Decolonizing Theory and Praxis: Principles For Collaboration Between Native American Communities and Government Run Recreation
Mesa Verde National Park is renovating the exhibits in its Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum to incorporate the perspectives of the Native American tribes associated with the land within the Park. Through work on the project, I became aware of specific difficulties that occur when U.S. Government entities attempt to collaborate with Native American tribes. This thesis investigates what practices are beneficial or harmful to this type of collaboration. Through three case studies of public land collaborations between the U.S. Government and Native American tribes, principles are extracted based on what did or did not work within those collaborations. This thesis also identifies forms of decolonial praxis exhibited by each site that may be imitated by other government run sites that seek to decolonization. This analysis yielded four major principles for collaboration, and three major forms of decolonial praxis:
1. Trust is understandably delicate.
2. The tribes are insiders telling their story and sharing their space with outsiders.
3. Truly collaborating and respecting tribal knowledge works!
4. Intentions don’t matter: Amend the situation and work to understand the tribal point of view.
1. Decolonize through tribal management of land and resources.
2. Decolonize through interpretation
3. Decolonize through architecture and design.</p
