Self Care Behavior of Hemodialysis Patients
Purpose: The purpose of this study was two folds: first, to identify the level of self care behavior of the hemodialysis patients and second, to find the correlation between the self care behavior and the physiologic indices. Method: The subjects were 52 hemodialysis patients, male and female, who have regularly received hemodialysis dialysis at the Dialysis Room in a leading teaching hospital, Seoul. The patients responded to the self care behavior questionnaires including their socio-demographic characteristics. The respondents have regularly recorded the self care log book. The physiologic indices, clinical characteristics related to the disease and hemodialysis were collected by the chart review. Result: The mean score of the self care behavior was 3.46. The mean score of the self care behavior on categories demonstrated as follows: medication 4.29, fistula management 4.13, management of physical problem 3.71, diet 3.28, exercise and rest 3.22, blood pressure and body weight management 2.97 and social adjustment 2.05 in order. Thirty patients managed discomfort of their fistula. Eleven patients took exercise for 0.5-1 hr/week. Thirty patients measured their body weight daily and thirty two measured their blood pressure daily. The score of self care behavior was significantly correlated with the mean weight gains between the dialysis sessions(r=-.312, p=.05). The mean weight gains between dialysis sessions was found to be high as the level of serum phosphorus and potassium increased(r=-.316, p=.05, r=-.465, p=.01). Conclusion: The result suggests that nursing intervention to the hemodialysis patients to improve self care behavior should be encouraged and further developed

Correlations in Appearance, Job-seeking Stress and Job-seeking Anxiety in Undergraduates according to Gender Differences
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the differences between the level of satisfaction and concern regarding appearance according to gender, the importance of appearance in job interviews, and the influence appearance has on job-seeking stress and anxiety under the ever-increasing pressure on students to secure employment so that appropriate psychological interventions can be provided to undergraduates. Methods: The survey was conducted on 170 third and fourth year undergraduates in Gyeonggi province from August 31st to September 6th, 2012 to figure out the correlations and differences in variables of appearance satisfaction and concern, and the importance of appearance in job interviews and job-seeking stress and anxiety according to the differences in gender. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent t-test, two-way ANOVA, and Pearsons correlation analysis. Results: 1. There was difference between the genders for appearance satisfaction and concern. The level of satisfaction was higher in male students while concerns regarding appearance were higher in female students. There was no gender difference regarding the importance of appearance in job interviews, job-seeking stress, and job-seeking anxiety. 2. For the concerns in appearance, there was a significant difference between the genders in appearance management, and gender and the importance of appearance in job interviews showed significant interactive effects. Stress and anxiety from job-seeking did not show significant differences between the genders, but there were common significant interactive effects between gender and grades, gender and employment, and gender and the importance of appearance in job interviews. 3. Both male and female students showed higher job-seeking stress as their job-seeking anxiety was higher. Job-seeking anxiety was higher in male students who had higher concern in appearance, and in female students who placed more emphasis on the importance of appearance in job interviews. Conclusion: As female students perceived appearance in job interviews as important more than male students, their job-seeking anxiety was higher, while male students who showed higher concern in appearance also showed higher level of anxiety in job-seeking. As job-seeking anxiety was higher, job-seeking stress was also higher according to the entire participants, based on this result, methods to decrease job-seeking anxiety should be suggested
University Nursing Students Empathic Ability and Cultural Competency
Purpose: This study aimed to identify the relationship between empathic ability and cultural competency in university nursing students. Methods: This correlational study involved 139 second- and third-year nursing students. They completed a 3-part questionnaire comprising items assessing general characteristics (9), empathic ability
(30), and cultural competency (27). Results: The mean scores for empathy and cultural competency were 106.0 and 78.7, respectively. Empathy did not differ significantly by general characteristics. However, cultural competency significantly differed by foreign language skill. Additionally, a significant correlation was found between the nursing students empathic ability and cultural competency. Conclusion: Nursing students empathic ability and cultural competency need to be enhanced to ensure the provision of high-quality nursing services to foreign patients
Factors Influencing the Cognitive Degree of Dry Eyes in Nursing Students
Purpose: This study aimed to identify the factors that influence the cognitive degree of dry eyes in nursing students. Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study. Data was collected using self-administered questionnaires (cognitive degree of dry eyes, Standard Patients Evaluation of Eye Dryness [SPEED] questionnaire, and McMonnies questionnaire) from 233 nursing students of E university. Results: The mean scores for the cognitive degree of dry eyes, SPEED, and McMonnies were 21.43, 8.02, and 6.39, respectively. The cognitive degree of dry eyes was found to have a significantly positive correlation with McMonnies and SPEED scores. Additionally, the factors that influenced the cognitive degree of dry eyes among nursing students were hours of using smart phones, McMonnies score, and the SPEED score. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that interventions need to developed and applied to reduce and control the cognitive degree of dry eyes among nursing students
