Therefore, The purpose of this study was to make an in-depth analysis of the types of eating disorder, the start of eating disorder, and continuance process of eating disorder in male weight class athletes. For this, this study selected 7 athletes that have eating disorder experience in boxing, teakwondo, wrestling, and judo as research participants. Also, data was collected through in-depth interviews from November 2011 to February 2012. Through a text analysis, this study found the following results.
First, eating disorder occurred in the forms of frequent diet limit, binge, vomit, and dose of diuretic of research participants. This is because the research participants went through a short-term weight loss during the season period to participate in the tournament, instead of managing weight over the long term through diet and exercise, and were stressed and burdened by it. Moreover, it was found that they did not identically experience eating disorder, but each experienced it differently.
Second, this study has found that the eating disorder of research participants initiated with the choice of an easier way of losing weight, pressure to acquire the qualification to participate in tournaments, and influence of colleagues. Furthermore, it was found that the eating disorder became continued due to the familiarity of the weight class determination system and an easy way of weight loss from the middle and high school period to the university period. For the type that eating disorder continues, there were differences depending on the period (in-season, off-season) and the importance of the tournament. During the in-season period and for tournaments that were highly important, eating disorders were noticeable.
Lastly, research participants understood the experience as extreme stress, an unfair sense of competition, and the creation of a sympathetic culture regarding the eating disorder. They were stressed by the imbalance between the individual capability for weight control and environmental demand for weight class determination. Moreover, they felt they were not playing fair concerning the fact they were losing weight more easily than other athletes. However, this negative perception of the eating disorder experience was justified as the research participant sympathizes with those who have experienced eating disorder around him or her.β
