    Two languages, two minds: flexible cognitive processing driven by language of operation.

    People make sense of objects and events around them by classifying them into identifiable categories. The extent to which language affects this process has been the focus of a long-standing debate: Do different languages cause their speakers to behave differently? Here, we show that fluent German-English bilinguals categorize motion events according to the grammatical constraints of the language in which they operate. First, as predicted from cross-linguistic differences in motion encoding, bilingual participants functioning in a German testing context prefer to match events on the basis of motion completion to a greater extent than do bilingual participants in an English context. Second, when bilingual participants experience verbal interference in English, their categorization behavior is congruent with that predicted for German; when bilingual participants experience verbal interference in German, their categorization becomes congruent with that predicted for English. These findings show that language effects on cognition are context-bound and transient, revealing unprecedented levels of malleability in human cognition

    A flexible format for exchanging pulsar data

    We describe a data format currently in use amongst European institutions for exchanging and archiving pulsar data. The format is designed to be as flexible as possible with regard to present and future compatibility with different operating systems. One application of the common format is simultaneous multi-frequency observations of single pulses. A data archive containing over 2500 pulse profiles stored in this format is now available via the Internet (see http://www.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/pulsar/data), together with a small suite of computer programs that can read, write and display the data

    Preliminary diagnostic reference levels for endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography in Greece

    The main objective of this study was to determine the preliminary Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRLs) in terms of Kerma Area Product (KAP) and fluoroscopy time (Tf) during Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatography (ERCP) procedures. Additionally, an investigation was conducted to explore the statistical relation between KAP and Tf. Data from a set of 200 randomly selected patients treated in 4 large hospitals in Greece (50 patients per hospital) were analyzed in order to obtain preliminary DRLs for KAP and Tf during therapeutic ERCP procedures. Non-parametric statistic tests were performed in order to determine a statistically significant relation between KAP and Tf. The resulting third quartiles for KAP and Tf for hospitals (A, B, C and D) were found as followed: KAPA = 10.7 Gy cm^2, TfA = 4.9 min; KAPB = 7.5 Gy cm^2, TfB = 5.0 min; KAPC = 19.0 Gy cm^2, TfC = 7.3 min; KAPD = 52.4 Gy cm^2, TfD = 15.8 min. The third quartiles, calculated for the total 200 cases sample, are: KAP = 18.8 Gy cm^2 and Tf = 8.2 min. For 3 out of 4 hospitals and for the total sample, p-values of statistical indices (correlation of KAP and Tf) are less than 0.001, while for the Hospital A p-values are ranging from 0.07 to 0.08. Using curve fitting, we finally determine that the relation of Tf and KAP is deriving from a power equation (KAP = Tf^1.282) with R^2 = 0.85. The suggested Preliminary DRLs (deriving from the third quartiles of the total sample) for Greece are: KAP = 19 Gy cm^2 and Tf = 8 min, while the relation between KAP and Tf is efficiently described by a power equatio

    New Supernova Constraints on Sterile Neutrino Production

    We consider the possibility that a light sterile-neutrino species νS\nu_S can be produced by νe\nu_e scattering during the cooling of a proto-neutron star. If we parameterize the sterile neutrino production cross-section by a parameter AA as σ(νeXνSX)=Aσ(νeXνeX)\sigma (\nu_e X\rightarrow \nu_S X) = A \sigma(\nu_e X\rightarrow \nu_e X), where XX is an electron, neutron or proton, we show that AA is constrained by limits to the conversion of νe\nu_e to νS\nu_S in the region between the sterile-neutrino trapping region and the electron-neutrino trapping region. This consideration excludes values of AA in the range between 10^{-4} \la A \la 10^{-1}.Comment: 12 pages; Late

    Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay from Singlet Neutrinos in Extra Dimensions

    We study the model-building conditions under which a sizeable 0νββ0\nu\beta\beta-decay signal to the recently reported level of~0.4 eV is due to Kaluza--Klein singlet neutrinos in theories with large extra dimensions. Our analysis is based on 5-dimensional singlet-neutrino models compactified on an S1/Z2S^1/Z_2 orbifold, where the Standard--Model fields are localized on a 3-brane. We show that a successful interpretation of a positive signal within the above minimal 5-dimensional framework would require a non-vanishing shift of the 3-brane from the orbifold fixed points by an amount smaller than the typical scale (100 MeV)1^{-1} characterizing the Fermi nuclear momentum. The resulting 5-dimensional models predict a sizeable effective Majorana-neutrino mass that could be several orders of magnitude larger than the light neutrino masses. Most interestingly, the brane-shifted models with only one bulk sterile neutrino also predict novel trigonometric textures leading to mass scenarios with hierarchical active neutrinos and large νμ\nu_\mu-ντ\nu_\tau and νe\nu_e-νμ\nu_\mu mixings that can fully explain the current atmospheric and solar neutrino data.Comment: 33 pages, LaTeX, minor rewordings, references adde

    Measurements of Charged Current Reactions of νe\nu_e on 12C^{12}C

    Charged Current reactions of νe\nu_e on 12C^{12}C have been studied using a μ+\mu^+ decay-at-rest νe\nu_e beam at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. The cross section for the exclusive reaction 12C(νe,e)12Ng.s.^{12}C(\nu_e,e^-)^{12}N_{g.s.} was measured to be (8.9±0.3±0.9)×1042(8.9\pm0.3\pm0.9)\times10^{-42} cm2^2. The observed energy dependence of the cross section and angular distribution of the outgoing electron agree well with theoretical expectations. Measurements are also presented for inclusive transitions to 12N^{12}N excited states, 12C(νe,e)12N^{12}C(\nu_e,e^-)^{12}N^* and compared with theoretical expectations. The measured cross section, (4.3±0.4±0.6)×1042(4.3\pm0.4\pm0.6)\times10^{-42} cm2^2, is somewhat lower than previous measurements and than a continuum random phase approximation calculation.     Co-creation of a virtual interactive teaching package for auditors of healthcare placements - towards assurance of quality of health care traineeships

    To provide medical and allied health professionals students with the best clinical learning environments, quality processes must be in place, and these require innovation to assure audit material resources that are fit for purpose, can work well within the situation and provide the correct teaching and learning to train auditors. HEALINT4ALL ERASMUS+ Strategic partnership provides medical education and allied health professionals with an audit system to facilitate quality assurance of EU clinical learning environments by mapping and innovatively adapting a newly established audit protocol and support tools to suit the Higher Education needs for wider application to medicine and professionals allied to medicine. The project conducted a literature scoping review followed by interviews and focus groups across all 6 European partners of clinicians, students and educators of service needs and best practice, resulting to map standards and requirements for clinical learning environments and develop a protocol to assess the quality of placements. Next, it developed a digital interactive platform for European and national placements appraisal following user-centred design to allow the collaboration between Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), and HEIs and placements. In order the application of the HEALINT4ALL protocol within the digital interactive tool to be beneficial, the auditors of the healthcare placements should have the necessary competences to perform the audits utilising the HEALINT4ALL a digital interactive platform. An online or blended learning approach is preferred to fit with the clinical academics' needs that will undertake the role of auditor. Thus, HEALINT4ALL co-created a Virtual Interactive Teaching Package for Training the Auditors of Healthcare Placements. It followed a modified ASPIRE framework to develop the package. The ASPIRE framework stands for Aims, Storyboarding, Population, Implementation, Release and Evaluation. This work describes the co-creation journey that engaged stakeholders in 6 different countries in order to co-design the resources, experts in the field that reviewed the content to ensure its high quality, the development that followed and the first pilot's evaluation from experts. While some efforts have been made towards the standardisation of auditing clinical placements, to the best of our knowledge this is the first attempt to develop a short curriculum to training the auditors of healthcare placements and implemented as a virtual interactive teaching package

    Qualitative behavior of solutions for thermodynamically consistent Stefan problems with surface tension

    The qualitative behavior of a thermodynamically consistent two-phase Stefan problem with surface tension and with or without kinetic undercooling is studied. It is shown that these problems generate local semiflows in well-defined state manifolds. If a solution does not exhibit singularities in a sense made precise below, it is proved that it exists globally in time and its orbit is relatively compact. In addition, stability and instability of equilibria is studied. In particular, it is shown that multiple spheres of the same radius are unstable, reminiscent of the onset of Ostwald ripening.Comment: 56 pages. Expanded introduction, added references.
