Graphene as Transparent Electrode for Direct Observation of Hole Photoemission from Silicon to Oxide
The outstanding electrical and optical properties of graphene make it an
excellent alternative as a transparent electrode. Here we demonstrate the
application of graphene as collector material in internal photoemission (IPE)
spectroscopy; enabling the direct observation of both electron and hole
injections at a Si/Al2O3 interface and successfully overcoming the
long-standing difficulty of detecting holes injected from a semiconductor
emitter in IPE measurements. The observed electron and hole barrier heights are
3.5 eV and 4.1 eV, respectively. Thus the bandgap of Al2O3 can be further
deduced to be 6.5 eV, in close agreement with the valued obtained by vacuum
ultraviolet spectroscopic ellipsometry analysis. The detailed optical modeling
of a graphene/Al2O3/Si stack reveals that by using graphene in IPE measurements
the carrier injection from the emitter is significantly enhanced and the
contribution of carrier injection from the collector electrode is minimal. The
method can be readily extended to various IPE test structures for a complete
band alignment analysis and interface characterization.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
Survey of equine veterinarians regarding primary equine back pain in the United States
Back pain is a common complaint, clinical finding and performance limiting factor in sport horses. This study sought to gather current veterinary trends in the diagnosis, treatment and management of primary equine back pain in the United States. A 22 question survey was distributed electronically to equine practitioners through AAEP and ACVSMR listservs and through closed social media groups. The survey was open from April 20, 2022 to July 5, 2022. Responses were analyzed using Microsoft excel pivot tables. Ninety-seven survey responses were obtained and analyzed. Respondents reported the clinical signs most frequently relayed to them by the owner/rider/trainer of horses diagnosed with primary back pain were behavioral issues and poor performance. Most common diagnostic tests reported were radiography of the spinous processes, thoraco-lumbar vertebral bodies, and transcutaneous ultrasound of the thoraco-lumbar region. Most common pathologies reported were impinging dorsal spinous processes, degenerative sacro-iliac joint disease, and osteoarthritis in lumbar or thoracic articular process joints. In regards to impinging spinous process (“kissing spine”) treatments, 72.2% of respondents recommended surgery only after non-surgical treatments failed, and 14.6% of respondents never recommended surgery. The majority (82%) of respondents reported some level of improvement in clinical signs of primary back pain with rehabilitation alone. To date, there has been no consensus or discussion about common abnormalities, diagnostic tests, treatments or management options for primary equine back pain in the United States. Results of this survey are a starting point showing current trends in diagnosis, treatment and management of primary equine back pain among equine practitioners in the United States showing 82% of practitioners using rehabilitation as a component of treatment
Analyzing capacitance-voltage measurements of vertical wrapped-gated nanowires
The capacitance of arrays of vertical wrapped-gate InAs nanowires are
analyzed. With the help of a Poisson-Schr"odinger solver, information about the
doping density can be obtained directly. Further features in the measured
capacitance-voltage characteristics can be attributed to the presence of
surface states as well as the coexistence of electrons and holes in the wire.
For both scenarios, quantitative estimates are provided. It is furthermore
shown that the difference between the actual capacitance and the geometrical
limit is quite large, and depends strongly on the nanowire material.Comment: 15 pages, 6 Figures included, to appear in Nanotechnolog

Mass Balance Results for Pricetown I Underground Coal Gasification
A mass balance model was applied to the Pricetown I test data. This model gave the values of various parameters such as water influx, percent devolatilization, percent gasification, amount of coal affected, thermal efficiency, etc., for the various phases of the test. Both hourly and daily values of the test data were used. At certain times, there was air loss to the coal seam or air gain from the coal seam as related to the underground reactor. Mass balances are modified accordingly. Realistic pyrolysis temperatures have been chosen for the different phases of the test based on the thermocouple responses. The nitrogen and argon balances gave similar results. The mass balance results showed that approximately 702 tons of coal was affected during the test. Approximately 232 tons of coal was completely gasified. The reverse combustion linkage through the virgin coal seam was dominated by the devolatilization and accounted for approximately 80% devoltilization whereas the same accounted for only 26% devolatilization during the gasification phase. During the enhanced linkage phase, the percent devolatilization ranged between that observed for the RCL and gasification phase. There was net influx of water and amounted to 0.59 barrels per ton of coal affected. The percent energy recovery for the gasification phase was 72% based on gas chromatographic data, and accounting the sensible heat of the gas and the latent heat of the water vapor in the gas

Application of the Controllable Unit Approach (CUA) to analyzing safeguards measurement systems
CUA is a material control and accountability methodology that takes into account the system logic and statistical characteristics of a plant process through the formulation of closure equations. The study evaluated CUA methodology to meet performance oriented regulations. The criterion is defined as the detection of a material loss of two kilograms of SNM with 97.5% confidence. Specifically investigated were the timeliness of detection, the ability to localize material loss, process coverage, cost/benefits, and compatibility with other safeguards techniques such as diversion path analysis and data filtering. The feasibility of performance-oriented regulations is demonstrated. To fully use the system of closure equations, a procedure was developed to formally integrate the effect of both short-term and long-term closure equations into an overall systems criterion of performance. Both single and multiple diversion strategies are examined in order to show how the CUA method can protect against either strategy. Quantitative results show that combined closure equations improve the detection sensitivity to material loss, and that multiple diversions provide only diminishing returns
