Extended-spectrum \u3b2-lactamase (ESBL)- and plasmid mediated AmpC-type cephalosporinase (pAmpC)-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL/pAmpC E. coli) in food-producing animals is a major public health concern. This study aimed at quantifying ESBL/pAmpC-E. coli occurrence and transfer in Italy's broiler production pyramid. Three production chains of an integrated broiler company were investigated. Cloacal swabs were taken from parent stock chickens and offspring broiler flocks in four fattening farms per chain. Carcasses from sampled broiler flocks were collected at slaughterhouse. Samples were processed on selective media, and E. coli colonies were screened for ESBL/pAmpC production. ESBL/pAmpC genes and E. coli phylogroups were determined by PCR and sequencing. Average pairwise overlap of ESBL/pAmpC E. coli gene and phylogroup occurrences between subsequent production stages was estimated using the proportional similarity index, modelling uncertainty in a Monte Carlo simulation setting. In total, 820 samples were processed, from which 513 ESBL/pAmpC E. coli isolates were obtained. We found a high prevalence (92.5%, 95%CI 72.1-98.3%) in day-old parent stock chicks, in which blaCMY-2 predominated; prevalence then dropped to 20% (12.9-29.6%) at laying phase. In fattening broilers, prevalence was 69.2% (53.6-81.3%) at the start of production, 54.2% (38.9-68.6%) at slaughter time, and 61.3% (48.1-72.9%) in carcasses. Significantly decreasing and increasing trends for respectively blaCMY-2 and blaCTX-M-1 gene occurrences were found across subsequent production stages. ESBL/pAmpC E. coli genetic background appeared complex and bla-gene/phylogroup associations indicated clonal and horizontal transmission. Modelling revealed that the average transfer of ESBL/pAmpC E. coli genes between subsequent production stages was 47.7% (42.3-53.4%). We concluded that ESBL/pAmpC E. coli in the broiler production pyramid is prevalent, with substantial transfer between subsequent production levels

Gaze gesture based human robot interaction for laparoscopic surgery

While minimally invasive surgery offers great benefits in terms of reduced patient trauma, bleeding, as well as faster recovery time, it still presents surgeons with major ergonomic challenges. Laparoscopic surgery requires the surgeon to bimanually control surgical instruments during the operation. A dedicated assistant is thus required to manoeuvre the camera, which is often difficult to synchronise with the surgeon’s movements. This article introduces a robotic system in which a rigid endoscope held by a robotic arm is controlled via the surgeon’s eye movement, thus forgoing the need for a camera assistant. Gaze gestures detected via a series of eye movements are used to convey the surgeon’s intention to initiate gaze contingent camera control. Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are used for real-time gaze gesture recognition, allowing the robotic camera to pan, tilt, and zoom, whilst immune to aberrant or unintentional eye movements. A novel online calibration method for the gaze tracker is proposed, which overcomes calibration drift and simplifies its clinical application. This robotic system has been validated by comprehensive user trials and a detailed analysis performed on usability metrics to assess the performance of the system. The results demonstrate that the surgeons can perform their tasks quicker and more efficiently when compared to the use of a camera assistant or foot switches

A study on elasto-plastic impact friction

A purpose-built pendulum machine was used to study the oblique impact and the behaviour of the surface layers of a normalized low alloy steel subjected to the impact of hard [alpha]-alumina balls. The effect of relative tangential velocity on impulses, restitution coefficient and impact energy loss, was analysed. The morphology of the impact indentations was characterized and related to the impulses obtained. There was lip formation in the target material with ejection of a small fragile oxidized chip, at a certain critical sliding speed. The impact duration and the impulse ratio have maximum values. These values seem to be related to the critical angle of attack, common in abrasive and erosive ductile processes. The experimental results were compared with some impact models and theories.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6V5B-3WRC3G0-4/1/41e4c5269f22928dae6bfa3fb640fd0

Six years of study on fast growing forest plantations catchments in the Northwest of Spain

Data on water balance in three fast growing forest plantations experimental catchments in the northwest of Spain are presented. Two watersheds are covered by Eucalyptus globulus and other is covered by Pinus pinaster. During the six years of study severa1 perturbations occurred. In 1989 two consecutives wildfires affected to one E. globulus watershed. The second fire also bumed the other eucalyptus watershed. All eucalyptus were felled since 1991 to 1992. Also 25% of the watershed area in the pine catchment was cutted in 1991. Quick changes in the hydrologycal regimen took place after these perturbations. The very fast recovering capacity after fire and cutting of Eucalyptus globulus facilitated the retum to pre-fire hydrologic parameter values within only a few years. Before perturbations occurred, nutrient balances were very conservative, and were similar among the cathments. This indicates a good performance on the part of both tree plantations. Water comsumption for pine and eucalyptus stands was very similar

Non-physiological increase of AV conduction time in sinus disease patients programmed in AAIR-based pacing mode

Purpose The EVOCAVDS trial aimed to quantify the paradoxal atrioventricular (AV) conduction time lengthening in sinus node (SD) patients (pts) paced in AAIR-based pacing mode. Methods SD pts, implanted with dual-chamber pacemaker programmed in AAIR-based pacing mode, were randomized in two arms for a 1-month period: the low atrial pacing (LAP; basic rate at 60 bpm, dual sensor with minimal slope) and the high atrial pacing (HAP; basic rate at 70 bpm, dual sensor with optimized slope, overdrive pacing) arm. At 1 month, crossover was performed for an additional 1-month period. AV conduction time, AV block occurrence and AV conduction time adaptation during exercise were ascertained from device memories at each follow-up. Results Seventy-nine pts participated to the analysis (75 ± 8 years; 32 male; PR = 184 ± 38 ms; bundle branch block n = 12; AF history n = 36; antiarrhythmic treatment n = 53; beta-blockers n = 27; class III/Ic n = 18; both n = 8). The mean AV conduction time was significantly greater during the HAP (275 ± 51 ms) vs. LAP (263 ± 49 ms) period (p < 0.0001). Class III/Ic drugs were the only predictors of this abnormal behaviour. Degree II/III AV blocks occurred in 49 % of pts in the HAP vs. 19 % in the LAP period (p < 0.0001). Fifty-two patients (66 %) presented a lengthening of AV conduction time during exercise. Conclusion AAIR-based pacing in SD pts may induce a significant lengthening of pts’ AV conduction time, including frequent abnormal adaptation of AV conduction time during exercise

Parametric instabilities in the LCGT arm cavity

We evaluated the parametric instabilities of LCGT (Japanese interferometric gravitational wave detector project) arm cavity. The number of unstable modes of LCGT is 10-times smaller than that of Advanced LIGO (U.S.A.). Since the strength of the instabilities of LCGT depends on the mirror curvature more weakly than that of Advanced LIGO, the requirement of the mirror curvature accuracy is easier to be achieved. The difference in the parametric instabilities between LCGT and Advanced LIGO is because of the thermal noise reduction methods (LCGT, cooling sapphire mirrors; Advanced LIGO, fused silica mirrors with larger laser beams), which are the main strategies of the projects. Elastic Q reduction by the barrel surface (0.2 mm thickness Ta2_2O5_5) coating is effective to suppress instabilities in the LCGT arm cavity. Therefore, the cryogenic interferometer is a smart solution for the parametric instabilities in addition to thermal noise and thermal lensing.Comment: 6 pages,3 figures. Amaldi7 proceedings, J.
