    Quantum fluctuations of D5dD_{5d} polarons on C60C_{60} molecules

    The dynamic Jahn-Teller splitting of the six equivalent D5dD_{5d} polarons due to quantum fluctuations is studied in the framework of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism. The tunneling induced level splittings are determined to be 2T1u⹁2T2u^2 T_{1u} \bigoplus ^2 T_{2u} and 1Ag⹁1Hg^1 A_g \bigoplus ^1 H_g for C601−C_{60}^{1-} and C602−C_{60}^{2-}, respectively, which should give rise to observable effects in experiments.Comment: REVTEX 3.0, 13 pages, to be published in Phys.     Thermodynamically stable noncomposite vortices in mesoscopic two-gap superconductors

    In mesoscopic two-gap superconductors with sizes of the order of the coherence length noncomposite vortices are found to be thermodynamically stable in a large domain of the T−HT - H phase diagram. In these phases the vortex cores of one condensate are spatially separated from the other condensate ones, and their respective distributions can adopt distinct symmetries. The appearance of these vortex phases is caused by a non-negligible effect of the boundary of the sample on the superconducting order parameter and represents therefore a genuine mesoscopic effect. For low values of interband Josephson coupling vortex patterns with L1≠L2L_1 \neq L_2 can arise in addition to the phases with L1=L2L_1 =L_2, where L1L_1 and L2L_2 are total vorticities in the two condensates. The calculations show that noncomposite vortices could be observed in thin mesoscopic samples of MgB2_{2}.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Europhysics Letter

    Unusual cause of mechanical ileus: abdominal cocoon syndrome

    A 38-year-old black male patient was admitted with diarrhea and nausea over two days and aggravating pain in the meso- and epigastium that resolved after urination. He had no surgical history and only an episode of pulmonary tuberculosis five years earlier, for which he was properly treated. Physical examination revealed a tender and distended abdomen with clangorous sounds. His temperature was 36.1°C. Routine laboratory blood analyses were normal. An abdominal ultrasound revealed diffuse distention of the small intestine. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed a conglomerate of dilated small bowel loops in the meso- and hypogastrium, suggestive for a supravesical mechanical small bowel obstruction. Peritoneal thickening was seen in the right epigastrium (Figure A, white arrow). An explorative laparoscopy revealed a whitish, thickened membrane encapsulating the small bowels as a ‘cocoon’ (Figure B). Extensive adhesiolysis released an intestinal kinking in the lower abdomen, just above the bladder. No resection was needed.     Assessing forest soil CO(2) efflux: an in situ comparison of four techniques.

    A dynamic, closed-chamber infrared gas analysis (IRGA) system (DC-1: CIRAS-1, PP-Systems, Hitchin, U.K.) was compared with three other systems for measuring soil CO(2) efflux: the soda lime technique (SL), the eddy correlation technique (EC), and another dynamic, closed-chamber IRGA system (DC-2: LI-6250, Li-Cor, Inc., Lincoln, NE). Among the four systems, the DC-1 systematically gave the highest flux rates. Relative to DC-1, SL, EC and DC-2 underestimated fluxes by 10, 36 and 46%, respectively. These large and systematic differences highlight uncertainties in comparing fluxes from different sites obtained with different techniques. Although the three chamber methods gave different results, the results were well correlated. The SL technique underestimated soil CO(2) fluxes compared with the DC-1 system, but both methods agreed well when the SL data were corrected for the underestimation at higher fluxes, indicating that inter-site comparisons are possible if techniques are properly crosscalibrated. The EC was the only system that was not well correlated with DC-1. Under low light conditions, EC values were similar to DC-1 estimates, but under high light conditions the EC system seriously underestimated soil fluxes. This was probably because of interference by the photosynthetic activity of a moss layer. Although below-canopy EC fluxes are not necessarily well suited for measuring soil CO(2) efflux in natural forest ecosystems, they provide valuable information about understory gas exchange when used in tandem with soil chambers

    Dynamical Jahn-Teller Effect and Berry Phase in Positively Charged Fullerene I. Basic Considerations

    We study the Jahn-Teller effect of positive fullerene ions 2^2C60+_{60}^{+} and 1^1C602+_{60}^{2+}. The aim is to discover if this case, in analogy with the negative ion, possesses a Berry phase or not, and what are the consequences on dynamical Jahn-Teller quantization. Working in the linear and spherical approximation, we find no Berry phase in 1^1C602+_{60}^{2+}, and presence/absence of Berry phase for coupling of one L=2L=2 hole to an L=4L=4/L=2L=2 vibration. We study in particular the special equal-coupling case (g2=g4g_2=g_4), which is reduced to the motion of a particle on a 5-dimensional sphere. In the icosahedral molecule, the final outcome assesses the presence/absence of a Berry phase of π\pi for the huh_u hole coupled to GgG_g/HhH_h vibrations.     Theory of Spontaneous Polarization of Endohedral Fullerenes

    A pseudo-Jahn-Teller model describing central atom distortions is proposed for endohedral fullerenes of the form A@C60_{60} where A is either a rare gas or a metal atom. A critical (dimensionless) coupling gcg_c is found, below which the symmetric configuration is stable and above which inversion symmetry is broken.     Jahn–Teller instability in cationic boron and carbon buckyballs B<sub>80</sub><sup>+</sup> and C<sub>60</sub><sup>+</sup>: a comparative study

    This paper investigates the Jahn–Teller effect in the icosahedral cation B80+ and compares the descent in symmetry with that in C60+. For both cations the icosahedral ground state is a 2Hu state, which exhibits a H [multiply sign in circle] (g ⊕ 2h) Jahn–Teller instability. A detailed construction of the potential energy surface of B80+ using different DFT methods including B3LYP/6-31G(d), VWN/6-31G(d), PBE/TZP and PBE/6-31G(d) shows that, contrary to C60+, which prefers D5d symmetry, the ground state of B80+ adopts S6 point group symmetry. A D3d structure is identified as a saddle point among the S6 minima of B80+. The distortion of D3d to S6 in B80+ is attributed to a superposition of Jahn–Teller and pseudo-Jahn–Teller effects. Imaginary modes, transforming as the gg representation, which are present in neutral icosahedral B80, form the dominant symmetry breaking active modes. The pronounced difference between the JT effects in the boron and carbon buckyball cations is due to the plasticity of the boron caps. The calculated Jahn–Teller stabilization of B80+ is nearly 1549 cm−1 (PBE/TZP), which exceeds the stabilization of 596 cm−1 computed for C60+ at the same level

    PCovR2:A flexible principal covariates regression approach to parsimoniously handle multiple criterion variables

    Principal covariates regression (PCovR) allows one to deal with the interpretational and technical problems associated with running ordinary regression using many predictor variables. In PCovR, the predictor variables are reduced to a limited number of components, and simultaneously, criterion variables are regressed on these components. By means of a weighting parameter, users can flexibly choose how much they want to emphasize reconstruction and prediction. However, when datasets contain many criterion variables, PCovR users face new interpretational problems, because many regression weights will be obtained and because some criteria might be unrelated to the predictors. We therefore propose PCovR2, which extends PCovR by also reducing the criteria to a few components. These criterion components are predicted based on the predictor components. The PCovR2 weighting parameter can again be flexibly used to focus on the reconstruction of the predictors and criteria, or on filtering out relevant predictor components and predictable criterion components. We compare PCovR2 to two other approaches, based on partial least squares (PLS) and principal components regression (PCR), that also reduce the criteria and are therefore called PLS2 and PCR2. By means of a simulated example, we show that PCovR2 outperforms PLS2 and PCR2 when one aims to recover all relevant predictor components and predictable criterion components. Moreover, we conduct a simulation study to evaluate how well PCovR2, PLS2 and PCR2 succeed in finding (1) all underlying components and (2) the subset of relevant predictor and predictable criterion components. Finally, we illustrate the use of PCovR2 by means of empirical data
