Academic achievement of Korean adolescents is recognized as one of the highest in the world. However, Korean teenagers spend far more time studying compared to those from other countries who earn similar scores. In order to probe into the learning process of Korean high school students, this paper analyses data obtained from the Korean Youth Panel Survey while using the hierarchical regression analysis and path analysis. The main results are as follow. (1) Students whose parents are of a higher socioeconomic status tend to have higher educational aspiration similar to their parents. (2) Educational aspiration of the students is evaluated as a decisive factor which influences their educational participation and academic achievement. (3) Among the three types of educational participation methods (public, private, and self-directed), public education appears to be more effective for improving College Scholastic Ability Test scores, whereas the efficacy of private education is even lower than that of self-directed learning contrary to the common expectation in Korean society
