The purpose of current study is to explore the change of North Korean female defectors beliefs and attitudes in dietary lifestyle and food culture by using focus group interview(FGI) method designs. To this end, in-depth group interview was conducted with four North Korean women. The results show that, first, the participants reported deculturation process, such as avoiding livestock slaughter that is rarely done in ordinary households in the South Korean dietary culture, and partly accepted new South Korean culture through neoculturation process, such as checking the nutrients contained in food and taking nutritional supplements. Second, the participants paid more attention to hygiene in the process of managing ingredients and preparing food, and also showed a change in the cleaning method of ingredients. Third, participants expressed satisfaction with the environment where they could buy any kinds of ingredients they wanted to eat anytime regardless of season. When it comes to cooking style, however, they still adhere to traditional home-cooking methods for themselves. Lastly, the participants were assimilated by experiencing new food cultures that they had not experienced in North Korean society, such as splitting the bill (Dutch pay) and eating alone culture. Limitations and implications of the study are also discussed with future research agenda.N

The purpose of this study was to explore job experiences of South Korean employees with North Korean Defectors based on sequential mixed method designs. First, we interviewed four South Koreans and analyzed qualitative data using case study research to understand work experiences of South Koreans who had North Korean defectors as co-workers. The qualitative study results showed six areas and 16 categories, and those six areas are showing superior power over North Korean colleagues, demonstrating social competence in relations with North Korean colleagues who have experienced heterogeneous cultures, taking mediator roles between coworkers, using workplace stress coping behavior and action strategies, having ambivalent feelings toward North Korean colleagues, and seeking self-realization through work with North Korean colleagues. Based on the qualitative findings, we conducted a quantitative study with 80 South Koreans who have worked with North Korean Defectors. We measured multicultural attitudes, job stress coping ability, belief in a just world, and meaning of work and we conducted a multiple regression analysis. The findings demonstrated both positive attitudes toward North Korean defectors and job stress coping skills as the common significant variables that explain the tendency to putt work meanings on acceptance and social relationship as well as the pursuit of self-actualization. Last, limitations and implications of the study are discussed with suggestion for the direction of future research.N

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between family strength and career decision-making difficulties and the mediating effect or career self-regulation. The results of the present study suggested the significance of family strength and career self-regulation in understanding career decision-making difficulties. With 172 Korean college students, there were both significant direct and indirect effects from family strength to career decision-making difficulties. Specifically, the mediation roles of career self-regulation was confirmed. Comparing the partial mediation model with full mediation model, the partial mediation model fits better with the data. These results have significant clinical implication that counseling practitioners need to address the possible influence of family strength on college students perceived difficulties in career decision-making process and to assist students develop appropriate level of competencies of regulating ones emotion, thoughts, and behavior related to career problems.N

The in-depth interviews were conducted for 5 months from September 2017 with 5 North Korean defectors who are currently employed in South Korea. We analyzed the data by using the qualitative case study method. As a result, we found 6 main categories, such as โ€˜practical information that helps adjustment to South Korean culture and workโ€™, โ€˜having supportive South Korean colleagues, family, and acquaintancesโ€™, โ€˜implement strategies to secure position in the workplace as a settlerโ€™, โ€˜acquiring of adaptive relationship skills in the mainstream societyโ€™, โ€˜oneโ€™s way of thinking and self-management as individualized selfโ€™, and โ€˜compensation and economic satisfaction from the decent workโ€™ with 18 subcategories. The purpose of this study is to understand the South Koreans interaction experience with North Korean defectors as being coworkers by using qualitative case study methods. Understandings about what the South Koreans perception on the North Korean coworkers and how those attitudes has been maintained and changed will be useful to provide tailored interventions for creating more inclusive work environment. Four South Korean employees in welfare agencies working with North Korean coworkers participated in the semi-structured in-depth interview. The interview took place from July, 2017 for 5 months. The finding suggested 7 categories were formed: near and yet so far, difference and gap of language norm between North and South Korea, rough life to start over with nothing, efforts to survive, less than expected work performance, relationship-oriented strength, and result of ideological education. Throughout the process of finding those categories, our study provided more in-depth and expanded understandings that South Koreans has had some negative perceptions and worries about working with North Korean coworkers but at the same time they also have learned positive strengths of their coworkers with open attitudes. Last, we also discussed several theoretical and practical implications to provide safe and inclusive work environments to both parts who works at welfare agencies.N
