Bit-error-rate testing of fiber optic data links for MMIC-based phased array antennas
The measured bit-error-rate (BER) performance of a fiber optic data link to be used in satellite communications systems is presented and discussed. In the testing, the link was measured for its ability to carry high burst rate, serial-minimum shift keyed (SMSK) digital data similar to those used in actual space communications systems. The fiber optic data link, as part of a dual-segment injection-locked RF fiber optic link system, offers a means to distribute these signals to the many radiating elements of a phased array antenna. Test procedures, experimental arrangements, and test results are presented
Charging infrastructure for commercial electric vehicles: Challenges and future works
The journey towards transportation electrification started with small electric vehicles (i.e., electric cars), which have enjoyed an increasing level of global interest in recent years. Electrification of commercial vehicles (e.g., trucks) seems to be a natural progression of this journey, and many commercial vehicle manufacturers have shifted their focus on medium- and heavy-duty vehicle electrification over the last few years. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review and analysis of the existing works presented in the literature on commercial vehicle charging. The paper starts with a brief discussion on the significance of commercial vehicle electrification, especially heavy- and medium-duty vehicles. The paper then reviews two major charging strategies for commercial vehicles, namely the return-to-base model and the on route charging model. Research challenges related to the return-to-base model are then analysed in detail. Next, different methods to charge commercial vehicles on route during their driving cycles are summarized. The paper then analyzes the challenging issues related to charging commercial vehicles at public charging stations. Future works relevant to these challenges are highlighted. Finally, the possibility of accommodating vehicle to grid technology for commercial vehicles is discussed

A charging strategy for large commercial electric vehicle fleets
The popularity of Commercial Electric Vehicles (CEVs) has experienced a surge in recent years, particularly in urban vocational contexts, as a means of advancing towards the goal of attaining net-zero emissions by 2050. The return-to-base charging strategy, which involves charging CEVs at depots, has become a prevalent practice for smaller CEV fleets. Nevertheless, for larger CEV fleets, the limited charging capacity at depots presents a significant challenge, leading to a reliance on both limited depot charging infrastructure and public charging infrastructure. This reliance can have a substantial impact on both the operational costs and the sustainability of logistics services. To address these challenges, this study proposes a new charging strategy for managing the charging of large CEV fleets. The proposed strategy coordinates the charging of CEVs at depots and public charging stations. The strategy is formulated as a constraint optimization problem and takes into consideration operational schedules, demand charges, and the characteristics of public charging stations. The results of this study demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in optimizing CEV charging at different stations, preserving the continuity of logistics services, and reducing total travel costs by 30% compared to existing solutions. This study offers a solution to the challenges faced by large CEV fleets in their efforts to achieve cost-effective and sustainable charging solutions
Optimal sizing design and operation of electrical and thermal energy storage systems in smart buildings
Photovoltaic (PV) systems in residential buildings require energy storage to enhance their productivity; however, in present technology, battery storage systems (BSSs) are not the most cost-effective solutions. Comparatively, thermal storage systems (TSSs) can provide opportunities to enhance PV self-consumption while reducing life cycle costs. This paper proposes a new framework for optimal sizing design and real-time operation of energy storage systems in a residential building equipped with a PV system, heat pump (HP), thermal and electrical energy storage systems. For simultaneous optimal sizing of BSS and TSS, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is applied to minimize daily electricity and life cycle costs of the smart building. A model predictive controller is then developed to manage energy flow of storage systems to minimize electricity costs for end-users. The main objective of the controller is to optimally control HP operation and battery charge/discharge actions based on a demand response program. The controller regulates the flow of water in the storage tank to meet designated thermal energy requirements by controlling HP operation. Furthermore, the power flow of battery is controlled to supply all loads during peak-load hours to minimize electricity costs. The results of this paper demonstrate to rooftop PV system owners that investment in combined TSS and BSS can be more profitable as this system can minimize life cycle costs. The proposed methods for optimal sizing and operation of electrical and thermal storage system can reduce the annual electricity cost by more than 80% with over 42% reduction in the life cycle cost. Simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework and controller
W-4 PHASE AND FREQUENCY COHERENCY OF MULTIPLE OPTICALLY SYNCHRONIZED 20GHZ FET OSCILLATORS FOR SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS
ABSTRACT Future generation of communication satellites are based on large aperture phased array antennas, which are composed of many active transmit/receive modules. The phase and frequency coherency of these modules are of concern. A viable technique to provide phase and frequency references for synchronization is through fiber-optic distribution and using indirect subharmonic optical injection locking techniques. Experimental results of phase and frequency coherency of two 20GHz FET oscillators are reported in this paper. Optimum performance was achieved at subharmonic factor of 1/4 with locking range of 84MHz ancl phase noise degradation of only 14 dB. Initial phase coherency measurements of two injection locked oscillators indicate that a phase error can be introduced due to the detuning between the slave and master oscillator signals. A scheme to correct for this phase error is also presented
Molecular detection of prostate specific antigen in patients with prostate cancer or benign prostate hyperplasia the first investigation from Iran
Prostate cancer is the second common form of cancer in men. Detection of circulating Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) transcripts has effectively been used for early diagnosis of prostate cancer cells. This investigation employed a reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique to distinguish the patients with either localized or metastatic prostate cancer (CaP) vs. Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) and control subjects, as compared with clinical and pathological records. With reservation of ethical issues, blood samples were collected from 60 cases. Based on pathological and clinical findings, 25 patients (20 with localized cancer, 5 with metastatic), 22 with BPH, and 13 healthy (including 3 females) subjects as negative controls, were selected from Shariati, Mehrad, Sina,, Khatam and Atie Hospitals in Tehran, Iran. RT-PCR for a 260 bp PSA transcript was then performed. Clinical and pathological records were used for the assessment and comparison of PSA RT-PCR results. None of the control subjects and BPH (with 7 exceptions) were found positive by RT-PCR (Relative specificity= 72.7). In patients with prostate cancer, 21 out of 25 were found PSA positive (Relative sensitivity= 83.4) and the remaining 3 have been shown to be PSA negative (Positive predictive value= 83.4). All of 5 metastatic patients (100) revealed PSA positive results. Our data reflects the clinical relevance and significance of RT-PCR results as assessed with clinical and pathological examinations. PSA RT-PCR might be used as a powerful means for diagnosis, even when either pathological or clinical findings are negative, and could be employed for further molecular epidemiology surveys
Razvoj radiomarkiranog β-humanog koriogonadotropina
-human chorionic gonadotropin (-hCG) was successively labeled with [67Ga] gallium chloride after conjugation with freshly prepared diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid dianhydride (ccDTPA). After solid phase purification of the radiolabeled hormone, high performance liquid chromatography showed radiochemical purity higher than 95 % under optimized conditions (specific activity = 2223 TBq mM1, labeling efficiency 80 %). Preliminary in vivo studies (ID g1, %) in male wild-type rats showed marked gonadal uptake of the tracer after 240 minutes in agreement with the biodistribution studies and reported -hCG receptors. Target to blood ratios were 5.1 and 15.2 after 3 and 24 hours, respectively, while target to muscle ratios were 35 and 40 after 3 and 24 hours, respectively.
Exploring user experience and technology acceptance for a fall prevention system: results from a randomized clinical trial and a living lab
Background: Falls are common in older adults and can result in serious injuries. Due to demographic changes, falls and related healthcare costs are likely to increase over the next years. Participation and motivation of older adults in fall prevention measures remain a challenge. The iStoppFalls project developed an information and communication technology (ICT)-based system for older adults to use at home in order to reduce common fall risk factors such as impaired balance and muscle weakness. The system aims at increasing older adults’ motivation to participate in ICT-based fall prevention measures. This article reports on usability, user-experience and user-acceptance aspects affecting the use of the iStoppFalls system by older adults.
Methods: In the course of a 16-week international multicenter study, 153 community-dwelling older adults aged 65+ participated in the iStoppFalls randomized controlled trial, of which half used the system in their home to exercise and assess their risk of falling. During the study, 60 participants completed questionnaires regarding the usability, user experience and user acceptance of the iStoppFalls system. Usability was measured with the System Usability Scale (SUS). For user experience the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES) was applied. User acceptance was assessed with the Dynamic Acceptance Model for the Re-evaluation of Technologies (DART). To collect more detailed data on usability, user experience and user acceptance, additional qualitative interviews and observations were conducted with participants.
Results: Participants evaluated the usability of the system with an overall score of 62 (Standard Deviation, SD 15.58) out of 100, which suggests good usability. Most users enjoyed the iStoppFalls games and assessments, as shown by the overall PACES score of 31 (SD 8.03). With a score of 0.87 (SD 0.26), user acceptance results showed that participants accepted the iStoppFalls system for use in their own home. Interview data suggested that certain factors such as motivation, complexity or graphical design were different for gender and age.
Conclusions: The results suggest that the iStoppFalls system has good usability, user experience and user acceptance. It will be important to take these along with factors such as motivation, gender and age into consideration when designing and further developing ICT-based fall prevention systems
