Capital Flows and Destabilizing Policy in Latin America
Motivated by the excessive macroeconomic volatility experienced in Latin America, we examine the possible contribution of monetary and fiscal policies to this outcome. In contrast with previous literature, we consider the possible simultaneity between policy and GDP growth by using GMM VAR econometric techniques. Additionally, we explore the direct impact international capital inflows have on these policies. Our evidence suggests that for the group of countries we consider, most practice destabilizing fiscal and monetary policy, and capital inflow consistently influences policy in a pro-cyclical direction.Fiscal and Monetary Policies, Capital Flows, Latin America
Finance and the Business Cycle: a Kalman Filter Approach with Markov Switching
This paper combines two popular econometric tools, the dynamic factor model and the Markov-Switching model, to consider three segments of the financial system- the stock market, debt, and money- and their contribution to US business cycles over the past four decades. The dynamic factor model identifies a composite factor index for each financial segment, and using Markov-switching models by Hamilton (1989) and Filardo (1994), this paper then estimates the effect of each segment index on business cycle behaviour. This reexamination of the finance-business cycle link provides results that prove strongest for the effect of stock market movements on business cycles.
Electric and magnetic fields effects on the excitonic properties of elliptic core-multishell quantum wires
The effect of eccentricity distortions of core-multishell quantum wires on
their electron, hole and exciton states is theoretically investigated. Within
the effective mass approximation, the Schrodinger equation is numerically
solved for electrons and holes in systems with single and double radial
heterostructures, and the exciton binding energy is calculated by means of a
variational approach. We show that the energy spectrum of a core-multishell
heterostructure with eccentricity distortions, as well as its magnetic field
dependence, are very sensitive to the direction of an externally applied
electric field, an effect that can be used to identify the eccentricity of the
system. For a double heterostructure, the eccentricities of the inner and outer
shells play an important role on the excitonic binding energy, specially in the
presence of external magnetic fields, and lead to drastic modifications in the

Rheological Behaviour of PP Nanocomposites by Extrusion Process
The effect of organophilic clay (C15A) in PP compatibilized polymer (PP/PP-g-MA) through rheological experimental results is presented. This study focusses on the description of the rheological behaviour of the organophilic layers along the screws of a twin screw extruder by melting process, varying the screw profile as well as the processing conditions, namely screw speed, temperature and feed rate. Different levels of dispersion were found along the screws for all conditions and positions analyzed by rheology. The qualitative analysis of the images obtained by transmission electron microscopy, reinforced the results. Furthermore, the effects of the processing conditions on dispersion of C15A layers along the screw profile are analyzed using multiple linear regression techniques. Quantum Topology Change in (2 + 1)d
The topology of orientable (2 + 1)d spacetimes can be captured by certain
lumps of non-trivial topology called topological geons. They are the
topological analogues of conventional solitons. We give a description of
topological geons where the degrees of freedom related to topology are
separated from the complete theory that contains metric (dynamical) degrees of
freedom. The formalism also allows us to investigate processes of quantum
topology change. They correspond to creation and annihilation of quantum geons.

Gauge fields in a string-cigar braneworld
In this work we investigate the properties of an Abelian gauge vector field
in a thin and in a smoothed string-like braneworld, the so-called string-cigar
model. This thick brane scenario satisfies the regularity conditions and it can
be regarded as an interior and exterior string-like solution. The source
undergoes a geometric Ricci flow which is connected to a variation of the bulk
cosmological constant. The Ricci flow changes the width and amplitude of the
massless mode at the brane core and recover the usual thin string-like behavior
at large distances. By numerical means we obtain the Kaluza-Klein (KK) spectrum
for both the thin brane and the string-cigar. It turns out that both models
exhibit a mass gap between the massless and the massive modes and between the
high and the low mass regimes. The KK modes are smooth near the brane and their
amplitude are enhanced by the string-cigar core. The analogue Schr\"odinger
potential is also tuned by the geometric flow.Comment: The discussion about the Kaluza-Klein spectrum of the gauge field was
