    Robust Adaptive Beamforming for General-Rank Signal Model with Positive Semi-Definite Constraint via POTDC

    The robust adaptive beamforming (RAB) problem for general-rank signal model with an additional positive semi-definite constraint is considered. Using the principle of the worst-case performance optimization, such RAB problem leads to a difference-of-convex functions (DC) optimization problem. The existing approaches for solving the resulted non-convex DC problem are based on approximations and find only suboptimal solutions. Here we solve the non-convex DC problem rigorously and give arguments suggesting that the solution is globally optimal. Particularly, we rewrite the problem as the minimization of a one-dimensional optimal value function whose corresponding optimization problem is non-convex. Then, the optimal value function is replaced with another equivalent one, for which the corresponding optimization problem is convex. The new one-dimensional optimal value function is minimized iteratively via polynomial time DC (POTDC) algorithm.We show that our solution satisfies the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) optimality conditions and there is a strong evidence that such solution is also globally optimal. Towards this conclusion, we conjecture that the new optimal value function is a convex function.     Negative-U properties for substitutional Au in Si

    The isolated substitutional gold impurity in bulk silicon is studied in detail using electronic structure calculations based on density-functional theory. The defect system is found to be a non-spin-polarized negative-U centre, thus providing a simple solution to the long-standing debate over the electron paramagnetic resonance signal for gold in silicon. There is an excellent agreement (within 0.03 eV) between the well-established experimental donor and acceptor levels and the predicted stable charge state transition levels, allowing for the unambiguous assignment of the two experimental levels to the (1+/1-) and (1-/3-) transitions, respectively, in contrast to previously held assumptions about the system.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    We consider a class of operator-induced norms, acting as finite-dimensional surrogates to the L2 norm, and study their approximation properties over Hilbert subspaces of L2 . The class includes, as a special case, the usual empirical norm encountered, for example, in the context of nonparametric regression in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHS). Our results have implications to the analysis of M-estimators in models based on finite-dimensional linear approximation of functions, and also to some related packing problems
