Operating Room where nursing students could learn aseptic techniques, cooperative team work, and effective management for emergent situation, and where they could observe vividly alive human anatomy and physiologic changes as well, has been an essential part of clinical experiences of nursing students.
This study is to assess the actual student experience at operation room to plan for better learning experience of students.
The specific objectives of this study are as follows:
1. To find out the range, kind and frequency of clinical experiences at the operation room.
2. To develop a model of clinical instructional plan at operating room.
3. To scrutinize nursing students clinical experience according the model.
Existing data were utilized for the analysis. The data source was the student reports on their experiences while in operation room. Necessary information for meeting the objectives was drawn from the data and recorded and processed by machine. Percentage was the main means of reducing the raw data.
The findings of this study were:
1. The most frequent number of clinical experience that each student had operating room nursing of general surgery(3.5/student/4wk.), and the least frequent number of clinical experience that each student experienced was operating room nursing of genitourinary tract surgery(0.8/student/4wk).
2. The highest percentage of nursing students experienced operation room nursing of obstetric & gynecologic surgery (29.6%), and the lowest percentage had operating room nursing of genitourinary tract surgery (7.0%).
3. The most frequent type of learning experiences that the student had at the operating room was observation (9.3/student/4wk), circulating experience, 4.0 times per student for 4 weeks. The lowest was scrub experience. Each student had on the average 1.7 times during for the four weeks of operating room clinical experiences.
4. The newly developed model for student learning experiences in operating room was designed to give students nursing experience from simple to complex and from observation to scrubbing to assist operation. Duration of the planned experiences required 3 days a week, 8 hours daily for 4 weeks clinical experience in operating room.
5. Only 25% of students had their nursing experiences in the sequence of experiences planned in the newly developed instructional model at operating room.restrictio
