The Pros and Cons of Compressive Sensing for Wideband Signal Acquisition: Noise Folding vs. Dynamic Range
Compressive sensing (CS) exploits the sparsity present in many signals to
reduce the number of measurements needed for digital acquisition. With this
reduction would come, in theory, commensurate reductions in the size, weight,
power consumption, and/or monetary cost of both signal sensors and any
associated communication links. This paper examines the use of CS in the design
of a wideband radio receiver in a noisy environment. We formulate the problem
statement for such a receiver and establish a reasonable set of requirements
that a receiver should meet to be practically useful. We then evaluate the
performance of a CS-based receiver in two ways: via a theoretical analysis of
its expected performance, with a particular emphasis on noise and dynamic
range, and via simulations that compare the CS receiver against the performance
expected from a conventional implementation. On the one hand, we show that
CS-based systems that aim to reduce the number of acquired measurements are
somewhat sensitive to signal noise, exhibiting a 3dB SNR loss per octave of
subsampling, which parallels the classic noise-folding phenomenon. On the other
hand, we demonstrate that since they sample at a lower rate, CS-based systems
can potentially attain a significantly larger dynamic range. Hence, we conclude
that while a CS-based system has inherent limitations that do impose some
restrictions on its potential applications, it also has attributes that make it
highly desirable in a number of important practical settings
Direct reduction of pellets through hydrogen: Experimental and model behaviour
This paper presents the hydrogen reduction behaviour of industrial pellets designed for the efficient hydrogen based direct reduction. The pellets were provided with very low non ferrous oxides percentage (0.52 of basicity index) and with the absence on TiO2 oxides. The pellets measured diameters in the range 1.14–1.72 cm and were characterized in terms of porosity, pores size, tortuosity and compression strength. The pellets were reduced in hydrogen atmosphere in a laboratory shaft furnace in the temperature ranges of 600–1200 °C at the pressures of 1 and 5 bar. The pellets' reduction behaviour was analysed in terms of time to reduction, rate of reduction and kinetics constant. All the obtained results were analysed through the employment of a commercial multi-objective optimization tool (modeFrontier) in order to precisely define the effect of each single parameter on the pellets’ reduction. It was also defined the effect of the ongoing reduction rate of the final metallization of the starting iron oxides
Stress, Health Risk Behaviors, and Weight Status Among Community College Students
The objective of this study was to describe the relationship between stress, weight-related health risk behaviors (e.g., eating behaviors, physical activity, sedentary behavior, sleep, cigarette smoking and binge drinking), and weight status using cross-sectional data on 2-year community college students enrolled in a randomized controlled weight gain prevention trial. Modified Poisson regression and linear regression were used to examine crude and adjusted cross-sectional associations. Higher stress was associated with higher prevalence of overweight/obesity (crude PR=1.05 [95% CI 1.01, 1.09]), though the relationship was no longer statistically significant after controlling for a wide range of weight-related health risk behaviors (adjusted PR=1.04 [95% CI 1.00, 1.08]). Stress levels were significantly associated with meal skipping and being a current smoker. Future research should investigate the mechanisms through which stress is related to obesity risk and examine the causes of stress among this understudied population to inform the design of appropriate interventions
A Randomized Controlled Trial on Very Early Speech and Language Therapy in Acute Stroke Patients with Aphasia
Background: Aphasia affects one third of acute stroke patients. There is a considerable spontaneous recovery in aphasia, but impaired communication ability remains a great problem. Communication difficulties are an impediment to rehabilitation. Early treatment of the language deficits leading to increased communication ability would improve rehabilitation. The aim of this study is to elucidate the efficacy of very early speech and language therapy (SLT) in acute stroke patients with aphasia. Methods: A prospective, open, randomized, controlled trial was carried out with blinded endpoint evaluation of SLT, starting within 2 days of stroke onset and lasting for 21 days. 123 consecutive patients with acute, first-ever ischemic stroke and aphasia were randomized. The SLT treatment was Language Enrichment Therapy, and the aphasia tests used were the Norsk grunntest for afasi (NGA) and the Amsterdam-Nijmegen everyday language test (ANELT), both performed by speech pathologists, blinded for randomization. Results: The primary outcome, as measured by ANELT at day 21, was 1.3 in the actively treated patient group and 1.2 among controls. NGA led to similar results in both groups. Patients with a higher level of education (>12 years) improved more on ANELT by day 21 than those with Conclusions: Very early intensive SLT with the Language Enrichment Therapy program over 21 days had no effect on the degree of aphasia in unselected acute aphasic stroke patients. In aphasic patients with more fluency, SLT resulted in a significant improvement as compared to controls. A higher educational level of >12 years was beneficial
Recruiting and retaining young adults in a weight gain prevention trial: Lessons learned from the CHOICES study
Young adults are at risk for weight gain but little is known about designing effective weight control trials for young adults or how to recruit and retain participants in these programs. The Choosing Healthy Options in College Environments and Settings (CHOICES) study evaluated the effectiveness of a weight gain prevention intervention for 2-year college students. We describe the methods used to recruit and retain the colleges and their students, describe the sample and discuss recommendations for future studies
