Parental rearing style as a predictor of attachment and psychosocial adjustment during young adulthood
Parental rearing-styles are crucial for psychosocial adjustment both during childhood and adulthood. The current study examined whether: (a) parental rearing-styles predicted psychosocial adjustment in young-adulthood, (b) this relationship was mediated by attachment styles , and ( c ) gender differences occur in these relationships. Two hundred and forty (103 male and 132 female) university students completed measures assessing parental rearing-style , current attachment style, romantic relationship satisfaction, friendship quality, self-esteem, and social competence. Multigroup structural equation modelling, conducted separately by gender, revealed that parental rearing-style predicted psychosocial adjustment during young-adulthood. Further, there was also evidence of gender differences and that self-models and other-models of attachment mediated this relationship. Together, these findings reinforce the importance of perceived parental rearing-style for subsequent psychosocial adjustment
Quantum disorder due to singlet formation: The Plaquette lattice
I study the order/disorder transition due to singlet formation in a quantum
spin system by means of exact diagonalization. The systems is build by spin 1/2
on a two-dimensional square lattice with two different kinds of
antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions. The interaction J_p connects 4
nearest neighbor spins on a plaquette. The interaction J_n connects the
plaquettes with each other. If J_p=J_n the systems reduces to the simple square
lattice case. If one of the interactions becomes sufficiently larger then the
other the purely quantum effect of singlet formation drives the system into a
disordered phase with only short range correlations in the plaquettes and a
spin gap. I study the transition point by evaluating the spin gap and spin-spin
correlations. I compare the results with previously calculated data from a
non-linear sigma model approach, spin wave theory and series expansion
calculations. I confirm a critical value of J_n \approx 0.6 for the quantum
phase transition point.Comment: 5 pages (Revtex), 7 figure

THE INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT) IN DISASTER RESPONSE
Disaster management is a complex practice that relies on access to and the usability of critical information to develop strategies for effective decision-making. The emergence of wearable internet of things (IoT) technology has attracted the interests of several major industries, making it one of the fastest-growing technologies to date. This thesis asks, How can disaster management incorporate wearable IoT technology in operations and decision-making practices in disaster response? How IoT is applied in other prominent industries, including construction, manufacturing and distribution, the Department of Defense, and public safety, provides a basis for furthering its application to challenges affecting agency coordination. The critical needs of disaster intelligence in the context of hurricanes, structural collapses, and wildfires are scrutinized to identify gaps that wearable technology could address in terms of information-sharing in multi-agency coordination and the decision-making practices that routinely occur in disaster response. Last, the specifics of wearable technology from the perspective of the private consumer and commercial industry illustrate its potential to improve disaster response but also acknowledge certain limitations including technical capabilities and information privacy and security.Civilian, Virginia Beach Fire Department / FEMA - USAR VATF-2Approved for public release. Fast neutron induced resistivity changes in order-disorder FeāAl
Resistivity measurements were made of ordered, disordered and intermediate states of order-disordered specimens of FeāAl while being irradiated by neutrons. All the specimens were irradiated at ambient temperature, approximately 35Ā°C in a modified Bulk Shielding Swimming Pool type reactor. The ordered and near ordered specimens increased in resistivity indicating disordering whereas the disordered and near disordered specimens decreased in resistivity indicating an ordering process was occuring [sic]. By extrapolation, an equilibrium condition was determined and estimated at 130-135 micro-ohms-cm resistivity that would remain constant during irradiation because the ordering and disordering affects of neutron irradiation would be in equilibrium --Abstract, page ii
Does It Get Any Worse Than Acne? It Does, Actually. An In-Depth Review of Accutaneās Regulatory History.
Isotretinoin, most often recognized by the brand name AccutaneĀ®, is regarded by many patients and prescribers as the miracle cure for acne. Its unsurpassed efficacy is paired with serious risk of adverse events and birth defects, which poses ethical questions regarding its safety and necessity. Its regulatory history established precedent in Food and Drug Administration Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies and brought awareness to the sharp dangers of teratogenic drug use.
This medication came as a breakthrough solution to patients that suffered years of unsuccessful regimens for the treatment of acne vulgaris. Some question the risk-benefit evaluation of such a toxic drug for acne. It was noted in Archives of Family Medicine that āalthough acne is not a life-threatening disease, it has significant physical and psychological ramifications such as permanent scarring, poor self-image, social inhibition, depression and anxietyā (Thiboutot). Significant health implications press the need for such an effective drug. AccutaneĀ® and isotretinoin generic drugs have changed the lives of over two million patients (AOCD).
Despite the remarkable success, the significant dangers must not be overlooked. Measures have been put in place such as a Black Box warning, categorization as Category X pregnancy risk, and the REMS program āiPLEDGEā, but significant adverse events and pregnancy issues continue to be reported. Regulatory history and extreme legal backlash quickly caused the brand-name AccutaneĀ® by Hoffmann-La Roche to be taken off the market, but numerous isotretinoin generic formulations continue to be profitable and prescribed to patients daily. Although many still confuse isotretinoin drugs and refer to all of these medications as āAccutaneĀ®ā, this drug is no longer distributed or prescribed. When a patient says they are taking āAccutaneĀ®ā, they are most likely receiving an isotretinoin drug almost identical to AccutaneĀ®, but produced by a different company. The household name recognition that AccutaneĀ® achieved after litigation remains in dermatological vocabulary although it has been discontinued.
The REMS of isotretinoin aims to (1) to prevent fetal exposure and (2) to inform prescribers, pharmacists, and patients about isotretinoinās serious risks and safe-use conditions (FDA). The stringent regulations of this drug and its implications on the pharmacological safety environment warrants scrutinous evaluation and review. How has the FDA, the pharmaceutical industry, and the healthcare industry, in general, responded to high risk drugs (like AccutaneĀ®) with significant adverse events in recent years
