Focusing on two government-initiated policies, "New Towns Renovation Project" and "The 4 Major Rivers Project," this study examines the heterogeneity of economic voters.
As a contribution to economic voting studies, this thesis underlines the factors of assessment of economic prospects and the political-institutional context. Previous studies showed a robust role of economic interests in determining voters' decisions, especially with regard to pursuit of their pocketbook interests. However, it has typically been assumed that voters would form a homogeneous group. This study suggests that this baseline assumption needs to be revised, especially because each voter would react differently based on one's economic situation. This study suggests that voter groups are becoming much more heterogeneous than suggestions of previous studies. Furthermore, the concept of "clarity of responsibility" - how the divided government on different levels of governance disperses the reward or punishment for economic conditions - has not widely been used to analyze voting behavior within individual countries.
In order to find out the heterogeneous voting behaviors in South Korea, this thesis scrutinizes two elections in South Korea: 2008 general election and 2010 local election. Aggregated electoral return data was analyzed to the precinct level. In addition to the aggregated electoral return data, various survey data was analyzed to complement the aggregated electoral return data. Analyses performed on the aggregated data suggest the emergence of heterogeneous voter groups, suggesting this approach of using multiple dataset have instrumental methodological implications.
This study finds out that voters who have real-estates clearly reward or punish the incumbent party in the most cases and that the proportion of incumbents who belong to the ruling party induce the various degrees voters assign responsibility to the ruling party. The results clearly indicate the heterogeneity of economic voters and the institutional effect. Thus, this study may contribute to broaden the scope of economic voting studies in South Korea, where regionalism has been previously regarded as a key factor affecting voting behavior.Maste
Gender and Race in the Pocahontas Narratives
This is a study of Pocahontas nanratives which incIude the historical analyses, populal' novels and film. English writers have given several different accounts of the same native American, Pocahontas for 400 years. The various stories of Pocahootas have reflected the Americans' perception of race and gender. Pocahontas did oot leave the record. It was the Englishmen who wrote about the Pocahootas when she was alive. From the beginning, the documents about Pocahontas exhibit the White men's perspectives rather than her thoughts and intentions. BeΓng taken prisoner by Englishmen, Pocahontas herself was used to the advantage of Englishmen. After her death, she became famous for her rescue of Captain John Smith, the reality of which has been in doubt among the scholars. in the West frontier, Pocahontas naltatives gave the courage and confidence to the people who were Γn fear ofthe natives. 1n the mΓddle of the 19th century the South used the Pocahontas narrativle and Jamestown history to claim the or less and legitimacy of American history against the Massachusetts Pilgrims. From the latter half of the 20th century, multicullturalism and feminΓsm influence the narratives. Disney's animation film Pocahontas reflects more or less the public discourses on race, gender and environment. But the film neglects the historical fact that Pocahontas was captured by Englishmen to be a prisoner for a long tΓme. To overcome the White mens ethnocentrism, Γt Γs necessary for American society to acknowledge the European AmericansvΓolent and barbarous history. Not a myth but the hΓstory of Pocahontas could be the way to face it
