Scattering quantum random-walk search with errors
We analyze the realization of a quantum-walk search algorithm in a passive,
linear optical network. The specific model enables us to consider the effect of
realistic sources of noise and losses on the search efficiency. Photon loss
uniform in all directions is shown to lead to the rescaling of search time.
Deviation from directional uniformity leads to the enhancement of the search
efficiency compared to uniform loss with the same average. In certain cases
even increasing loss in some of the directions can improve search efficiency.
We show that while we approach the classical limit of the general search
algorithm by introducing random phase fluctuations, its utility for searching
is lost. Using numerical methods, we found that for static phase errors the
averaged search efficiency displays a damped oscillatory behaviour that

Rapid convergence of time-averaged frequency in phase synchronized systems
Numerical and experimental evidence is presented to show that many phase
synchronized systems of non-identical chaotic oscillators, where the chaotic
state is reached through a period-doubling cascade, show rapid convergence of
the time-averaged frequency. The speed of convergence toward the natural
frequency scales as the inverse of the measurement period. The results also
suggest an explanation for why such chaotic oscillators can be phase

Eco-efficient processes for biodiesel production from waste lipids
The paper proposes innovative eco-efficient processes for converting waste lipid feedstock with up to 35% free fatty acids into biodiesel. Free fatty acids pre-treatment is a key issue, which can be handled by esterification with methanol or glycerol, using hetero- or homogeneous catalyst. The integration with the transesterification stage is possible using methods based on process intensification and heterogeneous catalysis. Three integrated continuous processes are investigated. The first performs the esterification with methanol by reactive absorption and superacid solid catalyst, followed by transesterification by reactive distillation with alkali catalyst. The second method applies the esterification with glycerol at high temperature, coupled with transesterification by heterogeneous catalyst in a variable residence-time plug-flow reactor. The third alternative replaces the second reaction stage with vacuum distillation. In all cases, biodiesel fulfills the specifications of D6751 and EN14214 norms. This result is obtained by kinetic simulation of reactors including free fatty acids esterification and glycerides transesterification. A techno-economic analysis pinpoints the pros and cons of each process. The first process is suited for low free fatty acids content, as used cooking oils. The second and third processes can be applied for higher content of free fatty acids, such as animal fats and greases. Particularly the third process can deliver biodiesel of highest quality, conforming to the cold soak filtration test
Emergence of patterns in driven and in autonomous spatiotemporal systems
The relationship between a driven extended system and an autonomous
spatiotemporal system is investigated in the context of coupled map lattice
models. Specifically, a locally coupled map lattice subjected to an external
drive is compared to a coupled map system with similar local couplings plus a
global interaction. It is shown that, under some conditions, the emergent
patterns in both systems are analogous. Based on the knowledge of the dynamical
responses of the driven lattice, we present a method that allows the prediction
of parameter values for the emergence of ordered spatiotemporal patterns in a
class of coupled map systems having local coupling and general forms of global

Investigation of alpha-nuclear potential families from elastic scattering experiments
In this work we present the continuation of the reported analysis [1] of the experimentally measured angular distributions of the reaction Cd-106(alpha, alpha)Cd-106 at several different energies around the Coulomb barrier. The difficulties that arise in the study of Cd-106-alpha-nuclear potential and the so called Family Problem are addressed
ALMA observations of the molecular gas in the debris disk of the 30 Myr old star HD 21997
The 30 Myr old A3-type star HD 21997 is one of the two known debris dust
disks having a measurable amount of cold molecular gas. With the goal of
understanding the physical state, origin, and evolution of the gas in young
debris disks, we obtained CO line observations with the Atacama Large
Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Here we report on the detection of 12CO
and 13CO in the J=2-1 and J=3-2 transitions and C18O in the J=2-1 line. The gas
exhibits a Keplerian velocity curve, one of the few direct measurements of
Keplerian rotation in young debris disks. The measured CO brightness
distribution could be reproduced by a simple star+disk system, whose parameters
are r_in < 26 AU, r_out = 138 +/- 20 AU, M_*=1.8 +0.5 -0.2 M_Sun, and i = 32.6
+/- 3.1 degrees. The total CO mass, as calculated from the optically thin C18O
line, is about (4-8) x 10^-2 M_Earth, while the CO line ratios suggest a
radiation temperature on the order of 6-9 K. Comparing our results with those
obtained for the dust component of the HD 21997 disk from the ALMA continuum
observations by Mo\'or et al., we conclude that comparable amounts of CO gas
and dust are present in the disk. Interestingly, the gas and dust in the HD
21997 system are not co-located, indicating a dust-free inner gas disk within
55 AU of the star. We explore two possible scenarios for the origin of the gas.
A secondary origin, which involves gas production from colliding or active
planetesimals, would require unreasonably high gas production rates and would
not explain why the gas and dust are not co-located. We propose that HD 21997
is a hybrid system where secondary debris dust and primordial gas coexist. HD
21997, whose age exceeds both the model predictions for disk clearing and the
ages of the oldest T Tauri-like or transitional gas disks in the literature,
may be a key object linking the primordial and the debris phases of disk

Physical Properties of OSIRIS-REx Target Asteroid (101955) 1999 RQ36 derived from Herschel, ESO-VISIR and Spitzer observations
In September 2011, the Herschel Space Observatory performed an observation
campaign with the PACS photometer observing the asteroid (101955) 1999 RQ36 in
the far infrared. The Herschel observations were analysed, together with ESO
VLT-VISIR and Spitzer-IRS data, by means of a thermophysical model in order to
derive the physical properties of 1999 RQ36. We find the asteroid has an
effective diameter in the range 480 to 511 m, a slightly elongated shape with a
semi-major axis ratio of a/b=1.04, a geometric albedo of 0.045 +0.015/-0.012,
and a retrograde rotation with a spin vector between -70 and -90 deg ecliptic
latitude. The thermal emission at wavelengths below 12 micron -originating in
the hot sub-solar region- shows that there may be large variations in roughness
on the surface along the equatorial zone of 1999 RQ36, but further measurements
are required for final proof. We determine that the asteroid has a
disk-averaged thermal inertia of Gamma = 650 Jm-2s-0.5K-1 with a 3-sigma
confidence range of 350 to 950 Jm-2s-0.5K-1, equivalent to what is observed for
25143 Itokawa and suggestive that 1999 RQ36 has a similar surface texture and
may also be a rubble-pile in nature. The low albedo indicates that 1999 RQ36
very likely contains primitive volatile-rich material, consistent with its
spectral type, and that it is an ideal target for the OSIRIS-REx sample return

The first high-amplitude delta Scuti star in an eclipsing binary system
We report the discovery of the first high-amplitude delta Scuti star in an
eclipsing binary, which we have designated UNSW-V-500. The system is an
Algol-type semi-detached eclipsing binary of maximum brightness V = 12.52 mag.
A best-fitting solution to the binary light curve and two radial velocity
curves is derived using the Wilson-Devinney code. We identify a late A spectral
type primary component of mass 1.49+/-0.02 M_sun and a late K spectral type
secondary of mass 0.33+/-0.02 M_sun, with an inclination of 86.5+/-1.0 degrees,
and a period of 5.3504751+/-0.0000006 d. A Fourier analysis of the residuals
from this solution is performed using PERIOD04 to investigate the delta Scuti
pulsations. We detect a single pulsation frequency of f_1 = 13.621+/-0.015 c/d,
and it appears this is the first overtone radial mode frequency. This system
provides the first opportunity to measure the dynamical mass for a star of this
variable type; previously, masses have been derived from stellar evolution and
