Modelling amino acid solubility in several aqueous alkanol solutions with the PC-SAFT EoS
Since their isolation in the 19th century the physical and chemical properties of amino acids became a very important studied subject, no only because of their value as basic elements in all forms of life but also for their industrial importance, particularly for food. On the Bures Volume of Separable Quantum States
We obtain two sided estimates for the Bures volume of an arbitrary subset of
the set of density matrices, in terms of the Hilbert-Schmidt volume
of that subset. For general subsets, our results are essentially optimal (for
large ). As applications, we derive in particular nontrivial lower and upper
bounds for the Bures volume of sets of separable states and for sets of states
with positive partial transpose.

Analysis of resveratrol as a lung cancer chemopreventive agent in A/J mice exposed to benzo[a]pyrene
Resveratrol inhibits benzo[a]pyrene–DNA adduct formation in human bronchial epithelial cells
Resveratrol ( trans-3,4’,5-trihydroxystilbene), a phytoalexin present in various plants and foods, has in several in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated cancer chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic potential. We investigated the in vitro effect of resveratrol on benzo[ a] pyrene ( B[ a] P)-induced DNA adducts in human bronchial epithelial cells. This was compared to the effect of resveratrol on the expression of the cytochrome P450 (CYP) genes CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 and the formation of B[ a] P metabolites. Exposure of BEAS-2B and BEP2D cells to B[ a] P and increasing concentrations of resveratrol resulted in a dose- and time-dependent inhibition of DNA adduct formation quantified by P-32-postlabelling. Supporting this result, resveratrol was shown to inhibit CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 gene expression, as measured by real-time reverse transcriptase - polymerase chain reaction. Also, a significant correlation was found between the number of DNA adducts and the mRNA levels of these genes. Using HPLC analysis, a concomitant decrease in the formation of B[ a]P-derived metabolic products was detected. In conclusion, these data lend support to a chemopreventive role of resveratrol in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-induced carcinogenesis
Interleukin-2 therapy in patients with HIV infection
BACKGROUND
Used in combination with antiretroviral therapy, subcutaneous recombinant interleukin-2 raises CD4+ cell counts more than does antiretroviral therapy alone. The clinical implication of these increases is not known.
METHODS
We conducted two trials: the Subcutaneous Recombinant, Human Interleukin-2 in HIV-Infected Patients with Low CD4+ Counts under Active Antiretroviral Therapy (SILCAAT) study and the Evaluation of Subcutaneous Proleukin in a Randomized International Trial (ESPRIT). In each, patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) who had CD4+ cell counts of either 50 to 299 per cubic millimeter (SILCAAT) or 300 or more per cubic millimeter (ESPRIT) were randomly assigned to receive interleukin-2 plus antiretroviral therapy or antiretroviral therapy alone. The interleukin-2 regimen consisted of cycles of 5 consecutive days each, administered at 8-week intervals. The SILCAAT study involved six cycles and a dose of 4.5 million IU of interleukin-2 twice daily; ESPRIT involved three cycles and a dose of 7.5 million IU twice daily. Additional cycles were recommended to maintain the CD4+ cell count above predefined target levels. The primary end point of both studies was opportunistic disease or death from any cause.
RESULTS
In the SILCAAT study, 1695 patients (849 receiving interleukin-2 plus antiretroviral therapy and 846 receiving antiretroviral therapy alone) who had a median CD4+ cell count of 202 cells per cubic millimeter were enrolled; in ESPRIT, 4111 patients (2071 receiving interleukin-2 plus antiretroviral therapy and 2040 receiving antiretroviral therapy alone) who had a median CD4+ cell count of 457 cells per cubic millimeter were enrolled. Over a median follow-up period of 7 to 8 years, the CD4+ cell count was higher in the interleukin-2 group than in the group receiving antiretroviral therapy alone--by 53 and 159 cells per cubic millimeter, on average, in the SILCAAT study and ESPRIT, respectively. Hazard ratios for opportunistic disease or death from any cause with interleukin-2 plus antiretroviral therapy (vs. antiretroviral therapy alone) were 0.91 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.70 to 1.18; P=0.47) in the SILCAAT study and 0.94 (95% CI, 0.75 to 1.16; P=0.55) in ESPRIT. The hazard ratios for death from any cause and for grade 4 clinical events were 1.06 (P=0.73) and 1.10 (P=0.35), respectively, in the SILCAAT study and 0.90 (P=0.42) and 1.23 (P=0.003), respectively, in ESPRIT.
CONCLUSIONS
Despite a substantial and sustained increase in the CD4+ cell count, as compared with antiretroviral therapy alone, interleukin-2 plus antiretroviral therapy yielded no clinical benefit in either study. (ClinicalTrials.gov numbers, NCT00004978 [ESPRIT] and NCT00013611 [SILCAAT study].
Cutavirus in cutaneous malignant melanoma
A novel human protoparvovirus related to human bufavirus and preliminarily named cutavirus has been discovered. We detected cutavirus in a sample of cutaneous malignant melanoma by using viral enrichment and high-throughput sequencing. The role of cutaviruses in cutaneous cancers remains to be investigated
Mass Spectrometric Mapping of the DNA Adductome as a Means to Study Genotoxin Exposure, Metabolism, and Effect.
Covalent binding of endo- or exogenous chemicals to DNA results in the formation of DNA adducts which are reflective of exposure of the human body to DNA-damaging molecules and their metabolic pathways. The study of DNA adduct types and levels in human tissue therefore offers an interesting tool in several fields of research, including toxicology and cancer epidemiology. Over the years, a range of techniques and methods have been developed to study the formation of endo- and exogenous DNA adducts. However, for the simultaneous detection, identification and quantification of both known and unknown DNA adducts, mass spectrometry (MS) is deemed to be the most promising technique. In this perspective, we focus on the analysis of multiple DNA adducts within a sample with the emphasis on untargeted analysis. The advantageous use of MS methodologies for DNA adductome mapping is discussed comprehensively with relevant field examples. In addition, several aspects of study design, sample pretreatment, and analysis are addressed as these factors significantly affect the reliability of DNA adductomics studies
Metagenomic analysis reveals previously undescribed bat coronavirus strains in Eswatini
We investigated the prevalence of coronaviruses in 44 bats from four families in northeastern Eswatini using high-throughput sequencing of fecal samples. We found evidence of coronaviruses in 18% of the bats. We recovered full or near-full-length genomes from two bat species: Chaerephon pumilus and Afronycteris nana, as well as additional coronavirus genome fragments from C. pumilus, Epomophorus wahlbergi, Mops condylurus, and Scotophilus dinganii. All bats from which we detected coronaviruses were captured leaving buildings or near human settlements, demonstrating the importance of continued surveillance of coronaviruses in bats to better understand the prevalence, diversity, and potential risks for spillover. The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship; a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Opportunities Worldwide grant; Innovation Fund Denmark; a Student Research Grant from Bat Conservation International; a University of Florida Biodiversity Institute Fellowship; the Zuckerman STEM Leadership Program and an NIH Grant.http://link.springer.com/journal/10393hj2022Mammal Research InstituteZoology and Entomolog
