonitrile

    The anionic polymerization of methacrylonitrile initiated by triethylphosphine in dimethylformamide was studied. Experimental evidence for two mechanisms of termination reaction was obtained. By addition of water or alcohol in polymerizing system the rate of polymerization and molecular weight of polymethacrylon1itrile decrease, which proves the termination reaction to be bimolecular and proceed by interaction of the active carbanion with water or alcohol. The rate constant for termination of free anions with water was determined, k~,0 = 2.2 x 102 dm3 moP s-1• The termination reaction could not be excluded by purification and prolonged drying of all components of the system, which indicates that the second mechanism of termination is operative as well. Conductivity measurements gave evidence for a monomolecular spontaneous reaction leading to deactivation of the anion

    Influence of allelic polymorphism in the 3’ untranslated region of the <i>StTCP23</i> gene on the tolerance of potato cultivars to the potato spindle tuber viroid

    Background. It is known that the pathological phenotype of potato plants can be mediated by complementary interactions between the genomic RNA of PSTVd and mRNA of some regulatory genes, which consequently lead to RNA interference, the synthesis of small interfering RNAs (vd-sRNA PSTVd), and impaired morphogenesis. At the same time, symptoms caused by the viroid may vary in different potato cultivars. Here we predict the interactions between the 3’ UTRs of various alleles of the StTCP23 transcription factor gene and the complementary regions in PSTVd genomic RNA.Materials and methods. We selected eight commercial potato cultivars with different symptoms of viroid infection and disease. For each cultivar, six clones of each cDNA amplicon of StTCP23 with a 3’ UTR were identified, and the allelic compositions of the target regions within their 3’ UTRs were characterized.Results. In total, 11 types of alleles of the 3’ UTR StTCP23 segment complementary to the vd-sRNA PSTVd were identified. Cultivars with the A allele (‘Gala’, ‘Colomba’, ‘Favorit’, and ‘Fioletovy’) identical to the reference genome or a high dose of the C allele with a deletion of four nucleotides (cv. ‘Impala’) were characterized by high susceptibility already at the primary (firstyear) infection with the PSTVd. Cvs. ‘Krepysh’, ‘Labadia’ and ‘Riviera’, classified as tolerant during primary inoculation, on the contrary, were characterized by the absence of the A allele and the presence of cultivar-specific mutant alleles.Conclusion. A high degree of polymorphism in the target site (3’ UTR region) of StTCP23 indicates a possible selection pressure on this locus. It can be assumed that cultivars with shorter alleles, which have fewer bases complementary to vd-sRNA in hypothetical duplexes and therefore less likely to induce target gene silencing, are more tolerant to the PSTVd upon primary viroid infection
