Merleau-Ponty shows that only by the depth as inseparable moment of perception, three dimensions of space can open and unfold before our eyes, so that the sens of a materially presented thing is provided for the first time. According to Husserl s analysis of kinesthetic sensation, the spatiality of perception has its ground on the transition of thing s appearances corresponding to the body s movement. The purpose of this study is to enhance their ability to form interpersonal connections with their peers and to live with mature civic awareness by fostering citizenship based on compassion. Furthermore, with this process, it eventually is expected that teachers or moral educators would utilize this unique approach to citizenship education. Compassion is a distinctive moral emotion which is composed of two factors: recognizing others suffering and offering help to alleviate it. This can be found on both theoretical and empirical levels, and it means compassion can be an important virtue for individuals and communities. On an individual level, compassion is directly related to moral reasoning and behavioron a community level, it affects the improvement and well-being of the community, forms a compassionate society, and raises citizens' cooperative consciousness. Thus, it is reasonable to conclude that compassion is required for being a moral citizen. The compassion model, an instructional model for teaching compassion in citizenship education, was made according to the "appraisal model of compassion" theory. It was also developed by considering and reflecting on the South Korean moral educational context and teachers' needs. After that, experimental research with this compassion model was conducted on 6th grade students in an elementary school. The research results can be explained in two categories: quantitative and qualitative. On a quantitative level, the experimental group who took the compassion model showed a significant difference compared to the two comparison groups in pre-post test score differences. The assessment tool used in the both tests was created according to the theory of Rest and Volker, and was designed to measure civic awareness based on compassion. On a qualitative level, interviews were conducted with volunteers in the experimental group. Students who agreed to be interviewed expressed a mature civic awareness and high understanding of the concept and power of compassion. Thus, it is appropriate to conclude that the compassion model is effective for enhancing civic awareness and helps students to have the ability to live together in harmony. In the moral educational context, the result has four implications. First, it stresses the importance of morality based on the idea of "person to person relationship." Second, it focuses on the broader and deeper understanding of the concept of compassion. Third, it emphasizes the possibility of an approach which values negative factors such as suffering and harm. Fourth, it observes the positive relationship between compassion and guilt/shame.
