    Towards semantic software engineering environments

Software tools processing partially common set of data should share an understanding of what these data mean. Since ontologies have been used to express formally a shared understanding of information, we argue that they are a way towards Semantic SEEs. In this paper we discuss an ontology-based approach to tool integration and present ODE, an ontology-based SEE

Polyimide hollow fiber membranes for CO2 separation from wet gas mixtures

Matrimid®5218 hollow fiber membranes were prepared using the dry-wet spinning process. The transport properties were measured with pure gases (H2, CO2, N2, CH4 and O2) and with a mixture (30% CO2 and 70% N2) in dry and wet conditions at 25 ºC, 50 ºC, 60 ºC and 75 ºC and up to 600 kPa. Interesting values of single gas selectivity up to 60 ºC (between 31 and 28 for CO2/N2 and between 33 and 30 for CO2/CH4) in dry condition were obtained. The separation factor measured for the mixture was 20% lower compared to the single gas selectivity, in the whole temperature range analyzed. In saturation conditions the data showed that water influences the performance of the membranes, inducing a reduction of the permeance of all gases. Moreover, the presence of water caused a decrease of single gas selectivity and separation factor, although not so significant, highlighting the very high water resistance of hollow fiber membrane modules

A mixed integer linear program to compress transition probability matrices in Markov chain bootstrapping

    Get PDF
Bootstrapping time series is one of the most acknowledged tools to study the statistical properties of an evolutive phenomenon. An important class of bootstrapping methods is based on the assumption that the sampled phenomenon evolves according to a Markov chain. This assumption does not apply when the process takes values in a continuous set, as it frequently happens with time series related to economic and financial phenomena. In this paper we apply the Markov chain theory for bootstrapping continuous-valued processes, starting from a suitable discretization of the support that provides the state space of a Markov chain of order k≥1. Even for small k, the number of rows of the transition probability matrix is generally too large and, in many practical cases, it may incorporate much more information than it is really required to replicate the phenomenon satisfactorily. The paper aims to study the problem of compressing the transition probability matrix while preserving the “law” characterising the process that generates the observed time series, in order to obtain bootstrapped series that maintain the typical features of the observed time series. For this purpose, we formulate a partitioning problem of the set of rows of such a matrix and propose a mixed integer linear program specifically tailored for this particular problem. We also provide an empirical analysis by applying our model to the time series of Spanish and German electricity prices, and we show that, in these medium size real-life instances, bootstrapped time series reproduce the typical features of the ones under observation. Remarks on 2+1 Self-dual Chern-Simons Gravity

    Get PDF
We study 2+1 Chern-Simons gravity at the classical action level. In particular we rederive the linear combinations of the ``standard'' and ``exotic'' Einstein actions, from the (anti) self-duality of the ``internal'' Lorentzian indices. The relation to a genuine four-dimensional (anti)self-dual topological theory greatly facilitates the analysis and its relation to hyperbolic three-dimensional geometry. Finally a non-abelian vector field ``dual'' action is also obtained.Comment: 16+1 pages, LaTeX file, no figures, clarifications and comments added, typos corrected and one reference adde

The Strategic Exploitation of Limited Information and Opportunity in Networked Markets

This paper studies the effect of constraining interactions within a market. A model is analysed in which boundedly rational agents trade with and gather information from their neighbours within a trade network. It is demonstrated that a trader’s ability to profit and to identify the equilibrium price is positively correlated with its degree of connectivity within the market. Where traders differ in their number of potential trading partners, well-connected traders are found to benefit from aggressive trading behaviour.Where information propagation is constrained by the topology of the trade network, connectedness affects the nature of the strategies employed

Effects of Metformin With or Without Supplementation With Folate on Homocysteine Levels and Vascular Endothelium of Women With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the administration of metformin exerts any effects on serum homocysteine (Hcy) levels in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and whether supplementation with folate enhances the positive effects of metformin on the structure and function of the vascular endothelium. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 50 patients affected by PCOS, without additional metabolic or cardiovascular diseases, were enrolled in a prospective nonrandomized placebo-controlled double-blind clinical study. They were grouped into two treatment arms that were matched for age and BMI. Patients were treated with a 6-month course of metformin (1,700 mg daily) plus folic acid (400 microg daily; experimental group, n = 25) or placebo (control group, n = 25). Complete hormonal and metabolic patterns, serum Hcy, folate, vitamin B12, endothelin-1 levels, brachial artery diameter at the baseline (BAD-B) and after reactive hyperemia (BAD-RH), flow-mediated dilation, and intima-media thickness in both common carotid arteries were evaluated. RESULTS: After treatment, a significant increase in serum Hcy levels was observed in the control group compared with the baseline values and the experimental group. A beneficial effect was observed in the concentrations of BAD-B, BAD-RH, flow-mediated dilation, intima-media thickness, and serum endothelin-1 in both groups. However, the results were improved more significantly in the experimental group than in the control subjects. CONCLUSIONS: Metformin exerts a slight but significant deleterious effect on serum Hcy levels in patients with PCOS, and supplementation with folate is useful to increase the beneficial effect of metformin on the vascular endothelium
