Analysis of Doppler Effect on the Pulse Compression of Different Codes Emitted by an Ultrasonic LPS
This work analyses the effect of the receiver movement on the detection by pulse compression of different families of codes characterizing the emissions of an Ultrasonic Local Positioning System. Three families of codes have been compared: Kasami, Complementary Sets of Sequences and Loosely Synchronous, considering in all cases three different lengths close to 64, 256 and 1,024 bits. This comparison is first carried out by using a system model in order to obtain a set of results that are then experimentally validated with the help of an electric slider that provides radial speeds up to 2 m/s. The performance of the codes under analysis has been characterized by means of the auto-correlation and cross-correlation bounds. The results derived from this study should be of interest to anyone performing matched filtering of ultrasonic signals with a moving emitter/receiver
Absorption of Scintillation Light in a 100 Liquid Xenon Ray Detector and Expected Detector Performance
An 800L liquid xenon scintillation ray detector is being developed
for the MEG experiment which will search for decay
at the Paul Scherrer Institut. Absorption of scintillation light of xenon by
impurities might possibly limit the performance of such a detector. We used a
100L prototype with an active volume of 372x372x496 mm to study the
scintillation light absorption. We have developed a method to evaluate the
light absorption, separately from elastic scattering of light, by measuring
cosmic rays and sources. By using a suitable purification technique,
an absorption length longer than 100 cm has been achieved. The effects of the
light absorption on the energy resolution are estimated by Monte Carlo
simulation.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures (eps). Submitted to Nucl. Instr. and Meth.
The MEG detector for decay search
The MEG (Mu to Electron Gamma) experiment has been running at the Paul
Scherrer Institut (PSI), Switzerland since 2008 to search for the decay \meg\
by using one of the most intense continuous beams in the world. This
paper presents the MEG components: the positron spectrometer, including a thin
target, a superconducting magnet, a set of drift chambers for measuring the
muon decay vertex and the positron momentum, a timing counter for measuring the
positron time, and a liquid xenon detector for measuring the photon energy,
position and time. The trigger system, the read-out electronics and the data
acquisition system are also presented in detail. The paper is completed with a
description of the equipment and techniques developed for the calibration in
time and energy and the simulation of the whole apparatus.Comment: 59 pages, 90 figure
The equivalence of four extensions of context-free grammars
There is currently considerable interest among computational linguists in grammatical formalisms with highly restricted generative power. This paper concerns the relationship between the class of string languages generated by several such formalisms, namely, combinatory categorial grammars, head grammars, linear indexed grammars, and tree adjoining grammars. Each of these formalisms is known to generate a larger class of languages than context-free grammars. The four formalisms under consideration were developed independently and appear superficially to be quite different from one another. The result presented in this paper is that all four of the formalisms under consideration generate exactly the same class of string languages
Information-bit error rate and false positives in an MDS code
In this paper, a refinement of the weight distribution in an MDS code is
computed. Concretely, the number of codewords with a fixed amount of nonzero
bits in both information and redundancy parts is obtained. This refinement
improves the theoretical approximation of the information-bit and -symbol error
rate, in terms of the channel bit-error rate, in a block transmission through a
discrete memoryless channel. Since a bounded distance reproducing encoder is
assumed, the computation of the here-called false positive (a decoding failure
with no information-symbol error) is provided. As a consequence, a new
performance analysis of an MDS code is proposed
Measurement of the CP Violation Parameter sin(2phi_1) in B^0_d Meson Decays
We present a measurement of the Standard Model CP violation parameter
sin(2phi_1) based on a 10.5 fb^{-1} data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S)
resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e+e- collider. One
neutral B meson is reconstructed in the J/psi K_S, psi(2S) K_S, chi_{c1} K_S,
eta_c K_S, J/psi K_L or J/psi pi^0 CP-eigenstate decay channel and the flavor
of the accompanying B meson is identified from its charged particle decay
products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time interval between
the two B-meson decay points, we determine sin(2phi_1) = 0.58 +0.32-0.34 (stat)
+0.09-0.10 (syst).Comment: LaTex, 13 pages, 3 figures, submitted to P.R.
