Persistent organic pollutants have been increasingly detected in natural waters, and this represents a real challenge to the quality of this resource. To remove these species, advanced treatment technologies are required. Among these technologies, Fenton-like and photo-Fenton-like processes have been investigated for the removal of pollutants from water. Delicate aspects of photo-Fenton processes are that light-driven processes are energy intensive and require a fair amount of chemical inputs, which strongly affects their overall environmental burdens. At present, aside from determining the efficiency of the processes to remove pollutants of a particular technology, it becomes fundamental to assess also the environmental sustainability of the overall process. In this work, the methodology of the life cycle assessment (LCA) was applied to identify the hotspots of using magnetite particles covered with humic acid (Fe3O4/HA) as a heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst for water remediation. The sustainability of the overall process was considered, and a comparative LCA study was performed between H2O2 and persulfate activation at different pH. The addition of humic substances to the particles allows the effectiveness of the catalyst to improve without increasing the environmental impacts; these processes are strongly correlated with energy consumption and therefore with the efficiency of the process. For this reason, working at acidic pH allows us to contain the impacts

Spitzer Observations of the z=2.73 Lensed Lyman Break Galaxy, MS1512-cB58

We present Spitzer infrared (IR) photometry and spectroscopy of the lensed Lyman break galaxy (LBG), MS1512-cB58 at z=2.73. The large (factor ~30) magnification allows for the most detailed infrared study of an L*_UV(z=3) LBG to date. Broadband photometry with IRAC (3-10 micron), IRS (16 micron), and MIPS (24, 70 & 160 micron) was obtained as well as IRS spectroscopy spanning 5.5-35 microns. A fit of stellar population models to the optical/near-IR/IRAC photometry gives a young age (~9 Myr), forming stars at ~98 M_sun/yr, with a total stellar mass of ~10^9 M_sun formed thus far. The existence of an old stellar population with twice the stellar mass can not be ruled out. IR spectral energy distribution fits to the 24 and 70 micron photometry, as well as previously obtained submm/mm, data give an intrinsic IR luminosity L_IR = 1-2 x10^11 L_sun and a star formation rate, SFR ~20-40 M_sun/yr. The UV derived star formation rate (SFR) is ~3-5 times higher than the SFR determined using L_IR or L_Halpha because the red UV spectral slope is significantly over predicting the level of dust extinction. This suggests that the assumed Calzetti starburst obscuration law may not be valid for young LBGs. We detect strong line emission from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) at 6.2, 7.7, and 8.6 microns. The line ratios are consistent with ratios observed in both local and high redshift starbursts. Both the PAH and rest-frame 8 micron luminosities predict the total L_IR based on previously measured relations in starbursts. Finally, we do not detect the 3.3 micron PAH feature. This is marginally inconsistent with some PAH emission models, but still consistent with PAH ratios measured in many local star-forming galaxies.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. aastex format, 18 pages, 7 figure

Urban biowaste-derived sensitizing materials for caffeine photodegradation

[EN] Caffeine-photosensitized degradation has been studied in the presence of bio-based materials derived from urban biowaste after aerobic aging. A peculiar fraction (namely bio-based substances (BBSs)), soluble in all the pH range, has been used as photosensitizing agent. Several caffeine photodegradation tests have been performed, and positive results have been obtained in the presence of BBSs and H2O2, without and with additional Fe(II) (photo-Fenton-like process). Moreover, hybrid magnetite-BBS nanoparticles have been synthesized and characterized, in order to improve the sensitizer recovery and reuse after the caffeine degradation. In the presence of such nanoparticles and H2O2 and Fe(II), the complete caffeine degradation has been attained in very short time. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous processes were run at pH = 5, milder condition compared to the classic photo-Fenton process. This work was performed with the financial support for academic interchange by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Research and Innovation Staff Exchange project funded by the European Commission H2020-MSCA-RISE-2014 within the framework of the research project MAT4TREAT (project number 645551). Volatile Organic Compounds in the Po Basin. Part A: Anthropogenic VOCs

Measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were performed in the Po Basin, northern Italy in early summer 1998 within the PIPAPO project as well as in summer 2002 and autumn 2003 within the FORMAT project. During the three campaigns, trace gases and meteorological parameters were measured at a semi-rural station, around 35 km north of the city center of Milan. Low toluene and benzene concentrations and lower toluene to benzene ratios on weekends, on Sundays, and in August enabled the identification of a ‘weekend' and a ‘vacation' effect when anthropogenic emissions were lower due to less traffic and reduced industrial activities, respectively. Recurrent nighttime cyclohexane peaks suggested a periodical short-term release of cyclohexane close to the semi-rural sampling site. A multivariate receptor model analysis resulted in the distinction of different characteristic concentration profiles attributed to natural gas, biogenic impact, vehicle exhaust, industrial activities, and a single cyclohexane sourc

Evidence for TP-AGB stars in high redshift galaxies, and their effect on deriving stellar population parameters

We explore the effects of stellar population models on estimating star formation histories, ages and masses of high redshift galaxies. The focus is on the Thermally-Pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch (TP-AGB) phase of stellar evolution, whose treatment is a source of major discrepancy among different evolutionary population synthesis. In particular, besides the models usually adopted in the literature, we use models (by Maraston 2005), in which the contribution of the TP-AGB phase is observationally calibrated and is the dominant source of near-IR energy for stellar populations in the age range 0.2 to 2 Gyr. We use a sample of high-z galaxies in the HUDF, with spectroscopic redshifts, and Spitzer IRAC and MIPS photometry from GOODS. We find that the TP-AGB phase plays a key role in the interpretation of Spitzer data for high-z galaxies, when the rest-frame near-IR is sampled. When fitting without dust reddening, the models with the empirically-calibrated TP-AGB phase always reproduce better the observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Allowing for dust reddening improves the fits with literature models in some cases. In both cases, the results from Maraston models imply younger ages by factors up to 6 and lower stellar masses (by ~60 % on average). The observed strengths of the MgUV spectral feature compare better to the predicted ones in the case of the Maraston models, implying a better overall consistency of SED fitting. Finally, we find that photometric redshifts improve significantly using these models on the SEDs extending over the IRAC bands. This work provides the first direct evidence of TP-AGB stars in the primeval Universe.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, submitted to the Astrophysical Journa

Photo-fenton degradation of pentachlorophenol l: competition between additives and photolysis

[EN] In the present work, the photo-Fenton degradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP, 1 mg/L) has been studied under simulated and natural solar irradiation; moreover, the effect on the process efficiency of urban waste-derived soluble bio-based substances (SBO), structurally comparable to humic acids, has been investigated. Experiments showed a crucial role of PCP photolysis, present in the solar pilot plant and hindered by the Pyrex (R) filter present in the solar simulator. Indeed, the SBO screen negatively affects PCP degradation when working under natural solar light, where the photolysis of PCP is relevant. In contrast, in the absence of PCP photolysis, a significant improvement of the photo-Fenton process was observed when added to SBO. Furthermore, SBO were able to extend the application of the photo-Fenton process at circumneutral pH values, due to their ability to complex iron, avoiding its precipitation as oxides or hydroxides. This positive effect has been observed at higher concentration of Fe(II) (4 mg/L), whereas at 1 mg/L, the degradation rates of PCP were comparable in the presence and absence of SBO.This work was realized with the financial support of the academic interchange from the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Research and Innovation Staff Exchange project, funded by the European Commission H2020-MSCA-RISE-2014 within the framework of the research project Mat4treaT (Project number: 645551).Vergura, EP.; García-Ballesteros, S.; Vercher Pérez, RF.; Santos-Juanes Jordá, L.; Bianco Prevot, A.; Arqués Sanz, A. Monteggia fracture associated with ipsilateral intercondylar distal humeral fracture with posterior interosseous nerve palsy: case report, medico-legal implications, and methodological assessment analysis

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: The Monteggia fracture, defined as a fracture of the proximal third of the ulnar shaft associated with an anterior or posterior dislocation of the proximal radial epiphysis, is a serious injury accounting for 0.7% of all elbow fractures and dislocations in adults. For adult patients, good results can only be obtained through early diagnosis and adequate surgical treatment. Monteggia fracture-dislocations associated with distal humeral fracture are extremely rare injuries in adults and there are few cases described in the literature. Medico-legal implications arising from such conditions have a host of complexities that cannot be discounted.CASE REPORT: This case report revolves around a patient affected by a type I Monteggia fracture-dislocation, according to the Bado classification, associated with an ipsilateral intercondylar distal humeral fracture. To our knowledge, this combination of lesions has never been reported before in adult patients. A positive result was obtained due to early diagnosis, achievement of anatomical reduction, and optimal stabilization with internal fixation which made it possible to achieve early functional recovery.CONCLUSIONS: Monteggia fracture -dislocations associated with ipsilateral intercondylar distal humeral fracture are extremely rare in adults. In the case herein reported, a favorable outcome was obtained due to early diagnosis, achievement of anatomical reduction and management with internal fixation with plate and screws, as well as early functional training. Misdiagnosis makes such lesions risky in terms of potentially delayed treatment, increasing the need for surgical interventions and the possibility of high-risk complications and disabling sequelae, with possible medico -legal implications. In the case of unrecognized injuries under urgent circumstances, the injuries may become chronic, making the treatment more complex. The ultimate outcomes of a misdiagnosed Monteggia lesion can lead to very serious functional and aesthetic damage

Volatile Organic Compounds in the Po Basin. Part B: Biogenic VOCs

Measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were performed in the Po Basin, northern Italy in early summer 1998, summer 2002, and autumn 2003. During the three campaigns, trace gases and meteorological parameters were measured at a semi-rural station, around 35 km north of the city center of Milan. Bimodal diurnal cycles of isoprene with highest concentrations in the morning and evening were found and could be explained by the interaction of emissions, chemical reactions, and vertical mixing. The diurnal cycle could be qualitatively reproduced by a three-dimensional Eulerian model. The nighttime decay of isoprene could be attributed mostly to reactions with NO3, while the decay of the isoprene oxidation products could not be explained with the considered chemical reactions. Methanol reached very high mixing ratios, up to 150 ppb. High concentrations with considerable variability occurred during nights with high relative humidities and low wind speeds. The origin of these nighttime methanol concentrations is most likely local and biogenic but the specific source could not be identifie
