Declaratory Judgments - The widespread interest in this ntw form of remedial instrument, which was. somewhat dashed by the recent decision of the Michigan Supreme. Court \u27n Amwmy v. Grand Ropds.Ry. Co. (r920), 211 Mich. 59, holding declaritoty relief to b! non-judicial and -outside the constitutional power of \u27courts (9ig MicH. LAw Rzv. 86), has been revived by the action of\u27the legislature of. Kansas in enacting a derlaratory judgment statute almost identical with the .Michigan act.. This was done with full knowledge of the decision in the .4mmy case, and inasmuch -as it is well known that some of the judges oti\u27the Supreme Court of Kansas have taken an active interest in advocating this reform, it is fair to assume that the act is likely tQ escape the constitutionalguillotine The English judges. have for two geneiations or m9re been the.chief proponents of English procedural. reform, and nothing *ould be more universally welcomed in this country than the generous participation and leadership of our high. judges in the efforts of\u27the public to. make\u27the administration of justice .more respoksive to social needs

Retroperitoneal liposarcoma associated with small plaque parapsoriasis

Abstract

Background

Extremely rare cases of paraneoplastic syndromes or ectopic production of proteins associated with liposarcoma are reported in literature. Production of Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor, alpha-fetoprotein, paraneoplastic pemphigus and leucocytosis, Acrokeratosis paraneoplastica (Bazex's syndrome) are reported.

The present report describes a case of retroperitoneal liposarcoma associated with small plaque parapsoriasis. Our search in the English literature of such a kind of association did not reveal any case reported.

Case presentation

A 74 year male patient was admitted to our hospital because of the presence of an abdominal mass in right iliac fossa. He also complained of a two-year history of psoriasiform eruptions. The CT scan showed a retroperitoneal pelvic mass. Therefore surgical resection of the tumor was performed. After surgery, the skin eruptions disappeared completely in seven days and so a diagnosis of parapsoriasis syndrome was done.

Conclusion

Parallel disappearing of skin eruptions after surgery, typical clinical picture and not specific histology of the cutaneous lesions suggest the diagnosis of small plaque parapsoriasis. Therefore we propose to add Small Plaque Parapsoriasis to the list of paraneoplastic syndromes associated to liposarcoma.</p

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma with leukocytosis. A case report of G-CSF-producing soft-tissue tumors, possible association with undifferentiated liposarcoma lineage

Abstract

Background

Granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) functions as a hematopoietic growth factor and it is responsible for leukocytosis. G-CSF-producing tumors associated with leukocytosis include various types of malignancies.

Case presentation

We report the case of a 72-year-old man with dedifferentiated liposarcoma characterized by dedifferentiated components of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH)-like features in addition to well-differentiated lipoma-like liposarcoma, arising from his upper arm. Preoperative laboratory data showed leukocytosis (103,700/μl). The serum level of G-CSF was also elevated (620 pg/ml [normal, <8 pg/ml]). Nine days after the surgery, the leukocytosis was relieved (WBC; 6,920/μl) and the elevated serum G-CSF level was significantly decreased (G-CSF; 12 pg/ml). One month after the surgery, leukocytosis gradually began to appear again. Three months after the surgery metastatic lung lesions were confirmed, and the patient subsequently died of respiratory problems. In the English literature regarding soft-tissue tumors with leukocytosis, including the current case, we could review a total of 6 cases of liposarcoma with leukocytosis. The subtype of these 6 liposarcoma cases was undifferentiated liposarcoma, comprising dedifferentiated liposarcoma in 4 cases and pleomorphic liposarcoma in 2 cases.

Conclusion

Since the only other soft-tissue tumor that was associated with leukocytosis was MFH, and since MFH is characterized by the absence of any specific differentiation, we would like to propose a possible association between G-CSF-producing soft-tissue tumors and an undifferentiated liposarcoma lineage, such as dedifferentiated liposarcoma or pleomorphic liposarcoma.</p

5-Fluorouracil response in a large panel of colorectal cancer cell lines is associated with mismatch repair deficiency

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is (CRC) one of the commonest cancers and its therapy is still based on few drugs. Currently, no biological criteria are used to choose the most effective of the established drugs for treatment. METHODS: A panel of 77 CRC cell lines was tested for sensitivity to 5-fluorouracil (5FU) using the SRB assay. The responses were grouped into three categories and correlated with genetic changes in the cell lines. RESULTS: The strongest and most clearcut correlation was between 5-fluorouracil response and replication error status (mismatch repair deficiency). All the other significant correlations (loss of heterozygosity for DCC and mutations in TGFbIIR) are secondary to the association with replication error status. INTERPRETATION AND CONCLUSION: Our findings validate previous analyses based mainly on clinical data, and indicate that replication error status could be a useful guide to 5-fluorouracil-based CRC therapy. Essentially, all previously described correlations with 5FU response are secondary to the association with replication error status

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) have been considered as potential therapeutic targets in cholangiocarcinoma, but no studies have yet clarified the clinicopathological or prognostic significance of these molecules. Immunohistochemical expression of these molecules was assessed retrospectively in 236 cases of cholangiocarcinoma, as well as associations between the expression of these molecules and clinicopathological factors or clinical outcome. The proportions of positive cases for EGFR, VEGF, and HER2 overexpression were 27.4, 53.8, and 0.9% in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHCC), and 19.2, 59.2, and 8.5% in extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (EHCC), respectively. Clinicopathologically, EGFR overexpression was associated with macroscopic type (P=0.0120), lymph node metastasis (P=0.0006), tumour stage (P=0.0424), lymphatic vessel invasion (P=0.0371), and perineural invasion (P=0.0459) in EHCC, and VEGF overexpression with intrahepatic metastasis (P=0.0224) in IHCC. Multivariate analysis showed that EGFR expression was a significant prognostic factor (hazard ratio (HR), 2.67; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.52–4.69; P=0.0006) and also a risk factor for tumour recurrence (HR, 1.89; 95% CI, 1.05–3.39, P=0.0335) in IHCC. These results suggest that EGFR expression is associated with tumour progression and VEGF expression may be involved in haematogenic metastasis in cholangiocarcinoma
