Asymptotically exact trial wave functions for yrast states of rotating Bose gases
We revisit the composite fermion (CF) construction of the lowest angular
momentum yrast states of rotating Bose gases with weak short range interaction.
For angular momenta at and below the single vortex, , the overlaps
between these trial wave functions and the corresponding exact solutions {\it
increase} with increasing system size and appear to approach unity in the
thermodynamic limit. In the special case , this remarkable behaviour was
previously observed numerically. Here we present methods to address this point
analytically, and find strongly suggestive evidence in favour of similar
behaviour for all . While not constituting a fully conclusive proof
of the converging overlaps, our results do demonstrate a striking similarity
between the analytic structure of the exact ground state wave functions at , and that of their CF counterparts. Results are given for two different
projection methods commonly used in the CF approach
Space shuttle navigation analysis. Volume 1: GPS aided navigation
Analytical studies related to space shuttle navigation are presented. Studies related to the addition of NAVSTAR Global Positioning System user equipment to the shuttle avionics suite are presented. The GPS studies center about navigation accuracy covariance analyses for both developmental and operational phases of GPS, as well as for various orbiter mission phases
Edge State Tunneling in a Split Hall Bar Model
In this paper we introduce and study the correlation functions of a chiral
one-dimensional electron model intended to qualitatively represent narrow Hall
bars separated into left and right sections by a penetrable barrier. The model
has two parameters representing respectively interactions between top and
bottom edges of the Hall bar and interactions between the edges on opposite
sides of the barrier. We show that the scaling dimensions of tunneling
processes depend on the relative strengths of the interactions, with repulsive
interactions across the Hall bar tending to make breaks in the barrier
irrelevant. The model can be solved analytically and is characterized by a
difference between the dynamics of even and odd Fourier components. We address
its experimental relevance by comparing its predictions with those of a more
geometrically realistic model that must be solved numerically.Comment: 13 pages, including 4 figures, final version as publishe
Numerical Tests of the Chiral Luttinger Liquid Theory for Fractional Hall Edges
We report on microscopic numerical studies which support the chiral Luttinger
liquid theory of the fractional Hall edge proposed by Wen. Our calculations are
based in part on newly proposed and accurate many-body trial wavefunctions for
the low-energy edge excitations of fractional incompressible states.Comment: 12 pages + 1 figure, Revte
Cavity QED of Strongly Correlated Electron Systems: A No-go Theorem for Photon Condensation
In spite of decades of work it has remained unclear whether or not
superradiant quantum phases, referred to here as photon condensates, can occur
in equilibrium. In this Letter, we first show that when a non-relativistic
quantum many-body system is coupled to a cavity field, gauge invariance forbids
photon condensation. We then present a microscopic theory of the cavity quantum
electrodynamics of an extended Falicov-Kimball model, showing that, in
agreement with the general theorem, its insulating ferroelectric and exciton
condensate phases are not altered by the cavity and do not support photon
condensation.Comment: Reference list updated and minor typos correcte
Statistics of real eigenvalues in Ginibre's Ensemble of random real matrices
The integrable structure of Ginibre's orthogonal ensemble of random matrices is looked at through the prism of the probability pn,k to find exactly k real eigenvalues in the spectrum of an nĂ—n real asymmetric Gaussian random matrix. The exact solution for the probability function pn,k is presented, and its remarkable connection to the theory of symmetric functions is revealed. An extension of the Dyson integration theorem is a key ingredient of the theory presented
Bilinear identities on Schur symmetric functions
A series of bilinear identities on the Schur symmetric functions is obtained
with the use of Pluecker relations.Comment: Accepted to Journal of Nonlinear Mathematical Physics. A reference to

Edge Magnetoplasmons in Quantum Hall Line Junction Systems
A quantum Hall line junction system consists of a one-dimensional Luttinger
liquid (LL) and two chiral channels that allow density waves incident upon and
reflected by the LL to be measured separately. We demonstrate that interactions
in a quantum Hall line junction system can be probed by studying edge
magnetoplasmon absorption spectra and their polarization dependences. Strong
interactions in the junction lead to collective modes that are isolated in
either Luttinger liquid or contact subsystems.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. B Rapid Communicatio
Observability of counterpropagating modes at fractional-quantum-Hall edges
When the bulk filling factor is equal to 1 - 1/m with m odd, at least one
counterpropagating chiral collective mode occurs simultaneously with
magnetoplasmons at the edge of fractional-quantum-Hall samples. Initial
experimental searches for an additional mode were unsuccessful. In this paper,
we address conditions under which its observation should be expected in
experiments where the electronic system is excited and probed by capacitive
coupling. We derive realistic expressions for the velocity of the slow
counterpropagating mode, starting from a microscopic calculation which is
simplified by a Landau-Silin-like separation between long-range Hartree and
residual interactions. The microscopic calculation determines the stiffness of
the edge to long-wavelength neutral excitations, which fixes the slow-mode
velocity, and the effective width of the edge region, which influences the
magnetoplasmon dispersion.Comment: 18 pages, RevTex, 6 figures, final version to be published in
