Love kills: Simulations in Penna Ageing Model
The standard Penna ageing model with sexual reproduction is enlarged by
adding additional bit-strings for love: Marriage happens only if the male love
strings are sufficiently different from the female ones. We simulate at what

Parallaxes of southern extremely cool objects III : 118 L and T dwarfs
We present new results from the Parallaxes of Southern Extremely Cool dwarfs program to measure parallaxes, proper motions and multiepoch photometry of L and early T dwarfs. The observations were made on 108 nights over the course of 8 yr using the Wide Field Imager on the ESO 2.2m telescope. We present 118 new parallaxes of L and T dwarfs of which 52 have no published values and 24 of the 66 published values are preliminary estimates from this program. The parallax precision varies from 1.0 to 15.5mas with a median of 3.8mas. We find evidence for two objects with long term photometric variation and 24 new moving group candidates. We cross-match our sample to published photometric catalogues and find standard magnitudes in up to 16 pass-bands from which we build spectral energy distributions and H-R diagrams. This allows us to confirm the theoretically anticipated minimum in radius between stars and brown dwarfs across the hydrogen burning minimum mass. We find the minimum occurs between L2 and L6 and verify the predicted steep dependence of radius in the hydrogen burning regime and the gentle rise into the degenerate brown dwarf regime. Spin picture of the one-dimensional Hubbard model: Two-fluid structure and phase dynamics
We propose a scheme for investigating the quantum dynamics of interacting
electron models by means of time-dependent variational principle and spin
coherent states of space lattice operators. We apply such a scheme to the
one-dimensional hubbard model, and solve the resulting equations in different
regimes. In particular, we find that at low densities the dynamics is mapped
into two coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations, whereas near half-filling
the model is described by two coupled Josephson junction arrays. Focusing then
to the case in which only the phases of the spin variables are dynamically
active, we examine a number of different solutions corresponding to the
excitations of few macroscopic modes. Based on fixed point equation of the
simpler among them, we show that the standard one-band ground state phase space

Does Good Mutation Help You Live Longer?
We study the dynamics of an age-structured population in which the life
expectancy of an offspring may be mutated with respect to that of its parent.
When advantageous mutation is favored, the average fitness of the population
grows linearly with time , while in the opposite case the average fitness is
constant. For no mutational bias, the average fitness grows as t^{2/3}. The
average age of the population remains finite in all cases and paradoxically is

Detrended Fluctuation Analysis of Systolic Blood Pressure Control Loop
We use detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) to study the dynamics of blood
pressure oscillations and its feedback control in rats by analyzing systolic
pressure time series before and after a surgical procedure that interrupts its
control loop. We found, for each situation, a crossover between two scaling
regions characterized by exponents that reflect the nature of the feedback
control and its range of operation. In addition, we found evidences of
adaptation in the dynamics of blood pressure regulation a few days after
surgical disruption of its main feedback circuit. Based on the paradigm of
antagonistic, bipartite (vagal and sympathetic) action of the central nerve
system, we propose a simple model for pressure homeostasis as the balance
between two nonlinear opposing forces, successfully reproducing the crossover
observed in the DFA of actual pressure signals
The Heumann-Hotzel model for aging revisited
Since its proposition in 1995, the Heumann-Hotzel model has remained as an
obscure model of biological aging. The main arguments used against it were its
apparent inability to describe populations with many age intervals and its
failure to prevent a population extinction when only deleterious mutations are
present. We find that with a simple and minor change in the model these
difficulties can be surmounted. Our numerical simulations show a plethora of
interesting features: the catastrophic senescence, the Gompertz law and that
postponing the reproduction increases the survival probability, as has already

Spectral Properties of Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates
We investigate the energy spectrum structure of a system of two (identical)
interacting bosonic wells occupied by N bosons within the Schwinger realization
of the angular momentum. This picture enables us to recognize the symmetry
properties of the system Hamiltonian H and to use them for characterizing the
energy eigenstates. Also, it allows for the derivation of the single-boson
picture which is shown to be the background picture naturally involved by the
secular equation for H. After deriving the corresponding eigenvalue equation,
we recast it in a recursive N-dependent form which suggests a way to generate
the level doublets (characterizing the H spectrum) via suitable inner
parameters. Finally, we show how the presence of doublets in the spectrum
allows to recover, in the classical limit, the symmetry breaking effect that
