    Structure of a new dense amorphous ice

    The detailed structure of a new dense amorphous ice, VHDA, is determined by isotope substitution neutron diffraction. Its structure is characterized by a doubled occupancy of the stabilizing interstitial location that was found in high density amorphous ice, HDA. As would be expected for a thermally activated unlocking of the stabilizing "interstitial," the transition from VHDA to LDA (low-density amorphous ice) is very sharp. Although its higher density makes VHDA a better candidate than HDA for a physical manifestation of the second putative liquid phase of water, as for the HDA case, the VHDA to LDA transition also appears to be kinetically controlled

    Today a draftsman of wills should consider the increased risks of multiple deaths resulting from the hazards of modern living in general and travel by airplane and automobile in particular. He should be aware of the possibility of the client\u27s death with his intended beneficiary within a short period, in a common disaster, or under circumstances in which there is no evidence of survivorship. The failure to provide for these possibilities may lead to the frustration of a testamentary disposition, as a beneficiary must survive the testator in order to take under the testator\u27s will.\u27 Further, the advent of the marital deduction provisions in the Internal Revenue Code makes a consideration of these possibilities a practical sine qua non to the drafting of any testamentary plan involving a husband and wife. These possibilities will herein be considered from the standpoint of the common law, applicable statutes and testamentary provisions

    Reduction of temazepam to diazepam and lorazepam to delorazepam during enzymatic hydrolysis

    It has been previously reported that treatment of urinary oxazepam by commercial β-glucuronidase enzyme preparations, from Escherichia coli, Helix pomatia and Patella vulgata, results in production of nordiazepam (desmethyldiazepam) artefact. In this study, we report that this unusual reductive transformation also occurs in other benzodiazepines with a hydroxyl group at the C3 position such as temazepam and lorazepam. As determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis, all three enzyme preparations were found capable of converting urinary temazepam into diazepam following enzymatic incubation and subsequent liquid-liquid extraction procedures. For example, when H. pomatia enzymes were used with incubation conditions of 18 h and 50 °C, the percentage conversion, although small, was significant-approximately 1% (0.59-1.54%) in both patient and spiked blank urines. Similarly, using H. pomatia enzyme under these incubation conditions, a reductive transformation of urinary lorazepam into delorazepam (chlordesmethyldiazepam) occurred. These findings have both clinical and forensic implications. Detection of diazepam or delorazepam in biological samples following enzyme treatment should be interpreted with care. © 2011 Springer-Verlag

    Micrometer-sized Water Ice Particles for Planetary Science Experiments: Influence of Surface Structure on Collisional Properties

    Models and observations suggest that ice-particle aggregation at and beyond the snowline dominates the earliest stages of planet formation, which therefore is subject to many laboratory studies. However, the pressure–temperature gradients in protoplanetary disks mean that the ices are constantly processed, undergoing phase changes between different solid phases and the gas phase. Open questions remain as to whether the properties of the icy particles themselves dictate collision outcomes and therefore how effectively collision experiments reproduce conditions in protoplanetary environments. Previous experiments often yielded apparently contradictory results on collision outcomes, only agreeing in a temperature dependence setting in above ≈210 K. By exploiting the unique capabilities of the NIMROD neutron scattering instrument, we characterized the bulk and surface structure of icy particles used in collision experiments, and studied how these structures alter as a function of temperature at a constant pressure of around 30 mbar. Our icy grains, formed under liquid nitrogen, undergo changes in the crystalline ice-phase, sublimation, sintering and surface pre-melting as they are heated from 103 to 247 K. An increase in the thickness of the diffuse surface layer from ≈10 to ≈30 Å (≈2.5 to 12 bilayers) proves increased molecular mobility at temperatures above ≈210 K. Because none of the other changes tie-in with the temperature trends in collisional outcomes, we conclude that the surface pre-melting phenomenon plays a key role in collision experiments at these temperatures. Consequently, the pressure–temperature environment, may have a larger influence on collision outcomes than previously thought

    The hydration structure of Cu2+: More tetrahedral than octahedral?

    A comprehensive multi-technique approach has been used to address the controversial question of the preferred geometric form of the Cu2+ aqua-ion hydration shell. A combination of H/D isotopic substitution neutron scattering and X-ray scattering has been used to refine atomistic models of 0.5 m and 2.0 m solutions of Cu(ClO4)2, that have also been constrained to simultaneously reproduce detailed local structure information about the cation environment obtained by X-ray Absorption spectroscopy. The adoption of the Empirical Potential Structure Refinement (EPSR) technique as a single unified analytical framework minimises the chances for biasing the result in favour of a specific pre-conceived outcome. The results are consistent with an average coordination for each Cu2+ ion of 4.5 ± 0.6 water molecules that matches the more recent picture of five-fold coordination in a 2.0 m solution, but interestingly this combined study highlights that the preferred local geometry of the ion sites is found to have a mixed character of tetrahedral, trigonal bipyramidal and octahedral components. A further point to note is that this new model adds support to a largely ignored result in the literature relating to the linear electric field effect induced g-shifts observed in the electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of glassy Cu2+ complexes (Peisach and Mims, Chem. Phys. Lett., 1976, 37, 307–310) that first highlighted the importance of tetrahedral distortions in the cation's hydration shell structure

    Neutron Scattering Analysis of Water’s Glass Transition and Micropore Collapse in Amorphous Solid Water

    The question of the nature of water’s glass transition has continued to be disputed over many years. Here we use slow heating scans (0.4 K min−1) of compact amorphous solid water deposited at 77 K and an analysis of the accompanying changes in the small-angle neutron scattering signal, to study mesoscale changes in the ice network topology. From the data we infer the onset of rotational diffusion at 115 K, a sudden switchover from nondiffusive motion and enthalpy relaxation of the network at 121 K, in excellent agreement with the glass transition onset deduced from heat capacity and dielectric measurements. This indicates that water’s glass transition is linked with long-range transport of water molecules on the time scale of minutes and, thus, clarifies its nature. Furthermore, the slow heating rates combined with the high crystallization resistance of the amorphous sample allow us to identify the glass transition end point at 136 K, which is well separated from the crystallization onset at 144 K—in contrast to all earlier experiments in the field

    A case of malignant hyperlactaemic acidosis appearing upon treatment with the mono-carboxylase transporter 1 inhibitor AZD3965

    A 47-year-old man with metastatic melanoma presented with refractory hyperlactaemic acidosis following the first dose of the mono-carboxylase transporter 1 inhibitor AZD3965 within a "first time in man" clinical trial. The mechanism of the agent and the temporal relationship suggested that this event was potentially drug related and recruitment was suspended. However, urinary metabolomics showed extensive abnormalities even prior to drug administration, leading to investigations for an underlying metabolic disorder. The lack of clinical symptoms from the elevated lactate and low blood glucose suggested a diagnosis of "hyper-Warburgism", where the high tumour burden was associated with extensive glucose uptake and lactate efflux from malignant cells, and the subsequent impact on blood biochemistry. This was supported by an FDG-PET scan showing extensive glucose uptake in numerous metastases and lack of uptake in the brain. A review of the literature showed 16 case reports of "hyper-Warburgism" in non-haematological malignancies, none of them with melanoma, with most associated with a poor outcome. The patient was treated symptomatically, but died 2 months later. The development of AZD3965 continues with the exclusion of patients with elevated plasma lactate at screening added to the protocol as a safety measure.     The Fermat-Torricelli problem in normed planes and spaces

    We investigate the Fermat-Torricelli problem in d-dimensional real normed spaces or Minkowski spaces, mainly for d=2. Our approach is to study the Fermat-Torricelli locus in a geometric way. We present many new results, as well as give an exposition of known results that are scattered in various sources, with proofs for some of them. Together, these results can be considered to be a minitheory of the Fermat-Torricelli problem in Minkowski spaces and especially in Minkowski planes. This demonstrates that substantial results about locational problems valid for all norms can be found using a geometric approach
