Haemostasis in Open Carpal Tunnel Release: Tourniquet vs Local Anaesthetic and Adrenaline
Open carpal tunnel release is one of the commonest performed procedures in hand surgery. We performed a
prospective randomised control trial to compare the efficacy and patient satisfaction of the traditional arm tourniquet
versus infiltration of adrenaline and local anaesthetic solution to achieve haemostasis during the procedure. Using a
combination of objective and subjective measures we concluded that infiltration of local anaesthetic and adrenaline not
only provided adequate haemostasis but also provided a significantly more tolerable experience for the patient during the
procedure

The impact of associational life on trust in local institutions: a comparison of 57 Swiss municipalities
In this paper, we evaluate the impact of associational life on individual political trust in 57 Swiss municipalities. Our hierarchical regression models show that individual political trust is not only affected by individual associational membership but also by the exchange between associations and local political authorities in a community. In other words, if political authorities and associations are linked at the community level, citizens will place more trust in their local institutions. Furthermore, we find clear evidence for the rainmaker hypothesis: our results show that the positive effect of a vibrant connection between associational life and local politics on political trust is not solely confined to the associational members themselves, but rather indicate that the structure of the local civic culture fosters political trust among members and non-members at the same time. However, the internal democratic processes of associations have no effect on individualsâ trust in local political institutions
Can the displacement of a conservatively treated distal radius fracture be predicted at the beginning of treatment?
The aim of this study was to investigate whether the final displacement of conservatively treated distal radius fractures can be predicted after primary reduction. We analysed the radiographic documents of 311 patients with a conservatively treated distal radius fracture at the time of injury, after reduction and after bony consolidation. We measured the dorsal angulation (DA), the radial angle (RA) and the radial shortening (RS) at each time point. The parameters were analysed separately for metaphyseally âstableâ (A2, C1) and âunstableâ (A3, C2, C3) fractures, according to the AO classification system. Spearmanâs rank correlations and regression functions were determined for the analysis. The highest correlations were found for the DA between the time points âreductionâ and âcomplete healingâ (râ=â0.75) and for the RA between the time points âreductionâ and âcomplete healingâ (râ=â0.80). The DA and the RA after complete healing can be predicted from the regression functions
