Enhancement of field-induced strain by la substitution in epitaxial Pb (Zr,Ti) O3 films grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition
High-quality epitaxial La-substituted Pb (Zr0.65 Ti0.35) O3 films were grown on (100)c SrRu O3 ∥ (100)c SrTi O3 substrates at 600 °C using metal organic chemical vapor deposition. Single-phase perovskite was obtained for La (Pb+La) ratios ranging from 0 to 33%; La ions were selectively substituted at the Pb sites when the La (Pb+La) ratio was 6% or less and were substituted at both A and B sites when it was greater than 6%. Both the remanent polarization and coercive field monotonically decreased with the La (Pb+La) ratio, and the maximum field-induced strain was around 6%. This means that La substitution enhances the field-induced strain
Does Internet Use Crowd Out Face-To-Face Ties? Empirical Evidence from the Cumulative General Social Survey Data
This study examines if Internet use crowds out or facilitates face-to-face ties byanalyzing the cumulative General Social Survey data. Assumed is that the impact of Internet use varies according to types of Internet services and modes of Internet use. GSS data show that face-to-face engagements measured in spending a social evening, friends, and relatives staying incontact with, and voluntary membership remained almost unchanged for the past four decades. No sharp slash or jump was observed before and after the late 1990s. Spending a social evening with relatives, neighbors, and friends are not influenced by Internet use regardless of whetherthey are email, WWW, or deliberative and entertaining purposes. Emailing and deliberative use of WWW are positively related to the number of friends and relatives keeping in touch with byface-to-face, meetings or events, telephone, and U.S. postal mail, while the time spent for WWW has the negative effect. Finally, voluntary membership is positively associated with deliberative use of WWW and not with email and WWW use for entertainment. The Internet is not necessarily a technology culprit of the decline in social capital but its impact depends how effectively people use for society and themselves.departmental bulletin pape
The Web Accessibility Crisis of Korea's Electronic Government: Fatal Consequences of the Digital Signature Act and Public Key Certificate
Korea's e-government ranked top in e-government benchmarking for the past five years but showed relatively lower scores in Web accessibility. As a result of the Digital Signature Act, public key certificate was introduced and digital certificate software was developed using de facto technology standards, Microsoft ActiveX. Government, certificate authorities, and certificate consumers all overlooked the implications of using Microsoft standards and ignored criticisms of those who do not use Microsoft products. Government failed to implement digital signature policy successfully. Its consequences include unbelievable Microsoft monopoly with almost 99 percent market shares of Microsoft products, chronic addiction to Microsoft standards, bad computing practices, and fatal Web accessibility problems. ActiveX should be removed immediately to support diverse operating systems and Web browsers. Eventually current client-side certificate should be switched to server-side system. This paper calls for careful evaluation of Korea's e-government.departmental bulletin pape
