Studies in Lucians Philosophic Satire

학위논문(박사) --서울대학교 대학원 :협동과정 서양고전학전공,2010.2.Lucian of Samosata was a sophist who wrote satirical texts for declamation in the second century A.D. He left as many as eighty pieces of work under his name, but somehow he failed to secure proper recognition from his contemporaries. Of the few fragmentary references to him the most notable is the article in the Byzantine Suda which regards Lucian as a despicable atheist and is largely responsible for the longsustained prejudice against him. At the end of the nineteenth century the German scholars were still attacking Lucian as a plagiarist and/or epigone of Menippus. Since the 1930s, however, British and American scholars have been engaged in assessing the nature of his work in the firm belief that Lucian has his own distinctive literary value. Chapter 1 is an outline of the reception history of Lucian's works. Here I tried to define the aim of the dissertation as a critical reading of Lucian's philosophic satires on the assumption that it owes by and large to his Syrian background and rhetoric education. Among the works intensively discussed here are the following philosophic satires: Nekyomanteia, Hermotimus, Symposium, Nigrinus, Demonax, Alexander and De Morte Peregrini. In Chapter 2 I discuss the originality of Lucian's satires and try to figure out the textual characteristic common to these seven works. I also raise the question: why and how Lucian creates a literary persona of his own. In Chapter 3 my discussion focuses on the three comic dialogues: Nekyomanteia, Hermotimus and Symposium. In these works Lucian pits the theme of the valuable layman's life against the falseness of 'pseudo-philosophers'. In Chapter 4 the lives of the three philosophers in Nigrinus, Demonax and Alexander are discussed. As each life is presented in its own peculiar way as the paragon of philosophy, I try to deduce whatever criteria of philosophic satire may have been entertained by Lucian. In Chapter 5 De Morte Peregrini, one of Lucian's most controversial satires, is discussed on the assumption that the author is not a mere satirist but a sincere critic who relentlessly makes a fool of the notorious would-be philosopher. My conclusion in Chapter 6 is that the value of Lucian's texts should not be judged merely by its creative aspects, because they prove the validity of the author's life-long effort to reconcile his Syrian background with the Greco-Roman world and thereby establish his own self-identity as a Roman citizen born in Syria but immersed in Greek culture.Docto

Bidirectional Associations between Male and Female Adolescents Mobile Phone Dependency and Self-Esteem

본 연구는 남?여 청소년의 휴대전화의존도와 자아존중감을 통합적으로 고려하여 살펴보고, 청소년의 성별에 따른 휴대전화의존도와 자아존중감 사이의 종단적 상호관계를 검증하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한국청소년정책연구원에서 2010년 중학교 1학년 학생들을 대상으로 2014년 고등학교 2학년까지 매년 추적조사를 실시한 한국아동?청소년패널 자료를 자기회귀교차지연 모델을 적용하여 분석하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과를 요약하고 논의하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 청소년이 지각한 부모의 부정적 양육방식을 통제한 후 세 시점에 걸친 남?여 청소년의 휴대전화의존도와 자아존중감의 자기회귀계수를 측정한 결과 이전 시점의 휴대전화의존도와 자아존중감은 각각 이후 시점의 휴대전화의존도와 자아존중감에 유의한 영향을 미쳤다. 둘째, 청소년이 지각한 부모의 부정적 양육방식을 통제한 후 세 시점에 걸친 남?여 청소년의 휴대전화의존도와 자아존중감의 교차회귀계수를 측정한 결과 이전 시점의 남?여 청소년의 자아존중감은 이후 시점의 휴대전화의존도에 유의한 영향을 미친 반면, 이전 시점의 남?여 청소년의 휴대전화의존도가 이후 시점의 자아존중감에는 유의한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 마지막으로 두 변인 간의 관계에 성별의 차이는 없었다. 이와 같은 연구결과에 기초하여 청소년의 자아존중감과 같은 개인의 긍정적인 심리적 특성이 이들의 휴대전화의존도의 보호요인이 됨을 알고, 이와 관련하여 연구의 의의와 한계 및 후속 연구를 위한 제언을 제시하였다. The purpose of this study was to examine the bidirectional relationship between mobile phone dependency (MPD) and self-esteem (SE) of South Korean male and female adolescents in the seventh, ninth, and eleventh grades, while accounting for gender differences. The study used panel data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Study (KCYPS), and three waves of data from 2,327 adolescents were analyzed by means of autoregressive cross-lagged modeling. The results can be summarized as follows. First, MPD and SE were consistently stable for adolescents in the seventh, ninth, and eleventh grades. Second, there was a significant influence of adolescents high level of SE on the subsequent low level of MPD. However, there was no significant influence of their high level of MPD on the subsequent low level of SE across time. According to the multi-group analysis, no gender differences were found in the relationship between the two constructs during the study period. These findings suggest that special efforts of enhancing adolescents levels of self-esteem are definitely necessary in order to prevent their high levels of mobile phone dependency. Based on the results, implications were also discussed.N

Ultrastructural Observation on the Sparganum Tegument

The tegument of Sparganum mansoni was observed through scanning and transmission electron microscope on the scolex , neck and tail parts. The tegument had the general surface structure of cestodes in all 3 parts observed. However, the microtriches were observed in 3 types; pyramidal (Type 1), filariform (Type 2) and bulb·rooted (Type 3). 398 The pyramidal microtrix had a short proximal part and a long and electron dense distal part. Both parts revealed rhomboidal or triangular cut surface at cross section. Microtriches of this type were abundantly distributed on the tegument of scolex portion. It was supposed to be related with the role of scolex , such as movement, penetration into host tissue and survival or positioning in the host. The filariform type microtrix was short, slender and less electron dense. It was the dominant type among those distributed on the tegument of neck to tail portions. This type was thought to be important in absorptive function of the worm. The bulb·rooted microtrix had distinctively wide and round proximal part, which was round in cross sections. It randomly intervened among filariform microtriches from neck to tai l. The microtrix of this type was also considered to be the locus of membrane phenomena of this larval cestode The microtriches decreased in length and density gradually from scolex to tai l. Also the packets of secretory granule and pit organelle were observed in tegumental and subtegumental layer

The Effect of Attachment Security on Preschoolers Perspective Taking: Executive Function as a Mediator

Objective: This study aimed to examine the prospective links among perspective taking, attachment security, and executive function and the mediating role of executive function on the relationship between attachment security and perspective taking. Methods: The participants included 147 preschoolers living in Gyeonggi. The data-analysis methods included descriptive statistics, independent t -tests, one-way ANOVAs, Pearsons correlation analysis, hierarchical multiple regression analysis, and the Sobel test. Results: First, preschoolers perspective taking was significantly related to attachment security, and executive function. Furthermore, there was a significant association between attachment security and executive function. As expected, the correlations were positive in all cases. Second, the effects of attachment security on intention and emotion perspective takings were fully mediated by executive function when holding childrens age and vocabulary constant. However, executive function did not predict thought perspective taking, whereas attachment security did. Conclusion: Given that parent?child attachment security might play an important role in child cognitive and socio-cognitive development, parents endeavors to enhance the quality of the attachment relationship could be a fruitful path for preschoolers developing executive capacities and perspective taking.Y
