Single crystal growth from light, volatile, and reactive materials using lithium and calcium flux

    Get PDF
We present a method for the solution growth of single crystals from reactive Li and Ca melts and its application to the synthesis of several, representative compounds. Among these, single crystalline Li3N, Li2(Li{1-x}Tx)N with T = {Mn, Fe, Co}, LiCaN, Li2C2, LiRh, and LiIr from Li-rich flux as well as Ca2N, CaNi2, CaNi3, YbNi2, Y2Ni7, and LaNi5 from Ca-rich flux could be obtained. Special emphasize is given on the growth of nitrides using commercially available Li3N and Ca3N2 powders as the nitrogen source instead of N2 gas.Comment: 40 pages, 20 figures, reference list update

Production of electronics and photovoltaics using a reel-to-reel process

    Get PDF
Reel to reel manufacturing is a mature technology that involves the passing of a flexible substrate or web continuously through one or more processes. The web is typically much longer than it is wide, and the width in turn is much greater than its thickness. It is a continuous process that results in high output at a low unit cost when compared with other production methods. Historically this has included newspaper printing and textile manufacture, but more recent research is being conducted in developing printed electronics, such as solar cells (Organic Photo-Voltaic or OPV), and wearable tech and flexible screens (Polymer LEDs or PLEDs). These devices consist of up to five layers, with a separate printing or coating process needed for each. Greater accuracy is necessary than for traditional industries and advances are required in three areas: control of the web; measurement and registration of the printed web; and flexible semi-conductor materials. In this paper we present a new methodology to improve printing accuracy by combining an advanced metrology system with an innovative process design

Ethics @ email: Do new media require new ethics?

    Get PDF
As more and more day-to-day interaction in business and academia has begun to take place through electronic mail, probably every one of its users has experienced some breakdown. By now, we have come to expect occasional hardware failures, but the human ones still catch us by surprise. That message we dashed off with no ill intent is received with hard feelings. Or it is forwarded to someone we never meant should see it. Or, unbeknown to us, it is read by our boss. E-mail has raised a host of ethical questions about how we treat one another and how we work, but its very newness as a medium can make the answers more obscure

The Church as a moral communicator

    Get PDF
What role does the Church-as a communicator-play in shaping the moral imagination of society? The question itself poses further questions. What is the Church, as a communicator? How does the Church act as a communicator of morals? What should the Church do to shape morals? Briefly, I will argue that the Church functions as a moral communicator at several levels, that the Church works best as a moral communicator when the Church shapes the imagination, and that such shaping occurs when the Church is most honestly the Church at the local level

    Jesuit pray-ers

Some trepidation accompanies this account of prayer, for I have long held the Seminar on Jesuit Spirituality in high regard, perhaps too readily canonizing its members and their writings. We entered the Society at the same time, the Seminar and I; from the middle of my tertianship, the Seminar-like my fellow tertians in faith sharing-now asks an account of my prayer
