This study examined the effects of student background characteristics and institutional features on time spent preparing for class and student-faculty interaction of university students. Independent variables include gender, grade, family income level, high school GPA, type of high school, and the sense of belonging to university at the student level and spending per student, the number of research paper per faculty, university location, and the average sense of belonging to university among students at the institution level. Samples include 7,182 students from 32 universities. Multilevel modeling was employed to investigate the relationships between dependent and independent variables at each level. At the student level, all independent variables except for type of high school were found to be positively associated with time spent preparing for class. At the institution level, spending per student and the average sense of belonging to university among students were positively related with time spent preparing for class. Regarding student-faculty interaction, all predictors except for whether to graduate from vocational high schools were found to be positively related with student-faculty interaction of university students.
