Order preserving pattern matching on trees and DAGs

The order preserving pattern matching (OPPM) problem is, given a pattern string pp and a text string tt, find all substrings of tt which have the same relative orders as pp. In this paper, we consider two variants of the OPPM problem where a set of text strings is given as a tree or a DAG. We show that the OPPM problem for a single pattern pp of length mm and a text tree TT of size NN can be solved in O(m+N)O(m+N) time if the characters of pp are drawn from an integer alphabet of polynomial size. The time complexity becomes O(mlogā”m+N)O(m \log m + N) if the pattern pp is over a general ordered alphabet. We then show that the OPPM problem for a single pattern and a text DAG is NP-complete

Purpose The aim of this study was to confirm the applicability of YouTube as a delivery platform of lecture videos for dental students and to assess their learning attitudes towards the flipped classroom model. Methods Learning experiences after using the YouTube platform to deliver preliminary video lectures in a flipped classroom were assessed by 69 second-year students (52 males, 17 females) at Dankook University College of Dentistry, Korea, who attended periodontology lectures during 2 consecutive semesters of the 2016 academic year. The instructor uploaded the lecture videos to YouTube before each class. At the end of the second semester, the students were surveyed using a questionnaire devised by the authors. Results Of the students, 53 (76.8%) always watched the lecture before the class, 48 (69.6%) used their smartphones, and 66 (95.7%) stated that they watched the lectures at home. The majority of the students replied that the video lectures were easier to understand than face to face lectures (82.6%) and that they would like to view the videos again after graduation (73.9%). Conclusion Our results indicate that YouTube is an applicable platform to deliver video lectures and to expose students to increased learning opportunities

Evaluation of a systematic career coaching program for medical students in Korea using the Career Readiness Inventory

Purpose The purpose of this study was to implement a systematic career coaching program for medical students and to evaluate its effectiveness. Methods First-year medical students of Konyang University College of Medicine took part in the FLEX Mentoring II: Career Coaching Program from September to December in 2016 and 2017. This program included 16 weekly sessions, comprising a total of 32 hours. The students took the Career Readiness Inventory before and after the program, as a pre- and post-test of the program. Data from 100 students were used (46 students in 2016, 54 students in 2017) for the evaluation. Results Medical studentsā€™ career readiness pre-test was rated as medium. In particular, many students were at a low level in terms of ā€˜support from colleagues and peersā€™ (53.0%), ā€˜career decisionā€™ (48.0%), and ā€˜efforts for job preparationā€™ (60.0%). After 16 sessions of a systematic career coaching program, their career readiness level showed a significant increase except for ā€˜career decisionā€™ (t= 4.242, P= 0.001) and ā€˜independenceā€™ (t= 0.731, P= 0.466), a sub-factor of ā€˜career maturity.ā€™ Conclusion The career readiness level of medical students was not sufficiently high. However, a semester of educational training in a systematic career coaching program helped the students to be better prepared for their career. In particular, the significant reduction in the ā€˜career decisionā€™ variable after the program can be interpreted as indicating that the students changed their behavior to explore and approach their career more seriously and carefully, which also underscores the need for the implementation of career coaching programs in medical schools

Effects of 4-Week Intervention with Ulmus macrocarpa

Ulmus macrocarpa extract has been shown to have immune-related effects in animals, but no studies have yet been performed in humans. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted to determine the effect of short-term administration of Ulmus macrocarpa Hance extract (UME) on immune function biomarkers and its safety in human subjects. Fifty-eight subjects were randomly assigned to a UME group or a placebo group. Subjects in the UME group were given 500ā€‰mg per day of UME orally for 4 weeks. Mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) of tumor necrotic factor-Ī± increased only in the UME group at 1 week (P=0.027). The MFI of interleukin-2 decreased less significantly in the UME group than in the placebo group at 1 week (P=0.028). However, unfortunately, at 4 weeks, no intergroup differences were detected in MFIs of cytokine. In conclusion, administration of UME for 1 week increased serum TNF-Ī± and sustains IL-2 in human, which suggests that UME increases Th1-related immune function in the short term in healthy people. However, additional studies are needed to confirm the results of this first-stage study and further trials are required to decide on optimal dosage and duration of administration. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02414412

A survey of medical students to assess their exposure to and knowledge of renal transplantation

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Within the field of renal transplantation there is a lack of qualified and trainee surgeons and a shortage of donated organs. Any steps to tackle these issues should, in part, be aimed at future doctors. METHODS: A questionnaire was distributed to final year students at a single medical school in the UK to assess their exposure to and knowledge of renal transplantation. RESULTS: Although 46% of responding students had examined a transplant recipient, only 14% had ever witnessed the surgery. Worryingly, 9% of students believed that xenotransplantation commonly occurs in the UK and 35% were unable to name a single drug that a recipient may need to take. CONCLUSIONS: This survey demonstrates a lack of exposure to, and knowledge of, the field of renal transplantation. Recommendations to address the problems with the recruitment of surgeons and donation of organs, by targeting medical students are made

    Ordinary Percolation with Discontinuous Transitions

Percolation on a one-dimensional lattice and fractals such as the Sierpinski gasket is typically considered to be trivial because they percolate only at full bond density. By dressing up such lattices with small-world bonds, a novel percolation transition with explosive cluster growth can emerge at a nontrivial critical point. There, the usual order parameter, describing the probability of any node to be part of the largest cluster, jumps instantly to a finite value. Here, we provide a simple example of this transition in form of a small-world network consisting of a one-dimensional lattice combined with a hierarchy of long-range bonds that reveals many features of the transition in a mathematically rigorous manner.Comment: RevTex, 5 pages, 4 eps-figs, and Mathematica Notebook as Supplement included.
