    Magnetic properties of amorphous thin films produced by ion mixing

    We have produced several magnetic amorphous alloys by ion mixing of thin multilayer films. Our results show that the ion mixing technique is able to produce amorphous films of the various categories (transition metal-metalloid, transition metal pairs) at the composition appropriate for the appearance of magnetic ordering. A comparison of their saturation magnetization with that of related vapor quenched films suggests similar nearest-neighbor coordination in both kinds of samples

    Correlation between cohesive energy and mixing rate in ion mixing of metallic bilayers

    We have compared the mixing rate of several 5d-4d metal bilayers which form ideal solutions. We observe a strong correlation between the mixing rate and the average cohesive energy of each bilayer. A model based on the thermal spike concept is proposed to explain this behavior. The model leads to a general expression describing mixing rates in metallic bilayers

    Ouabain-induced cytoplasmic vesicles and their role in cell volume maintenance

    Cellular swelling is controlled by an active mechanism of cell volume regulation driven by a Na+/K+-dependent ATPase and by aquaporins which translocate water along the osmotic gradient. Na+/K+-pump may be blocked by ouabain, a digitalic derivative, by inhibition of ATP, or by drastic ion alterations of extracellular fluid. However, it has been observed that some tissues are still able to control their volume despite the presence of ouabain, suggesting the existence of other mechanisms of cell volume control. In 1977, by correlating electron microscopy observation with ion and water composition of liver slices incubated in differentmetabolic conditions in the presence or absence of ouabain, we observed that hepatocytes were able to control their volume extruding water and recovering ion composition in the presence of ouabain. In particular, hepatocytes were able to sequester ions and water in intracellular vesicles and then secrete themat the bile canaliculus pole.We named this “vesicularmechanismof cell volume control.” Afterward, thismechanism has been confirmed by us and other laboratories in several mammalian tissues.This review summarizes evidences regarding this mechanism, problems that are still pending, and questions that need to be answered. Finally, we shortly review the importance of cell volume control in some human pathological conditions

    An Interactive Multimedia Business Game

    The playing of computer-based business games has changed little with recent technological improvements. Teams make decisions which are written down on paper and handed to a tutor who then has to enter these into the computer. To make it a richer and more real-life experience we have brought a business simulation into a multimedia environment. In order to create a sense of the passing of time the simulation is continuous, and players can enter input values throughout the game. Important parameters, such as product sales, are displayed as continuously updated graphs. Background information such as news items is provided in multimedia form. Players also have direct access to online tools, such as spreadsheets, from the game environment. We describe the prototype built to illustrate our approach

    A New Type of Intensity Correlation in Random Media

    A monochromatic point source, embedded in a three-dimensional disordered medium, is considered. The resulting intensity pattern exhibits a new type of long-range correlations.     Comprehensive web-based broker for bio-technology design and manufacturing

    Synthetic biology, particularly in relation to characterisation experiments relating to the description of bio-parts frequently involves the use of a wide range of equipment, including, for example, plate reader's, flow cytometers, and mass spectrometers. This equipment is often from multiple manufacturers. The study describes broker technology that has been developed which has the ability to connect multiple types of equipment into a common information environment; the connectivity from the databases and equipment is achieved using Visbion's ‘cube’ technology that involves military specification encryption for data security. The broker technology uses a new, developing standard, Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM)-SB, that is based on the highly successful international standard for biomedicine, DICOM. The broker uses a version of the DICOM data model that has been specifically designed for synthetic biology and, in particular, characterisation data
