Boron Abundances in Main Sequence B-type Stars: A Test of Rotational Depletion during Main Sequence Evolution
Boron abundances have been derived for seven main sequence B-type stars from
HST STIS spectra around the B III 2066 A line. In two stars, boron appears to
be undepleted with respect to the presumed initial abundance. In one star,
boron is detectable but it is clearly depleted. In the other four stars, boron
is undetectable implying depletions of 1 to 2 dex. Three of these four stars
are nitrogen enriched, but the fourth shows no enrichment of nitrogen. Only
rotationally induced mixing predicts that boron depletions are unaccompanied by
nitrogen enrichments. The inferred rate of boron depletion from our
observations is in good agreement with these predictions. Other boron-depleted
nitrogen-normal stars are identified from the literature. Also, several
boron-depleted nitrogen-rich stars are identified, and while all fall on the
boron-nitrogen trend predicted by rotationally-induced mixing, a majority have
nitrogen enrichments that are not uniquely explained by rotation.
The spectra have also been used to determine iron-group (Cr, Mn, Fe, and Ni)
abundances. The seven B-type stars have near solar iron-group abundances, as
expected for young stars in the solar neighborhood. We have also analysed the
halo B-type star, PG0832+676. We find [Fe/H] = -0.88 +/- 0.10, and the absence
of the B III line gives the upper limit [B/H]<2.5. These and other published

Expressiveness modulo Bisimilarity of Regular Expressions with Parallel Composition (Extended Abstract)
The languages accepted by finite automata are precisely the languages denoted
by regular expressions. In contrast, finite automata may exhibit behaviours
that cannot be described by regular expressions up to bisimilarity. In this
paper, we consider extensions of the theory of regular expressions with various
forms of parallel composition and study the effect on expressiveness. First we
prove that adding pure interleaving to the theory of regular expressions
strictly increases its expressiveness up to bisimilarity. Then, we prove that
replacing the operation for pure interleaving by ACP-style parallel composition
gives a further increase in expressiveness. Finally, we prove that the theory
of regular expressions with ACP-style parallel composition and encapsulation is
expressive enough to express all finite automata up to bisimilarity. Our
results extend the expressiveness results obtained by Bergstra, Bethke and
Ponse for process algebras with (the binary variant of) Kleene's star

Distribution of compact object mergers around galaxies
Compact object mergers are one of the currently favored models for the origin
of GRBs. The discovery of optical afterglows and identification of the nearest,
presumably host, galaxies allows the analysis of the distribution of burst
sites with respect to these galaxies. Using a model of stellar binary evolution
we synthesize a population of compact binary systems which merge within the
Hubble time. We include the kicks in the supernovae explosions and calculate
orbits of these binaries in galactic gravitational potentials. We present the
resulting distribution of merger sites and discuss the results in the framework

The Projected Rotational Velocity Distribution of a Sample of OB stars from a Calibration based on Synthetic He I lines
We derive projected rotational velocities (vsini) for a sample of 156
Galactic OB star members of 35 clusters, HII regions, and associations. The HeI
lines at 4026, 4388, and 4471A were analyzed in order to define
a calibration of the synthetic HeI full-widths at half maximum versus stellar
vsini. A grid of synthetic spectra of HeI line profiles was calculated in
non-LTE using an extensive helium model atom and updated atomic data. The
vsini's for all stars were derived using the He I FWHM calibrations but also,
for those target stars with relatively sharp lines, vsini values were obtained
from best fit synthetic spectra of up to 40 lines of CII, NII, OII, AlIII,
MgII, SiIII, and SIII. This calibration is a useful and efficient tool for
estimating the projected rotational velocities of O9-B5 main-sequence stars.
The distribution of vsini for an unbiased sample of early B stars in the
unbound association Cep OB2 is consistent with the distribution reported
elsewhere for other unbound associations.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journa
UBVI and Ha Photometry of the h & chi Persei cluster
UBVI and Ha photometry is presented for 17319 stars in vicinity of the young
double cluster h & chi Persei. Our photometry extends over a 37arcmin x 1arcdeg
field centered on the association. We construct reddening contours within the
imaged field. We find that the two clusters share a common distance modulus of
11.750.05 and ages of log age(yr) = 7.10.1. From the V-Ha colour, a
measure of the Ha emission strength, we conduct a survey for emission line
objects within the association. We detect a sample of 33 Be stars, 8 of which
are new detections. We present a scenario of evolutionary enhancement of the Be
phenomenon to account for the peak in Be fraction towards the top of the
main-sequence in the population of h & chi Persei and similar young clusters.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, AJ Jul
Feasibility and reliability of PRISMA-Medical for specialty-based incident analysis
Aims and objectives: In this study, the feasibility and reliability of the Prevention Recovery Information System for Monitoring and Analysis (PRISMA)-Medical method for systematic, specialty-based analysis and classification of incidents in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) were determined.
Methods: After the introduction of a Neonatology System for Analysis and Feedback on Medical Events (NEOSAFE) in eight tertiary care NICUs and one paediatric surgical ICU, PRISMA-Medical was started to be used to identify root causes of voluntary reported incidents by multidisciplinary unit patient safety committees. Committee members were PRISMA-trained and familiar with the department and its processes. In this study, the results of PRISMA-analysis of incidents reported during the first year are described. At t¿=¿3 months and t¿=¿12 months after introduction, test cases were performed to measure agreement at three levels of root cause classification using PRISMA-Medical. Inter-rater reliability was determined by calculating generalised ¿ values for each level of classification.
Results: During the study period, 981 out of 1786 eligible incidents (55%) were analysed for underlying root causes. In total, 2313 root causes were identified and classified, giving an average of 2.4 root causes for every incident. Although substantial agreement (¿ 0.70–0.81) was reached at the main level of root cause classification of the test cases (discrimination between technical, organisational and human failure) and agreement among the committees at the second level (discrimination between skill-based, rule-based and knowledge-based errors) was acceptable (¿ 0.53–0.59), discrimination between rule-based errors (the third level of classification) was more difficult to assess (¿ 0.40–0.47).
Conclusion: With some restraints, PRISMA-Medical proves to be both feasible and acceptably reliable to identify and classify multiple causes of medical events in the NICU
Usefulness of a Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Response Test to Demonstrate Rapid Onset Analgesia with Phenytoin 10% Cream in Polyneuropathy
Purpose: Topical analgesics are an upcoming treatment option for neuropathic pain. In this observational study, we performed a double-blind placebo-controlled response test (DOBRET) in patients with polyneuropathy to determine the personalized analgesic effect of phenytoin 10% cream. Patients and Methods: In a double-blind fashion, 12 consecutive adult patients with symmetrical painful polyneuropathy and equal pain intensity of ≥4 on the 11-point numerical rating scale (NRS) applied phenytoin10% cream on one painful area and a placebo cream on the corresponding contralateral area. We defined responders as patients who experienced a pain reduction ≥2 NRS points from baseline and ≥1 NRS point difference in pain reduction in favour of phenytoin 10% cream compared with placebo cream within 30 minutes after application. We also evaluated the percentage of pain reduction and frequency of 30% and 50% pain relief from baseline. Results: Six patients (50%) were responders. Compared with placebo cream, pain reduction was higher in phenytoin 10% cream-applied areas with mean difference in pain reduction of 1.3 (95% CI: 1.1 to 1.8; p<0.001) on the NRS and mean percentage difference in pain reduction of 22% (95% CI: 13% to 32%; p =0.03). All responders had at least 30% pain reduction, and 4 out of 6 had at least 50% pain reduction in the phenytoin 10% cream applied area. All non-responders had less than 30% pain reduction. No side effects were reported. Conclusion: A DOBRET is easy to perform, quickly identifies an analgesic effect in responders and could be a useful tool to personalize neuropathic pain treatment with topical formulations
Specialty-based, voluntary incident reporting in neonatal intensive care: description of 4846 incident reports
OBJECTIVES: To examine the characteristics of incidents reported after introduction of a voluntary, non-punitive incident reporting system for neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in the Netherlands; and to investigate which types of reported incident pose the highest risk to patients in the NICU. DESIGN: Prospective multicentre survey. METHODS: Voluntary, non-punitive incident reporting was introduced in eight level III NICUs and one paediatric surgical ICU. An incident was defined as any unintended event which (could have) reduced the safety margin for the patient. Multidisciplinary, unit-based patient safety committees systematically collected and analysed incident reports, and assigned risk scores to each reported incident. Data were centrally collected for specialty-based analysis. This paper describes the characteristics of incidents reported during the first year. Bivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify high-risk incident categories. RESULTS: There were 5225 incident reports on 3859 admissions, of which 4846 were eligible for analysis. Incidents with medication were most frequently reported (27%), followed by laboratory (10%) and enteral nutrition (8%). Severe harm was described in seven incident reports, and moderate harm in 63 incident reports. Incidents involving mechanical ventilation and blood products were most likely to be assigned high-risk scores, followed by those involving parenteral nutrition, intravascular lines and medication dosing errors. CONCLUSIONS: Incidents occur much more frequently in Dutch NICUs than has been previously observed, and their impact on patient morbidity is considerable. Reported incidents concerning mechanical ventilation, blood products, intravascular lines, parenteral nutrition and medication dosing errors pose the highest risk to patients in the NIC
Principles for transformative ocean governance
With a focus on oceans, we collaborated across ecological, social and legal disciplines to respond to the United Nations call for transformation in the ‘2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’. We developed a set of 13 principles that strategically and critically connect transformative ocean research to transformative ocean governance (complementing the UN Decade for Ocean Science). We used a rigorous, iterative and transparent consensus-building approach to define the principles, which can interact in supporting, neutral or sometimes conflicting ways. We recommend that the principles could be applied as a comprehensive set and discuss how to learn from their interactions, particularly those that reveal hidden tensions. The principles can bring and keep together partnerships for innovative ocean action. This action must respond to the many calls to reform current ocean-use practices which are based on economic growth models that have perpetuated inequities and fuelled conflict and environmental decline
