    Impacts of Agricultural Expansion on Surface Runoff: A Case Study of a River Basin in the Brazilian Legal Amazon

    This work presents an analysis of the Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) changes of a region in the Brazilian Legal Amazon, and an evaluation of their impacts on the surface runoff regime. This case study took place at the Suiá-Miçu River basin, located in the northeast region of Mato Grosso State. LULC maps were produced for the years 1973, 1984 and 2005 using remote sensing data. After analyzing the agricultural expansion in the study area, the Automated Geospatial Watershed Assessment Tool (AGWA) was applied in performing the surface runoff modeling for each of the analyzed years using the SCS curve number method. The results showed that by 1984, 13% of the natural vegetation had been replaced by pasture in this drainage basin. These changes were responsible for a 5.7% increase in the annual average surface runoff volume when compared with the baseline values of 1973. In 2005, the agricultural areas increased to around 40% of the drainage basin, being 28% occupied by pasture and 12% by crop fields. In this last scenario, the annual average surface runoff was 37% higher than in 1973

    A geoestatística se destaca como uma metodologia da estatística espacial, que utiliza inclusive a posição geográfica dos dados amostrais para caracterizar uma ou mais variáveis em estudo, além de interpolar de maneira ótima, estatisticamente, em locais não amostrados. Com a popularização dessa metodologia, várias formas diferentes de análises têm surgido, inclusive utilizando o mesmo programa. Dentro desse contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar se existem diferenças consideráveis nos resultados de uma análise geoestatística entre duas formas distintas de análise, através de dois scripts diferentes, utilizando o pacote geoR, para o mesmo conjunto de dados, no programa R. Foram avaliados 35 indicadores, que foram divididos em tabelas, de acordo com a etapa do processo analítico. Em termos gerais, o script 1 apresentou pequena superioridade em relação ao script 2

    Quality and Safety Aspects of Infant Nutrition

    Quality and safety aspects of infant nutrition are of key importance for child health, but oftentimes they do not get much attention by health care professionals whose interest tends to focus on functional benefits of early nutrition. Unbalanced diets and harmful food components induce particularly high risks for untoward effects in infants because of their rapid growth, high nutrient needs, and their typical dependence on only one or few foods during the first months of life. The concepts, standards and practices that relate to infant food quality and safety were discussed at a scientific workshop organized by the Child Health Foundation and the Early Nutrition Academy jointly with the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, and a summary is provided here. The participants reviewed past and current issues on quality and safety, the role of different stakeholders, and recommendations to avert future issues. It was concluded that a high level of quality and safety is currently achieved, but this is no reason for complacency. The food industry carries the primary responsibility for the safety and suitability of their products, including the quality of composition, raw materials and production processes. Introduction of new or modified products should be preceded by a thorough science based review of suitability and safety by an independent authority. Food safety events should be managed on an international basis. Global collaboration of food producers, food-safety authorities, paediatricians and scientists is needed to efficiently exchange information and to best protect public health. Copyright (C) 2012 S.     Effects of Mowing on Methane Uptake in a Semiarid Grassland in Northern China

    Background: Mowing is a widely adopted management practice for the semiarid steppe in China and affects CH4 exchange. However, the magnitude and the underlying mechanisms for CH 4 uptake in response to mowing remain uncertain. Methodology/Principal Findings: In two consecutive growing seasons, we measured the effect of mowing on CH 4 uptake in a steppe community. Vegetation was mowed to 2 cm (M2), 5 cm (M5), 10 cm (M10), 15 cm (M15) above soil surface, respectively, and control was set as non-mowing (NM). Compared with control, CH4 uptake was substantially enhanced at almost all the mowing treatments except for M15 plots of 2009. CH4 uptake was significantly correlated with soil microbial biomass carbon, microbial biomass nitrogen, and soil moisture. Mowing affects CH 4 uptake primarily through its effect on some biotic factors, such as net primary productivity, soil microbial C\N supply and soil microbial activities, while soil temperature and moisture were less important.
