    Measurements of K0^{0}S_{S}, Λ , and Λˉ\bar{Λ} production in 120 GeV / c p + C interactions

This paper presents multiplicity measurements of K0S, Λ, and ¯Λ produced in 120  GeV/c proton-carbon interactions. The measurements were made using data collected at the NA61/SHINE experiment during two different periods. Decays of these neutral hadrons impact the measured π+, π−, p and ¯p multiplicities in the 120  GeV/c proton-carbon reaction, which are crucial inputs for long-baseline neutrino experiment predictions of neutrino beam flux. The double-differential multiplicities presented here will be used to more precisely measure charged-hadron multiplicities in this reaction, and to reweight neutral hadron production in neutrino beam Monte Carlo simulations

Measurements of KS0K_S^0 meson production via its π+π\pi^{+} \pi^{-} decay mode in inelastic p+p\textit{p+p} interactions at incident projectile momenta of 31, 40 and 80 GeV/cc (sNN=7.7,8.8\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7, 8.8 and 12.312.3 GeV, respectively) are presented. The data were recorded by the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. Double-differential distributions were obtained in transverse momentum and rapidity. The mean multiplicities of KS0K_S^0 mesons were determined to be (5.95±0.19(stat)±0.22(sys))×102(5.95 \pm 0.19 (stat) \pm 0.22 (sys)) \times 10^{-2} at 31 GeV/cc, (7.61±0.13(stat)±0.31(sys))×102(7.61 \pm 0.13 (stat) \pm 0.31 (sys)) \times 10^{-2} at 40 GeV/cc and (11.58±0.12(stat)±0.37(sys))×102(11.58 \pm 0.12 (stat) \pm 0.37 (sys)) \times 10^{-2} at 80 GeV/cc. The results on KS0K^{0}_{S} production are compared with model calculations (Epos1.99, SMASH 2.0 and PHSD) as well as with published data from other experiments.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2106.0753

Progress in cardiovascular anastomoses: will the vascular join replace Carrel's technique?

BACKGROUND: Vascular reconstructions are becoming challenging due to the comorbidity of the aging population and since the introduction of minimally invasive approaches. Many sutureless anastomosis devices have been designed to facilitate the cardiovascular surgeon's work and the vascular join (VJ) is one of these. We designed an animal study to assess its reliability and long-term efficacy. METHODS: VJ allows the construction of end-to-end and end-to-side anastomoses. It consists of two metallic crowns fixed to the extremity of the two conduits so that vessel edges are joined layer by layer. There is no foreign material exposed to blood. In adult sheep both carotid arteries were prepared and severed. End-to-end anastomoses were performed using the VJ device on one side and the classical running suture technique on the other side. Animals were followed-up with Duplex-scan every 3 months and sacrificed after 12 months. Histopathological analysis was carried out. RESULTS: In 20 animals all 22 sutureless anastomoses were successfully completed in less than 2 min versus 6 +/- 3 min for running suture. Duplex showed the occlusion of three controls and one sutureless anastomosis. Two controls and one sutureless had stenosis >50%. Histology showed very thin layer of myointimal hyperplasia (50 +/- 10 microm) in the sutureless group versus 300 +/- 27 microm in the control. No significant inflammatory reaction was detected. CONCLUSIONS: VJ provides edge-to-edge vascular repair that can be considered the most physiological way to restore vessel continuity. For the first time, in healthy sheep, an anastomotic device provided better results than suture technique

Freshwater transitions and symbioses shaped the evolution and extant diversity of caridean shrimps

Understanding the processes that shaped the strikingly irregular distribution of species richness across the Tree of Life is a major research agenda. Changes in ecology may go some way to explain the often strongly asymmetrical fates of sister clades, and we test this in the caridean shrimps. First appearing in the Lower Jurassic, there are now ~3500 species worldwide. Carideans experienced several independent transitions to freshwater from marine habitats, while many of the marine species have also evolved a symbiotic lifestyle. Here we use diversification rate analyses to test whether these ecological traits promote or inhibit diversity within a phylogenetic framework. We demonstrate that speciation rates are more than twice as high in freshwater clades, whilst symbiotic ecologies are associated with lower speciation rates. These lower rates amongst symbiotic species are of concern given that symbioses often occur in some of the most diverse, delicately balanced and threatened marine ecosystems
