Latin American consumption of major food groups: Results from the ELANS study
Background
The Latin American (LA) region is still facing an ongoing epidemiological transition and shows a complex public health scenario regarding non-communicable diseases (NCDs). A healthy diet and consumption of specific food groups may decrease the risk of NCDs, however there is a lack of dietary intake data in LA countries.
Objective
Provide updated data on the dietary intake of key science-based selected food groups related to NCDs risk in LA countries.
Design
ELANS (Latin American Study of Nutrition and Health) is a multicenter cross-sectional study assessing food consumption from an urban sample between15 to 65 years old from 8 LA countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela). Two 24-HR were obtained from 9, 218 individuals. The daily intake of 10 food groups related to NCDs risk (fruits; vegetables; legumes/beans; nuts and seeds; whole grains products; fish and seafood; yogurt; red meat; processed meats; sugar-sweetened beverages (ready-to-drink and homemade)) were assessed and compared to global recommendations. Results Only 7.2% of the overall sample reached WHO's recommendation for fruits and vegetables consumption (400 grams per day). Regarding the dietary patterns related to a reduced risk of NCDs, among the overall sample legumes and fruits were the food groups with closer intake to the recommendation, although much lower than expected (13.1% and 11.5%, respectively). Less than 3.5% of the sample met the optimal consumption level of vegetables, nuts, whole grains, fish and yogurt. Largest country-dependent differences in average daily consumption were found for legumes, nuts, fish, and yogurt. Mean consumption of SSB showed large differences between countries.
Conclusion
Diet intake quality is deficient for nutrient-dense food groups, suggesting a higher risk for NCDs in the urban LA region in upcoming decades. These data provide relevant and up-to-date information to take urgent public health actions to improve consumption of critically foods in order to prevent NCDs. Copyright
Introduction: Stroke affects around 15 million people per year, with 10%-15% occurring in individuals under 50 years old (stroke in young adults). The prevalence of different vascular risk factors and healthcare strategies for stroke management vary worldwide, making the epidemiology and specific characteristics of stroke in each region an important area of research. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of different vascular risk factors and the aetiology and characteristics of ischaemic stroke in young adults in the autonomous community of Aragon, Spain.
Methods: A cross-sectional, multi-centre study was conducted by the neurology departments of all hospitals in the Aragonese Health Service. We identified all patients aged between 18 and 50 years who were admitted to any of these hospitals with a diagnosis of ischaemic stroke or TIA between January 2005 and December 2015. Data were collected on demographic variables, vascular risk factors, and type of stroke, among other variables.
Results: During the study period, 786 patients between 18 and 50 years old were admitted with a diagnosis of ischaemic stroke or TIA to any hospital of Aragon, at a mean annual rate of 12.3 per 100 000 population. The median age was 45 years (IQR: 40-48 years). The most prevalent vascular risk factor was tobacco use, in 404 patients (51.4%). The majority of strokes were of undetermined cause (36.2%), followed by other causes (26.5%). The median NIHSS score was 3.5 (IQR: 2.0-7.0). In total, 211 patients (26.8%) presented TIA. Fifty-nine per cent of the patients admitted with a diagnosis of ischaemic stroke (10.3%) were treated with fibrinolysis.
Conclusions: Ischaemic stroke in young adults is not uncommon in Aragon, and is of undetermined aetiology in a considerable number of cases; it is therefore necessary to implement measures to improve study of the condition, to reduce its incidence, and to prevent its recurrence
Strong Carbon Features and a Red Early Color in the Underluminous Type Ia SN 2022xkq
We present optical, infrared, ultraviolet, and radio observations of SN
2022xkq, an underluminous fast-declining type Ia supernova (SN Ia) in NGC 1784
( Mpc), from to 180 days after explosion. The
high-cadence observations of SN 2022xkq, a photometrically transitional and
spectroscopically 91bg-like SN Ia, cover the first days and weeks following
explosion which are critical to distinguishing between explosion scenarios. The
early light curve of SN 2022xkq has a red early color and exhibits a flux
excess which is more prominent in redder bands; this is the first time such a
feature has been seen in a transitional/91bg-like SN Ia. We also present 92
optical and 19 near-infrared (NIR) spectra, beginning 0.4 days after explosion
in the optical and 2.6 days after explosion in the NIR. SN 2022xkq exhibits a
long-lived C I 1.0693 m feature which persists until 5 days post-maximum.
We also detect C II 6580 in the pre-maximum optical spectra. These
lines are evidence for unburnt carbon that is difficult to reconcile with the
double detonation of a sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf. No existing
explosion model can fully explain the photometric and spectroscopic dataset of
SN 2022xkq, but the considerable breadth of the observations is ideal for
furthering our understanding of the processes which produce faint SNe Ia.Comment: 38 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ, the figure 15

Low-Cost Experimental Methodology for the Dynamic Model Approximation of Multirotor Actuators
A methodology for the experimental modelling of the electric actuators of a multirotor is presented in this work. These actuators are usually brushless DC motors which are driven by electronic speed controllers in an open loop. The duty cycle of a PWM signal, generated by the electronic control unit, is the input of the electronic controller. However, during the control design procedure for the multirotor, it is important to account with a model of the actuators as its dynamical features define the closed-loop performance of the overall aircraft. Hence, a procedure, based on low-cost electronic components, to obtain approximated transfer functions of the actuators of a multirotor is presented. Moreover, as the proposed signal processing algorithms are simple, the computational capabilities of the required embedded system are also low. Given that different control schemes require different information from the actuator, two models were obtained: a duty cycle vs. angular velocity transfer function and a duty cycle vs. consumed current transfer function. The effectivity of the proposal is validated with experimental results on common electric actuators of a multirotor
Use of Investigator 24plex GO! To analyse allele frequencies of 21 autosomal STRs in the population of Veracruz state, Mexico
Background Mexican population databases for autosomal STRs are scarce, and no previous studies have been performed with the Qiagen Investigator 24plex GO! Aim To analyse the frequency of 21 autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) loci and forensic parameters in individuals from Veracruz state, Mexico. Subjects and methods A total of 234 unrelated individuals were analysed with the Investigator 24plex GO! Kit, which includes the following autosomal STRs: TH01, D3S1358, vWA, D21S11, TPOX, D1S1656, D12S391, SE33, D10S1248, D22S1045, D19S433, D8S133879, D2S1338, D2S441, D18S51, FGA, D16S539, CSF1PO, D13S317, D5S818, and D7S820. Allele frequencies, forensic parameters, and relationships with neighbouring Mexican populations were estimated. Results The STRs analysed were in Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE). The combined matching probability and combined PE were 1.5266 E-24 and 0.999999988711, respectively. The D18S51 and SE33 loci presented the highest Ho (0.8974 and 0.8932) and PE (0.7902 and 0.7815), respectively. The highest PIC (0.9337) and PD (0.9894) values corresponded to SE33. Conversely, D22S1045 had the lowest PIC and PE (0.5533 and 0.3546, respectively). A population cluster among southern Mexican populations, which included non-differentiation between Guerrero and Veracruz states was detected. Conclusion The forensic efficacy of the 21 STRs analysed by the Investigator 24plex GO! Kit was evaluated in the Veracruz state. Moreover, new population clusters that have not yet been described and are related to geographic regions were identified, and these are in agreement with previously reported ancestral differences
Bone Microenvironment-Suppressed T Cells Increase Osteoclast Formation and Osteolytic Bone Metastases in Mice
Immunotherapies use components of the immune system, such as T cells, to fight cancer cells, and are changing cancer treatment, causing durable responses in some patients. Bone metastases are a debilitating complication in advanced breast and prostate cancer patients. Approved treatments fail to cure bone metastases or increase patient survival and it remains unclear whether immunotherapy could benefit patients. The bone microenvironment combines various immunosuppressive factors, and combined with T cell products could increase bone resorption fueling the vicious cycle of bone metastases. Using syngeneic mouse models, our study revealed that bone metastases from 4T1 breast cancer contain tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TILs) and their development is increased in normal mice compared to immunodeficient and T-cell depleted mice. This effect seemed caused by the TILs specifically in bone, because T-cell depletion increased 4T1 orthotopic tumors and did not affect bone metastases from RM-1 prostate cancer cells, which lack TILs. T cells increased osteoclast formation ex vivo and in vivo contributing to bone metastasis vicious cycle. This pro-osteoclastic effect is specific to unactivated T cells, because activated T cells, secreting interferon γ (IFNγ) and interleukin 4 (IL-4), actually suppressed osteoclastogenesis, which could benefit patients. However, non-activated T cells from bone metastases could not be activated in ex vivo cultures. 4T1 bone metastases were associated with an increase of functional polymorphonuclear and monocytic myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), potent T-cell suppressors. Although effective in other models, sildenafil and zoledronic acid did not affect MDSCs in bone metastases. Seeking other therapeutic targets, we found that monocytic MDSCs are more potent suppressors than polymorphonuclear MDSCs, expressing programmed cell death receptor-1 ligand (PD-L1)+ in bone, which could trigger T-cell suppression because 70% express its receptor, programmed cell death receptor-1 (PD-1). Collectively, our findings identified a new mechanism by which suppressed T cells increase osteoclastogenesis and bone metastases. Our results also provide a rationale for using immunotherapy because T-cell activation would increase their anti-cancer and their anti-osteoclastic properties
