The effects of sildenafil ciltrate on the lateral geniculate body of adult Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus)- A histological study
The histological effect of oral administration of sildenafil citrate (Viagra), commonly used as an aphrodisiac and for the treatment of erectile dysfunction on one of the visual relay centres namely the lateral geniculate body (LGB) of adult Wistar rat was carefully studied. The rats of both sexes (n=24), average weight of 202g were randomly assigned into three treatment (n=18) and control (n=6) groups. The rats in the treatment groups ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ received respectively, 0.25mg/kg, 0.70mg/kg and 1.43mg/kg body weight of sildenafil citrate base dissolved in distilled water daily for 30 days, through orogastric feeding tube, while that of the control group D, received equal volume of distilled water daily during the period of the experiment. The rats were fed with growers’ mash obtained from Edo Feeds and Flour Mill Ltd, Ewu, Edo State, Nigeria and were given water liberally. The rats were sacrificed on day thirty-one of the experiment. The lateral geniculate body (LGB) was carefully dissected out and quickly fixed in 10% formal saline for histological studies. The histological findings after H&E method indicated that the treated section of the lateral geniculate body (LGB) showed some varying degree of reduced cellular population based on its sparse distribution, degenerative changes, cellular hypertrophy, and intercellular vacuolations appearing in the stroma. Varying dosage and long administration of sildenafil citrate may have some deleterious effects on the neurons of the intracranial visual relay centre and this may probably have some adverse effects on visual sensibilities by its deleterious effects on the cells of the lateral geniculate body (LGB) of adult Wistar rats. It is therefore recommended that further studies aimed at corroborating these observations be carried out
Partial Synchronization on Complex Networks
Network topology plays an important role in governing the collective
dynamics. Partial synchronization (PaS) on regular networks with a few
non-local links is explored. Different PaS patterns out of the symmetry
breaking are observed for different ways of non-local couplings. The criterion
for the emergence of PaS is studied. The emergence of PaS is related to the
loss of degeneration in Lyapunov exponent spectrum. Theoretical and numerical
analysis indicate that non-local coupling may drastically change the dynamical
feature of the network, emphasizing the important topological dependence of
collective dynamics on complex networks.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Quantum Computers and Decoherence: Exorcising the Demon from the Machine
Decoherence is the main obstacle to the realization of quantum computers.
Until recently it was thought that quantum error correcting codes are the only
complete solution to the decoherence problem. Here we present an alternative
that is based on a combination of a decoherence-free subspace encoding and the
application of strong and fast pulses: ``encoded recoupling and decoupling''
(ERD). This alternative has the advantage of lower encoding overhead (as few as
two physical qubits per logical qubit suffice), and direct application to a
number of promising proposals for the experimental realization of quantum
computers.Comment: 15 pages, no figures. Invited contribution to the proceedings of the
SPIE Conference on Fluctuations and Noise. Section 8 contains a new result:
how to eliminate off-resonant transitions induced by generic "bang-bang"
pulses, by using a special type of "bang-bang" pulse

Changes in the quality of life in severely disabled people following provision of powered indoor/outdoor chairs
Purpose:To determine the benefits for patients who received an Electric Powered Indoor/outdoor Chair (EPIOC) and to quantify their perceived changes to their quality of life.
Method: Community-based cohort study of all patients provided with an EPIOC over 4 months; and followed up about 3 months later in a community served by a regional wheelchair service in North West London (population about 3.1 million) using the EuroQol EQ-5D with visual analogue scales for each of the 5 dimensions of the EQ-5D.
Results: Sixty-four wheelchair users were assessed initially and 51 completed follow up. Chair users showed no significant improvement in health state as measured by the EQ-5D after EPIOC provision. The visual analogue scales (VASs) indicated that, although perceived overall health state, independence and social life did not appear to improve, the dimensions of mobility, quality of life and pain/discomfort improved significantly on provision of an EPIOC.
Conclusion: EPIOC users reported significant improvements in several important aspects of their lives; not just in mobility (as expected) but also in reduction of pain and discomfort. The use of VASs provided a more holistic set of outcome measures that demonstrate quality of life benefits beyond that of health state alone
Tunneling of a Quantized Vortex: Roles of Pinning and Dissipation
We have performed a theoretical study of the effects of pinning potential and
dissipation on vortex tunneling in superconductors. Analytical results are
obtained in various limits relevant to experiment. In general we have found
that pinning and dissipation tend to suppress the effect of the vortex velocity
dependent part of the Magnus force on vortex tunneling.Comment: Latex, 12 page
