Effect of global stability failure on compression-after-impact test results
An experimental study concerned with evaluating the influence of test specimen stability on the compression-after-impact (CAI) behaviour of carbon fibre-reinforced composites is presented. Impact-damaged as well as undamaged quasi-isotropic laminates were tested employing a Boeing-type CAI test procedure. The loading fixture typical of this type of test uses only edge supports as anti-buckling guides. In a second series of tests, additional face supports were applied to avoid any global buckling. The experimental results obtained indicate that measured pre- and post-impact strength data depend greatly on the support conditions. The edge supports of the basic fixture proved to be insufficient to prevent premature buckling failure of undamaged laminates as well as of those subjected to low-energy impacts. The modified fixture with face supports provided considerably higher compressive strengths for such impact conditions. (orig.)SIGLEDEGerman
