Countries Response for People With Disabilities During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Background and ObjectivesDuring the Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic, isolation and prevention measures to reduce COVID-19 contagions are essential for the care of all people; these measures should comply with the principles of inclusion and accessibility for people with disabilities (PWD), with all kinds of deficiencies and levels of dependency. Thereby, the aim of this article is to present the measures adopted for PWD or people with rehabilitation needs, for containment, mitigation, or suppression of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in different countries of all continents and of all income levels.MethodsA narrative approach was used in this article. First, a broad search was carried out in the 193 member states of the UN, and then 98 countries that issued any document, report, or information related to disability and COVID-19 were selected. Finally, 32 countries were included in this article because they presented official information. We considered official sources, the information available in the government, or on the health ministry page of the country. In this way, the countries that presented information which did not correspond to an official source were excluded. The search was conducted in August 2020 and updated in March 2021.ResultsFirst, the non-pharmacological general interventions for PWD included informative measures and general recommendations during the stay at home, isolation, and biosecurity measures, contagion prevention, detection of positive cases, mobilization measures, and measures implemented in institutions or residences of PWD. Second, we identified the economic and social benefits provided to PWD during the pandemic. Finally, we identified the measures taken by countries according to the type of impairment (visual, hearing, physical, mental, and cardiopulmonary impairment) during the COVID-19 pandemic.ConclusionIn response to the COVID-19 pandemic, only 50% of countries from the five world regions created and implemented specific measures for PWD to containment, mitigation, or suppression of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. There is very little specific information available about the measures to continue with the care of people with rehabilitation needs and the long-term follow-up of PWD, and for the prevention and response to violence, especially for women with disabilities
More Stable Productivity of Semi Natural Grasslands than Sown Pastures in a Seasonally Dry Climate
In the Neotropics the predominant pathway to intensify productivity is generally thought to be to convert grasslands to sown pastures, mostly in monoculture. This article examines how above-ground net primary productivity (ANPP) in semi-natural grasslands and sown pastures in Central America respond to rainfall by: (i) assessing the relationships between ANPP and accumulated rainfall and indices of rainfall distribution, (ii) evaluating the variability of ANPP between and within seasons, and (iii) estimating the temporal stability of ANPP. We conducted sequential biomass harvests during 12 periods of 22 days and related those to rainfall. There were significant relationships between ANPP and cumulative rainfall in 22-day periods for both vegetation types and a model including a linear and quadratic term explained 74% of the variation in the data. There was also a significant correlation between ANPP and the number of rainfall events for both vegetation types. Sown pastures had higher ANPP increments per unit rainfall and higher ANPP at the peak of the rainy season than semi-natural grasslands. In contrast, semi-natural grasslands showed higher ANPP early in the dry season. The temporal stability of ANPP was higher in semi-natural grasslands than in the sown pastures in the dry season and over a whole annual cycle. Our results reveal that, contrary to conventional thinking amongst pasture scientists, there appears to be no increase in ANPP arising from replacing semi-natural grasslands with sown pastures under prevailing pasture management practices in seasonally dry climates, while the temporal distribution of ANPP is more even in semi-natural grasslands. Neither sown pastures nor semi-natural grasslands are productive towards the end of the dry season, indicating the potential importance of the widespread practice of retaining tree cover in pastures

Results from Colombia's 2016 report card on physical activity for children and youth
Background: Physical activity (PA) is vital to the holistic development of young people. Regular participation in PA is associated with substantial benefits for health, cognitive function, and social inclusion. Recognizing the potential of PA in the context of the current peace process in Colombia, the purpose of this article is to present the methodology and results of Colombia's second Report Card on PA for children and youth. Methods: A group of experts on PA graded 14 PA indicators based on data from national surveys and policy documents. Results: National and departmental policy indicators received a grade of B, while organized sport participation, overweight, obesity, community influence, and nongovernment initiatives indicators received a grade of C. Overall PA levels, active transportation, sedentary behaviors, and school influence received a grade of D. Active play, low physical fitness, and family influence received an Incomplete grade. Conclusion: PA levels are low and sedentary behaviors are high in Colombian children and youth, with notable geographic differences. A broad policy framework translated into specific actions could provide unique opportunities to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice, and contribute to social integration goals in a postconflict setting. © 2016 Human Kinetics, Inc

Time Course of Mechanical Ventilation Driving Pressure Levels in Pediatric Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: Outcomes in a Prospective, Multicenter Cohort Study from Colombia, 2018-2022
OBJECTIVES: High driving pressure (DP, ratio of tidal volume (Vt) over respiratory system compliance) is a risk for poor outcomes in patients with pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS). We therefore assessed the time course in level of DP (i.e., 24, 48, and 72 hr) after starting mechanical ventilation (MV), and its association with 28-day mortality. DESIGN: Multicenter, prospective study conducted between February 2018 and December 2022. SETTING: Twelve tertiary care PICUs in Colombia. PATIENTS: One hundred eighty-four intubated children with moderate to severe PARDS. INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The median (interquartile range [IQR]) age of the PARDS cohort was 11 (IQR 3-24) months. A total of 129 of 184 patients (70.2%) had a pulmonary etiology leading to PARDS, and 31 of 184 patients (16.8%) died. In the first 24 hours after admission, the plateau pressure in the nonsurvivor group, compared with the survivor group, differed (28.24 [IQR 24.14-32.11] vs. 23.18 [IQR 20.72-27.13] cm H2O, p < 0.01). Of note, children with a Vt less than 8 mL/kg of ideal body weight had lower adjusted odds ratio (aOR [95% CI]) of 28-day mortality (aOR 0.69, [95% CI, 0.55-0.87]; p = 0.02). However, we failed to identify an association between DP level and the oxygenation index (aOR 0.58; 95% CI, 0.21-1.58) at each of time point. In a diagnostic exploratory analysis, we found that DP greater than 15 cm H2O at 72 hours was an explanatory variable for mortality, with area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.83 (95% CI, 0.74-0.89); there was also increased hazard for death with hazard ratio 2.5 (95% CI, 1.07-5.92). DP greater than 15 cm H2O at 72 hours was also associated with longer duration of MV (10 [IQR 7-14] vs. 7 [IQR 5-10] d; p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: In children with moderate to severe PARDS, a DP greater than 15 cm H2O at 72 hours after the initiation of MV is associated with greater odds of 28-day mortality and a longer duration of MV. DP should be considered a variable worth monitoring during protective ventilation for PARDS. © 2024 by the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the World Federation of Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care Societies

Selection and characterization of Argentine isolates of Trichoderma harzianum for effective biocontrol of Septoria leaf blotch of wheat
Species of the genus Trichoderma are economically important as biocontrol agents, serving as a potential alternative to chemical control. The applicability of Trichoderma isolates to different ecozones will depend on the behavior of the strains selected from each zone. The present study was undertaken to isolate biocontrol populations of Trichoderma spp. from the Argentine wheat regions and to select and characterize the best strains of Trichoderma harzianum by means of molecular techniques. A total of 84 out of the 240 strains of Trichoderma were able to reduce the disease severity of the leaf blotch of wheat. Thirty-seven strains were selected for the reduction equal to or greater than 50Â % of the severity, compared with the control. The percentage values of reduction of the pycnidial coverage ranged between 45 and 80Â %. The same last strains were confirmed as T. harzianum by polymerase chain reaction amplification of internal transcribed spacers, followed by sequencing. Inter-simple sequence repeat was used to examine the genetic variability among isolates. This resulted in a total of 132 bands. Further numerical analysis revealed 19 haplotypes, grouped in three clusters (I, II, III). Shared strains, with different geographical origins and isolated in different years, were observed within each cluster. The origin of the isolates and the genetic group were partially related. All isolates from Parana were in cluster I, all isolates from Loberia were in cluster II, and all isolates from Pergamino and Santa Fe were in cluster III. Our results suggest that the 37 native strains of T. harzianum are important in biocontrol programs and could be advantageous for the preparation of biopesticides adapted to the agroecological conditions of wheat culture.Centro de Investigaciones en FitopatologĂ
