    Bayesian anomaly detection methods for social networks

    Learning the network structure of a large graph is computationally demanding, and dynamically monitoring the network over time for any changes in structure threatens to be more challenging still. This paper presents a two-stage method for anomaly detection in dynamic graphs: the first stage uses simple, conjugate Bayesian models for discrete time counting processes to track the pairwise links of all nodes in the graph to assess normality of behavior; the second stage applies standard network inference tools on a greatly reduced subset of potentially anomalous nodes.     Adaptive time-stepping for incompressible flow. Part II: Navier-Stokes equations

    We outline a new class of robust and efficient methods for solving the Navier- Stokes equations. We describe a general solution strategy that has two basic building blocks: an implicit time integrator using a stabilized trapezoid rule with an explicit Adams-Bashforth method for error control, and a robust Krylov subspace solver for the spatially discretized system. We present numerical experiments illustrating the potential of our approach. © 2010 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics

    Linear Collider Physics

    The International Linear Collider has a rich physics programme, whatever lies beyond the standard model. Accurate measurement of the top quark mass is needed to constrain the model or its extensions. If there is a light Higgs boson the LHC should see it, but the ILC will pin down its characteristics and test them against model predictions. If Supersymmetric particles appear the ILC will measure a complementary set of them to those seen at the LHC, and may allow extrapolation to the Grand Unified scale. And if a strong electroweak sector is indicated the ILC will be sensitive to the presence of new structures in difermion and diboson systems up to higher masses than the direct search range of the LHC. Beyond the LHC and ILC there could be need for a multi TeV lepton collider.Comment: Plenary talk at ICHEP 2004, Beijing, 22 August 200

    Templated mineralization by charge-modified cowpea mosaic virus

    Templated mineralization of virus particles provides routes to narrowly dispersed nanoparticles that are not readily prepared by other means. The templated mineralization of metal or metal oxide on the external surface of wild-type cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV), a plant virus, is facilitated by increasing the external surface negative charge. This is achieved by the chemical modification of surface lysine groups by succinic anhydride. Hence, for example, treatment of charge-modified CPMV succinamate with a 1:2 mixture of iron(II) and iron(III) salts, followed by raising the pH to 10.2, led to the formation of narrowly dispersed, CPMV-templated, magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles

    Polyelectrolyte-modified cowpea mosaic virus for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles

    Polyelectrolyte surface-modified cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) can be used for the templated synthesis of narrowly dispersed gold nanoparticles. Cationic polyelectrolyte, poly(allylamine) hydrochloride, is electrostatically bound to the external surface of the virus capsid. The polyelectrolyte-coated CPMV promotes adsorption of aqueous gold hydroxide anionic species, prepared from gold(III) chloride and potassium carbonate, that are easily reduced to form CPMV-templated gold nanoparticles. The process is simple and environmentally benign using only water as solvent at ambient temperature

    The distribution of chlorophyll in the western Indian Ocean during the northeast monsoon period, February 13-July 16, 1965

    This report contains the observations of phytoplankton pigment characteristics made during ATLANTIS II Cruise No. 15 in the western Indian Ocean and its reaches during the period of February 13 through July 16, 1965. As pointed out in a previous report for this region (Laird et al., 1964), the observations should by no means be considered synoptic since short-term variation will occur in biological measurements. The value of the present observations is greatly enhanced by the fact that they repeat and extend the previous data from ATLANTIS II Cruise No. 8 for the area, but are taken at the opposite period of the year for all regions. The data permit only a first approximation of the relative fertility in the area, yet the seasonal contrast becomes an important consideration in the analysis and interpretation of the data. It is believed that this represents the first such large-scale survey for Indian Ocean waters.The National Science Foundation under Grant NSF-GP 82
