This study, based on an ethnographic field-research at a 'phuong(ward) in Hanoi, probes the nature of the state-society relations of an urban community in Vietnam. Among many factors that explain the social differentiation of the people within the ward, 'nativeness' is a key factor that gives rise to the demarcation of the groups in the imagined homogeneous community. In this respect, the 'nativeness identity' is an important cultural resource that aids mediation of the formal and informal positions of the two conflicting concerns of the state and local people. The dominant debate surrounding the current Vietnamese state-society relations sets dichotomy and discontinuity between the state and social forces as the initial premise. However, I have found that in a 'traditional village' (Lang Dai Yen), the 7th resident cluster(cum 7), there exists no salient disjunction between the state and the society. In fact, both of these forces co-exist congruously at the 'local elite action' level. Most cadres(canbo) of local administrative machinery and leaders of the party-state's mass organizations are, simultaneously, agents of state policy and important figures of the local traditional community. Cultural and moral persuasions by the 'native'(nguoi goc) leaders are employed predominately for everyday state management at-ward and below-ward level, as opposed to the official party-state tools, such as ward party-branch, party-cell, ward people's committee. Paying close attention to the concept of "mediation space," I elucidate the continuity of the state and the society at the local level. In the sense, I support the reciprocal view of state and society, in which society exists within the state and the state within the society, to understand the nature of state-society relations in post-socialist Vietnam
