Laser driven self-assembly of shape-controlled potassium nanoparticles in porous glass
We observe growth of shape-controlled potassium nanoparticles inside a random
network of glass nanopores, exposed to low-power laser radiation. Visible laser
light plays a dual role: it increases the desorption probability of potassium
atoms from the inner glass walls and induces the self-assembly of metastable
metallic nanoparticles along the nanopores. By probing the sample transparency
and the atomic light-induced desorption flux into the vapour phase, the
dynamics of both cluster formation/evaporation and atomic photo-desorption
processes are characterized. Results indicate that laser light not only
increases the number of nanoparticles embedded in the glass matrix but also
influences their structural properties. By properly choosing the laser
frequency and the illumination time, we demonstrate that it is possible to
tailor the nanoparticles'shape distribution. Furthermore, a deep connection
between the macroscopic behaviour of atomic desorption and light-assisted
cluster formation is observed. Our results suggest new perspectives for the
study of atom/surface interaction as well as an effective tool for the
light-controlled reversible growth of nanostructures.Comment: 14 pages,6 figures, http://iopscience.iop.org/1612-202X/11/8/085902
A room-temperature alternating current susceptometer - Data analysis, calibration, and test
An AC susceptometer operating in the range of 10 Hz to 100 kHz and at room
temperature is designed, built, calibrated and used to characterize the
magnetic behaviour of coated magnetic nanoparticles. Other weakly magnetic
materials (in amounts of some millilitres) can be analyzed as well. The setup
makes use of a DAQ-based acquisition system in order to determine the amplitude
and the phase of the sample magnetization as a function of the frequency of the
driving magnetic field, which is powered by a digital waveform generator. A
specific acquisition strategy makes the response directly proportional to the
sample susceptibility, taking advantage of the differential nature of the coil
assembly. A calibration method based on conductive samples is developed.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, 19 ref
A new class of sum rules for products of Bessel functions
In this paper we derive a new class of sum rules for products of the Bessel
functions of first kind. Using standard algebraic manipulations we extend some
of the well known properties of . Some physical applications of the
results are also discussed. A comparison with the Newberger[J. Math. Phys.

Culture of microalgae using interstitial water extracted from shrimp pond bottom sediments
Interstitial water, extracted from the bottom sediment of a shrimp culture pond, was rich in nutrients containing total phosphorus with concentration of 25.98 mg/l and total nitrogen of 65.45 mg/l. A diatom, Chaetoceros calcitrans, a green alga, Nannochloropsis oculata, and a cyanobacterium, Oscillatoria sp., were cultured in pure interstitial water (PIW), diluted interstitial water (DIW) and in Conway medium (CM). C. calcitrans showed a significantly higher (P 0.05) in the growth rate of Oscillatoria sp. cultured in interstitial water and that with added silica or a combination of nitrogen, phosphorus and silica. This study indicates that interstitial water extracted from aquaculture ponds, in sterilized diluted form, has the potential to be used as an effective medium for the culture of microalgae. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Brafv600e and Ctbn1 Mutational Study in Rathke's Cleft Cysts
Aim: Rathke's cleft cysts and craniopharyngiomas tipically involve sellar region and their histogenetic relationship
is still matter of debate. Clinical and histopathologic differentiation of cystic lesions from the sellar region, that is,
craniopharyngiomas (CPs) and Rathke cleft cysts (RCCs), is challenging and has great importance with respect to
variable clinical manifestation and adapted surgical treatment strategies in both entities. The recent acquisition that
adamantinomatous and papillary craniopharyngiomas bear distinct molecular alterations i.e., β-catenin (CTNNB1)
and BRAFv600 mutations respectively, has suggest to screen for such alteration a series of Rathke cyst to seek a
possible relation with one of the two craniopharyngioma type.
Methods: Seven Rathke's cleft cysts were analyzed for BRAF and CTNNB1 mutational status by sequencing and
immunohistochemistry. Radiological, clinical and histological features were performed.
Results: None of the 7 Rathke's cleft cysts harbor BRAFV600E mutation. No CTNNB1 mutation was found.
Radiological, clinical and histological re-evaluation of the cases confirmed the diagnosis of Rathke's cleft cysts.
Conclusion: BRAFV600E and CTNNB1 mutations appeared, as most reliable factor for the differentiation
between purely cystic CPs and RCCs, whereas tumor location, tumor size, and radiological parameter of the tumor
were less consistent parameters. This study again confirms that craniopharyngiomas (CPs) and Rathke cleft cysts
(RCCs), are associated with distinct pathogenic pathways
Mentorship in Radiography: an Indispensable Tool for Sustainable Healthcare Transformation
Background: The concept of mentorship has gained widespread popularity in literature across different walks of life owing to the significant benefits attached to it.
Purpose: This paper intends to discuss the need for mentorship in radiography, as an indispensable tool for a sustainable healthcare transformation, taking clues from other health science disciplines and medicine.
Method: Authors reviewed relevant literature on the subject to have an in-depth and updated knowledge both in the health sciences as well as in other disciplines. Search engines such as Google Scholar, My Websearch, and data base such as Science Direct, Hinari, Taylor and Francis and Medknow were consulted. Several articles that discussed mentorship across various disciplines were reviewed. Those with ideas and concepts that fit into the purpose of the study were included.
Results: Several definitions and types of mentorship exist across different walks of life based on literature. However, we decided to adopt the definition of mentorship and types of mentorship by Feldman, who defined mentorship as a dynamic, reciprocal relationship in a work environment between an advanced career incumbent and a beginner, aimed at promoting the development of both. The uniform agreement across various disciplines is that mentoring is a crucial component of success. However, its application in radiography is inadequate.
Conclusion: In view of the apparent benefits accruable to mentorship globally, stakeholders in radiography should make mentorship a priority, if we must maintain our role in a sustainable healthcare transformation.

Agrobacterium-mediated gene delivery and transient expression in the red macroalga Chondrus crispus
Molecular resources and transgenic studies in red algae are lagging behind those for green algae. The Agrobacterium-mediated gene-transfer method routinely used in plant transformation has not been fully utilised in the red algae, which, as an important source of phycocolloids, warrant more studies. In this regard, a stepwise methodology was developed for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of the carrageenophyte Chondrus crispus using pCAMBIA 1301 and a construct featuring a codon-optimized beta-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene driven by the endogenous Chondrus actin promoter. The effects of several factors on transformation efficiency were investigated. An intimate association of Chondrus and bacterial cells was observed using scanning electron microscopy. GUS transient expression within Chondrus cortical and medullary cells with both expression cassettes testified to the amenability of Chondrus to Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Darker staining, indicative of higher GUS activity, was observed with the Chondrus-specific construct, suggesting its superiority over the pCAMBIA 1301. Presence of acetosyringone, the wounding method and the type of co-cultivation medium significantly affected the transformation outcome and efficiency. The Agrobacterium-mediated transient expression presented here constitutes a first step towards tailoring a transformation strategy for Chondrus, which can serve to facilitate further transgenic studies in this important red alga
