Charge ordering of magnetic monopoles in triangular spin ice patterns
Artificial spin ice offers the possibility to investigate a variety of
dipolar orderings, spin frustrations and ground states. However, the most
fascinating aspect is the realization that magnetic charge order can be
established without spin order. We have investigated magnetic dipoles arranged
on a honeycomb lattice as a function of applied field, using magnetic force
microscopy. For the easy direction with the field parallel to one of the three
dipole sublattices we observe at coercivity a maximum of spin frustration and
simultaneously a maximum of charge order of magnetic monopoles with alternating

Iron single crystal growth from a lithium-rich melt
\alpha-Fe single crystals of rhombic dodecahedral habit were grown from a
melt of LiNFe. Crystals of several millimeter along a
side form at temperatures around C. Upon further cooling
the growth competes with the formation of Fe-doped LiN. The b.c.c.
structure and good sample quality of \alpha-Fe single crystals were confirmed
by X-ray and electron diffraction as well as magnetization measurements and
chemical analysis. A nitrogen concentration of 90\,ppm was detected by means of
carrier gas hot extraction. Scanning electron microscopy did not reveal any
sign of iron nitride precipitates.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

A backswept impeller with design mass flow rate of 1.033 kg/sec was tested with both a vaned diffuser and a vaneless diffuser to establish stage and impeller characteristics. Design stage pressure ratio of 5.9:1 was attained at a flow slightly lower than the design value. Flow range at design speed was 6 percent of choking flow. Impeller axial tip clearance at design speed was varied to determine effect on stage and impeller performance

A 13.65 cm tip diameter backswept centrifugal impeller having a tandem inducer and a design mass flow rate of 0.907 kg/sec was experimentally investigated to establish stage and impeller characteristics. Tests were conducted with both a cascade diffuser and a vaneless diffuser. A pressure ratio of 5.9 was obtained near surge for the smallest clearance tested. Flow range at design speed was 6.3 percent for the smallest clearance test. Impeller exit to shroud axial clearance at design speed was varied to determine the effect on stage and impeller performance
Bounds on Lorentz and CPT Violation from the Earth-Ionosphere Cavity
Electromagnetic resonant cavities form the basis of many tests of Lorentz
invariance involving photons. The effects of some forms of Lorentz violation
scale with cavity size. We investigate possible signals of violations in the
naturally occurring resonances formed in the Earth-ionosphere cavity.
Comparison with observed resonances places the first terrestrial constraints on
coefficients associated with dimension-three Lorentz-violating operators at the
level of 10^{-20} GeV.Comment: 8 pages REVTe
Evidence for charge orbital and spin stripe order in an overdoped manganite
We present diffraction data on a single-layered manganite
La(0.42)Sr(1.58)MnO4 with hole doping (x>0.5). Overdoped La(0.42)Sr(1.58)MnO4
exhibits a complex ordering of charges, orbitals and spins. Single crystal
neutron diffraction experiments reveal three incommensurate and one
commensurate order parameters to be tightly coupled. The position and the shape
of the distinct superstructure scattering points to a stripe arrangement in
which ferromagnetic zigzag chains are disrupted by additional Mn4+ stripes
Coastal sea surface temperature variability along the south coast of South Africa and the relationship to regional and global climate
The southern coastline of South Africa is approximately zonal, with a wide (up to 270 km) shelf region. Intense thermoclines are known to be established by insolation on the inner shelf region during summer, upwelling is generated by easterly-component winds, and occasionally Agulhas Current water can be advected close to the coast, particularly in the east. These processes induce daily and seasonal fluctuations of coastal sea-surface temperature (SST), but their influence over longer time scales (interannual) has not yet been tested. Here time series of SST ranging from 12 to 31 years are examined for inter-relationships with local and regional winds, and the southern oscillation index (SOI). The emphasis is on the summer period, and it is found that the correlation between SST and major axis wind anomalies can be improved substantially by considering the frequency of occurrence of winds above given thresholds. Moreover, winds and SSTs are also correlated with the SOI, such that fewer easterly-component winds are experienced at low phases (El Nino) with consequent increases in coastal SST, and correspondingly more easterly-component winds at high phases (La Nina) result in decreased coastal SST; however, these relationships did not hold for a measuring site within a large open bay area. Long-term trends are also established, with substantial increases in SST (0.25°C/decade) in association with greater increases in air temperature (0.36°C/ decade)
Determination of the Weak Axial Vector Coupling from a Measurement of the Beta-Asymmetry Parameter A in Neutron Beta Decay
We report on a new measurement of the neutron beta-asymmetry parameter
with the instrument \perkeo. Main advancements are the high neutron
polarization of from a novel arrangement of super mirror
polarizers and reduced background from improvements in beam line and shielding.
Leading corrections were thus reduced by a factor of 4, pushing them below the
level of statistical error and resulting in a significant reduction of
systematic uncertainty compared to our previous experiments. From the result

Longitudinal analysis of the developing rhesus monkey brain using magnetic resonance imaging: birth to adulthood.
We have longitudinally assessed normative brain growth patterns in naturalistically reared Macaca mulatta monkeys. Postnatal to early adulthood brain development in two cohorts of rhesus monkeys was analyzed using magnetic resonance imaging. Cohort A consisted of 24 rhesus monkeys (12 male, 12 female) and cohort B of 21 monkeys (11 male, 10 female). All subjects were scanned at 1, 4, 8, 13, 26, 39, and 52Â weeks; cohort A had additional scans at 156Â weeks (3Â years) and 260Â weeks (5Â years). Age-specific segmentation templates were developed for automated volumetric analyses of the T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scans. Trajectories of total brain size as well as cerebral and subcortical subdivisions were evaluated over this period. Total brain volume was about 64Â % of adult estimates in the 1-week-old monkey. Brain volume of the male subjects was always, on average, larger than the female subjects. While brain volume generally increased between any two imaging time points, there was a transient plateau of brain growth between 26 and 39Â weeks in both cohorts of monkeys. The trajectory of enlargement differed across cortical regions with the occipital cortex demonstrating the most idiosyncratic pattern of maturation and the frontal and temporal lobes showing the greatest and most protracted growth. A variety of allometric measurements were also acquired and body weight gain was most closely associated with the rate of brain growth. These findings provide a valuable baseline for the effects of fetal and early postnatal manipulations on the pattern of abnormal brain growth related to neurodevelopmental disorders
