Computer Simulation Studies of Chain Conformations and Dynamics in Polymer Melts: Effects of Topology and Interfaces

In this dissertation, the effects of topological constraints and interface on the conformations and dynamic properties of polyethylene ring and linear chains in melts have been investigated by employing atomistic molecular dynamic simulation method. In pure melts, we observe the faster diffusion for rings than linear chains in entangled regime. However, the dynamic similarities between rings and linear chains in both unentangled and entangled regime have been found from the analysis of dynamic structure factors, chain-length dependence of diffusion coefficients and time dependent monomer displacements. The topological interactions between ring and linear chains affect the motion of rings, with minor contribution to linear chains, resulting in the slower diffusion of rings than linear chains. The measured diffusion coefficients and displacements indicate that the motion of rings in the entangled linear matrices is slower than the reptation mechanism of entangled linear chains probably due to the trapping effect. From the analysis of the longest relaxation times, it is found that the reorientation process for rings is decoupled from the diffusion process in the entangled matrix, regardless of the matrix chain architecture. These results strongly point towards the importance of Constraint-release mechanism in general. Interfacial characterization of ring and linear PE chains in melts under confinement shows that geometrical confinement becomes important in the entangled melt dynamics at the intermediate time scale while the attractive surface interactions are dominant factors for interfacial structures and the chain dynamics at short times.Docto

A Constitutional Analysis on the Supreme Courts Decision of the Withdrawal of Life-Sustaining Care

말기환자의 연명치료의 중단에 관한 이번 대법원결정은 입법이 없는 상황에서 의식이 없는 말기 성인환자에 대한 연명치료의 중단이 허용될 수 있고 이를 위 한 허용기준을 명시적으로 밝힌 최초의 판결이라는 점에 의의가 있다. 특히 환자 의 의사가 명확히 사전에 표시되지 않은 상황에서 의사추정의 방식에 의해서도 환자의 의도는 확인될 수 있다는 점을 밝힌 점도 중요한 판단 부분이다. 사전 의사표시를 하지 않은 경우에도 말기환자의 인간의 존엄과 가치를 존중하여야 한다는 헌법적 요구에 근거하여 자기결정권을 실현할 수 있어야 한다는 점 그리 고 이런 경우 환자의 연명치료의 중단에 대한 자기결정권은 추정적 의사의 방식 으로만 확인될 수밖에 없다는 점에서 이를 허용한 것은 타당하다. 그렇지만 대 법원이 환자의 추정적 의사를 확인하는 과정에 있어 발생할 수 있는 문제점에 대해 아무런 절차적 보장장치를 제시하지 않은 점은 수긍하기 어렵다. 연명치료 의 중단을 구하는 민사소송에서 의사추정을 위한 증거의 부정확성과 오염 가능 성을 차단하기 위해서 법관의 직권강화보다는 입증수준을 제고하는 방식이 적합 하다. 이와 같은 절차적 안전장치를 통해 환자의 의사를 추정할 수 있는 정확하 고 폭넓은 증거가 제출될 수 있어 환자의 의사를 추정하는 절차가 정당화될 수 있게 된다. 그런데 대상판결은 이런 측면을 고려하지 않았다. 특히 추정적 의사 를 객관적인 제3자의 입장에서 가정적으로 파악할 수밖에 없다는 사실도 받아들 여야 하겠지만, 추정의 자료에 말기환자의 의사와 관련성이 약한 자료들이 포함 되어 구체적인 추정과정에서 중시되면 환자의 자기결정권은 허무화될 수밖에 없다. 이와 관련하여 의료자원의 균형적 배분이라는 요소까지 고려한 원심 판단은 이 런 가능성을 현실적으로 보여준다. 이런 요소는 이 사건과 관련성이 없고 다른 차원에서 해결되어야 할 사항이다.이 논문은 2009년도 국민대학교 교내연구비를 지원받아 수행된 연구임
