    Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate the possibility of substitution of the zonography for the full-mouth periapical radiography in aspect of radiation protection. Materials and Methods: Rando phantom and LiF TLD chips were used for dosimetry. The absorbed doses at brain, skin above the TMJ. parotid gland. bone marrow in the mandibular body. and thyroid gland during the full-mouth periapical radiography. panoramic radiography. and zonography were measured. Resul ts: From the zonography. the absorbed doses to the brain. the skin over the TMJ. and the parotid gland were relatively high. but the absorbed doses to the bone marrow in the mandibular body and. especially. the thyroid gland were very low.     Accuracy of CT image in measuring the mandible for implant : Effect of mandibular position and gantry angle

    We used five adult dog mandibles embedded in resin block and six different cross-sectional planes for each mandible were choosen. According to the angle of mandibular occulsal plane to vertical plane(mandibular angle) and gantry angle of CT machine, we classified 4 experimental groups and 1 control group. The control group images were taken at the mandibular angel 0º and gantry angle 0º . The experimental images were taken at the mandibular angle 15º and gantry angle 0º(group 1); 30º and 0º(group 2); 15º and 15º(group 3); 30º and 30º(group 4), respectively. Using the reformatted cross-sectional images, the distance from the mandibular canal to the alveolar crest and the distance from the mandibular canal to the buccal cortex and to the lingual cortex was measured and compared. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The distance from the mandibular canal to the alveolar crest of group 1 and 2 was larger than control group, but the distance of group 3 and 4 was smaller. The distance from the mandibular canal to the buccal cortex and to the lingual cortex of all experimental groups was smaller than control group. 2. The distance from the mandibular canal to the alveolar crest showed the largest difference from control group in all experimental groups, especially in group 2 and 4(p<0.05). 3. In the distance from the mandibular canal to the alveolar crest, the number of deviation value under 1 ㎜ was 20 in group 3 and was 11 in group 2 and 4, respectively. 4. The deviation value of the distance from the mandibular canal to the buccal cortex and to the lingual cortex was under 1 ㎜ in most cases.이 논문은 1997년도 서울대학교병원 일반연구비(04-95-44) 지원에 의해 이루어진 것임

    Assessment of apical root resorption using digital subtraction radiography

    Purpose : This study was performed to compare the diagnostic ability of conventional intraoral radiographs with that of digital subtraction image and to assess the quantifying ability of digital subtraction image for simulated apical root resorption Materials and Methods : Conventional intraoral radiographs and digital images of ten sound maxillary central incisors and those with simulated apical root resorption were taken with varying horizontal and vertical angulations of the x-ray beam. The diagnostic accuracy to detect the lesion was evaluated on conventional intraoral radiographs and digital subtraction images by ROC analysis. The amount of simulated apical root resorption was also estimated on the reconstruction images by Emago/sup (R)/ and compared with actual amount of tooth loss using paired t-test. Results: The diagnostic accuracy of conventional intraoral radiographs to detect the apical root resorption was low (ROC area = 0.6446), and the sensitivity and the specificity of digital subtraction images were 100%, respectively. The calculated amounts of apical root resorption showed no statistically significant difference with the actual amounts of the lesion (p>0.05). Conclusion: Digital subtraction radiography is powerful tool to detect the small apical root resorption, and quantitative analysis of small amounts of the lesion can be evaluated by digital subtraction radiography.이 연구는 1999년도 서울대학교 발전기금 일반학술연구비 지원으로 의한 것임

    Effect of Irradiation on Apoptosis, Cell Cycle Arrest and Calcified Nodule Formation of Rat Calvarial Osteoblast

    Purpose: The study was aimed to detect the induction of apoptosis, cell cycle arrest and calcified nodule formation after irradiation on primarily cultured osteoblasts. Materials and Methods: Using rat calvarial osteoblasts, the effects of irradiation on apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, and calcified nodule formation were studied. The single irradiation of 10 and 20 Gy was done with 5.38 Gy/min dose rate using the l37Cs cell irradiator at 4th and 14th day of culture. Apoptosis induction and cell cycle arrest were assayed by the flowcytometry at 1, 2, 3, and 4 days after irradiation. The formation of calcified nodules was observed by alizarin red staining at 1, 3, 10, 14 days after irradiation at 4th day of culture, and at 1, 4, 5 days after irradiation at 14th day of culture. Results: Apoptosis was not induced by 10 or 20 Gy independent of irradiation and culture period. Irradiation did not induced G1 arrest in post-irradiated ostedblasts. After irradiation at 4th-day of culture, G2 arrest was induced but it was not statistically significant after irradiation at 14th-day of culture. In the case of irradiated cells at 4th day of culture, calcified nodules were not formed and at 14th-day of culture after irradiation, calcified nodule formation did not affected. Conclusion: Taken together, these results suggest that irradiation at the dose of 10-20 Gy would not affect apoptosis induction of osteoblasts. Cell cycle and calcified nodule formation were influenced by the level of differentiation of osteblasts

    The effect of mandibular position and gantry angle on the evaluation of implant site with implant CT

    Purpose: The altered gantry angle during scanning for some multiplanar reconstruction CT program (CT/MPR) may cause distortion of the image. The aim of this study was to ascertain whether there is a image distortion in a reformatted image when the gantry and the object are equally inclined using ToothPix and DentaScan program. Materials and Methods: A resin block model with four cylindrical holes and a human dry mandible were used. Two MPR software packages, ToothPix and DentaScan program, were used for reformatted panoramic images. The block and the gantry were equally inclined at 0°, 15°, and 30°. Results: With ToothPix program, a resin block model with empty holes and a dry mandible showed inclined images in the reformatted panoramic image. Increasing the gantry angle, the depth and inclination of the holes were increased in the reformatted central panoramic images. However, a resin block model with gutta perch a in its holes and a dry mandible with a wire in its mandibular canal didn't show image distortion. With DentaScan program, image distortion was not seen in any situation. Conclusion: ToothPix program may distort the reformatted image when the gantry angle is not at zero degrees. However, with DentaScan program, the patient may be positioned comfortably and the gantry can be adjusted to the patient positioning.이 논문은 1998년도 서울대학교병원 일반 연구비(04-1998-053) 지원에 의해 이루어진 것임
