Clinical presentation and treatment of multifocal epitrichial sweat gland carcinoma in a horse
Epitrichial gland carcinoma is a very rare type of skin tumour in horses. This report describes a horse presenting multiple nodules with associated normal, alopecic and ulcerated skin diagnosed via histopathology as epitrichial gland carcinoma. Treatment consisted of combined surgical excision, topical therapy for ulcerated nodules and cryotherapy for non-ulcerated tumours. Six months following therapy, the excised masses had not regrown and only 10 out of 25 small tumours previously treated with cryotherapy were noticeable
Ultrasonographic study of the right coronary artery in performance horses
Historically, echocardiography has focused on the assessment of cardiac dimensions and indices of cardiac function. However, when referred to ultrasonographic coronary arteries characterisation in the horse, information is scarce. The purpose of this study was to describe the right coronary artery in both long and short axis and to analyse its variability between horses with different levels of performance. Sixty healthy horses were included in the study. The animals were eventing horses at different levels of performance and were allocated into two groups according to their athletic level. The internal lumen diameter and the area of the right coronary artery (RCA) were measured in the right parasternal long and short axis views in the 3rd and 4th intercostal space respectively, during systole and diastole. The results were compared between groups using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Student’s t-test. The correlation between the physiological parameters and the RCA was assessed using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Statistically significant differences were found when the RCA internal diameter was assessed between groups in both short and long axis. There were no statistically significant differences intra-group when short and long axis measurements were compared between each other. A positive correlation was observed between RCA and age, height, left atrium diameter, aortic valve diameter, sinus of Valsalva diameter, and aorta diameter. In conclusion, the level of training might affect the ultrasound measurement of the RCA in sport horses. Non-invasive echocardiography can be used to consistently assess the size of the right coronary artery in athletic horses in both short and long axis
Continuum description of finite-size particles advected by external flows. The effect of collisions
The equation of the density field of an assembly of macroscopic particles
advected by a hydrodynamic flow is derived from the microscopic description of
the system. This equation allows to recognize the role and the relative
importance of the different microscopic processes implicit in the model: the
driving of the external flow, the inertia of the particles, and the collisions
among them.
The validity of the density description is confirmed by comparisons of
numerical studies of the continuum equation with Direct Simulation Monte Carlo
(DSMC) simulations of hard disks advected by a chaotic flow. We show that the
collisions have two competing roles: a dispersing-like effect and a clustering
effect (even for elastic collisions). An unexpected feature is also observed in
the system: the presence of collisions can reverse the effect of inertia, so
that grains with lower inertia are more clusterized.Comment: Final (strongly modified) version accepted in PRE; 6 pages, 3 figure
Flow networks: A characterization of geophysical fluid transport
We represent transport between different regions of a fluid domain by flow
networks, constructed from the discrete representation of the Perron-Frobenius
or transfer operator associated to the fluid advection dynamics. The procedure
is useful to analyze fluid dynamics in geophysical contexts, as illustrated by
the construction of a flow network associated to the surface circulation in the
Mediterranean sea. We use network-theory tools to analyze the flow network and
gain insights into transport processes. In particular we quantitatively relate
dispersion and mixing characteristics, classically quantified by Lyapunov
exponents, to the degree of the network nodes. A family of network entropies is
defined from the network adjacency matrix, and related to the statistics of
stretching in the fluid, in particular to the Lyapunov exponent field. Finally
we use a network community detection algorithm, Infomap, to partition the
Mediterranean network into coherent regions, i.e. areas internally well mixed,
but with little fluid interchange between them.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures. v2: published versio
Lattice points in rational ellipsoids
AbstractWe combine exponential sums, character sums and Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms to improve the best known upper bound for the lattice error term associated to rational ellipsoids
Advances in preservation of fruits and vegetables with bioactive coatings
Bioactive compounds are a large group of compounds (antimicrobials, antioxidants, nutrients, etc.), but its use in edible fi lms and coatings for application on fruits and vegetables has been very important because nowadays the consumers demand fruits and vegetables that are fresh, healthy, high quality and easy to prepare. A number of investigations have shown that the use of additives in edible fi lms and coatings improve its functionability and provide compounds for human health. However, it is necessary to continue research that can generate specifi c or tailor-made edible fi lms and coatings for each product with the best characteristics for preservation. In this review we present and analyze the concepts, progress and perspectives in the design and application of edible fi lms and coatings for fruits and vegetables in order to defi ne the challenges and opportunities that this topic of study in the fi eld of science, technology and food engineering.Los autores agradecen el apoyo fi nanciero brindado por el Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT), a la Dra.
